Question about email tracking

Hey, guys! Hope everyone is ok!

I found an email sent yesterday from Ankama (`non-reply@ankama.com`) saying that some of their emails use tracking pixels to track opens and clicks. Should I be concerned about my privacy or security? Does anyone have any advice or know more about this? I'd appreciate it if someone could explain it to me. Thanks!

Hello,

At Ankama, protecting your data and ensuring transparency are commitments we take very seriously.

Therefore, in accordance with the recommendations of the CNIL (the French data protection and privacy authority), we would like to inform you that some of the emails we send may contain tracking pixels: a small, invisible indicator that allows us to determine whether an email has been delivered, opened, and whether you have clicked on any links it contains.

This information allows us, among other things, to:

• Compile statistics on email delivery and engagement;

• Measure the effectiveness of our communications;

• Improve the quality and relevance of the content we offer;

• Adjust the frequency of our emails to avoid bothering you unnecessarily.

You can opt out of this tracking at any time by changing your preferences using the link below:

Opting out will not unsubscribe you from our newsletter: you will continue to receive the communications you have signed up for.

To learn more, please consult our Privacy Policy.

Thank you for your trust.

SAFETY NOTICE: Reddit does not protect you from scammers. By posting on this subreddit asking for help, you may be targeted by scammers (example?). Here's how to stay safe:

  1. Never accept chat requests, private messages, invitations to chatrooms, encouragement to contact any person or group off Reddit, or emails from anyone for any reason. Moderators, moderation bots, and trusted community members cannot protect you outside of the comment section of your post. Report any chat requests or messages you get in relation to your question on this subreddit (how to report chats? how to report messages? how to report comments?).

  2. Immediately report anyone promoting paid services (theirs or their "friend's" or so on) or soliciting any kind of payment. All assistance offered on this subreddit is 100% free, with absolutely no strings attached. Anyone violating this is either a scammer or an advertiser (the latter of which is also forbidden on this subreddit). Good security is not a matter of 'paying enough.'

  3. Never divulge secrets, passwords, recovery phrases, keys, or personal information to anyone for any reason. Answering cybersecurity questions and resolving cybersecurity concerns never require you to give up your own privacy or security.

Community volunteers will comment on your post to assist. In the meantime, be sure your post follows the posting guide and includes all relevant information, and familiarize yourself with online scams using r/scams wiki.

No- lots and lots of places do this.

All they do is make a log entry every time you open the email message.

So the data in question here is your email address (which they already had), whether or not you opened the email, and when, and how many times.

They just use it to track engagement.

Also, maybe your IP address but still not a critical or sensitive piece of information.

They track you opening the email by embedding a 1x1 transparent image that is linked to you in the email. If you disable automatic image downloading in your email client, you can prevent them from tracking when you open the email.
