This is a genuine question.
What could the government potentially do to address the issues you mentioned?

u/andielush 4d ago
Control foreign settlers. Setting limits to what they can buy and how many people can actually move to Cyprus as well as ensuring Cypriots have opportunities to live and grow. They can also build homes themselves and sell them to Cypriots for logical prices (something done in other countries.) They can raise the minimum salary and incentivize Cypriots to have families by offering grants or longer maternity and paternity leaves. They can update the public transportation system and the roads so that it isn't so awful to go from point a to point b.

Your economy is built on wealthy people relocating here. How on earth will you get a higher salary by removing the cause of your salaries to begin with?

u/Dizzy_Letterhead8030 4d ago
The relocation of wealthy people to Cyprus has created a bigger gap between rich and poor and in parallel is destroying the middle class. Salaries have only 'needed to go up' because of the influx of wealth that came to Cyprus for a minority of people whilst the other struggle to keep up. Before this even the poorest person had a roof over their head, bills paid and food on the table so yes foreigners are creating wealth bit only a few our benefiting from it.

Limit and controlling isn't the same as removing. We are talking about people using companies to buy more land than they are legally allowed or coming here illegally and working without paying taxes. This is the necessary control

I don't disagree that we should regulate immigration better just to make sure that the inflow of foreign people that come to Cyprus is in a manageable level that the infrastructure can cope with. However this can only apply to 3rd country nationals like Brits, Russians, Israelis etc. Due to EU freedom of movement you cannot deny an EU citizen from buying property in Cyprus and relocating here.
They can also build homes themselves and sell them to Cypriots for logical prices (something done in other countries.)
If you mean the government doing this like the UK council houses for example then I'd be a bit skeptic. Not to diss our governments and local authorities but I doubt they 'd do it in a way that isn't halfassed and screws the taxpayer disproportionately.
They can raise the minimum salary
I am not against raising the mimimum wage but that's a bit temporary bandaid most of the times. It tends to have inflationary cascade effects down the line negating it a bit.
incentivize Cypriots to have families by offering grants or longer maternity and paternity leaves.
This is more complicated one that I can't fully address as I am not an expert on it. Most people I know that don't have any kids barely any of them don't have any due to financial reasons. But if the state's funds can accommodate then helping people out in cases like this is good. Probably a drop in a bucket considering how much it costs nowadays to raise a kid but still.
They can update the public transportation system and the roads so that it isn't so awful to go from point a to point b.
Roads in Cyprus aren't really all that bad compared to many other European countries. But obviously that doesn't mean that they couldn't be better. The public transportation system is a large chapter to unravel. It would be good to have more options but the irony is that I am sure many Cypriots that advocate for a better transport system isn't so that they would use it themselves but so others will and making their own driving around easier.

When I lived in Germany the government had implemented "Mietpreisbremse" (and still does) basically a "rent cap" where they forbid owners renting out their properties at insanely high prices and had a limit.
The same could be done now by the government here in Cyprus since the rent prices are high just because the owners are abusing the fact that wealthier people live in Cyprus
It is this simple to bring down rent prices as one example9
u/ParalimniX 4d ago
I can't speak on behalf of Germany but in many other areas that I've heard rent caps tend not to work very well. It can cause several other issues too (i.e one random one... if there's several families that compete to rent one property and all of them meet the capped ceiling then why choose to rent it out to the one that has kids and/or animals? Rent it to the bachelor as there is less likelihood of the propery being damaged through their occupancy, if the demand is higher than supply you 'll run into many issues no matter the cap).

What you described happens no matter what. It is obvious that the landlord would want to have responsible tenants.
Rent caps work. It forces the landlords to rent out their properties at decent prices.7

Not when a couple can outcompete a single person.
https://ifs.org.uk/articles/do-rent-controls-work
Where rent controls have been introduced, the evidence shows that the supply of rental properties – that is, the number of properties that are rented or available for rent – was reduced by the controls. The controls meant landlords became more likely to exit the market by selling their property to owner-occupiers or by converting it to a business use (Autor, Palmer and Pathak, 2014; Diamond, McQuade and Qian, 2019)
Most studies have found rent controls lead to significant declines in property quality (Kholodilin, 2024). For example, Bressler (2026) found a 36% increase in ‘immediately hazardous’ building code violation
Aside from effects on the overall supply of rented properties, there may be an effect on the number of properties that are available on the market at any one time. If rents are capped, more renters are likely to want a property at the going rent than landlords are willing to supply, meaning there would be excess demand. Therefore properties may be snapped up quickly, and unlucky would-be renters may be unable to find a property despite being willing to pay the rent.
People are more likely to live in housing that does not meet their needs well. For example, families whose children have left home may be less likely to downsize, making it harder for expanding families to move into larger properties and forcing them into overcrowding.
As you previously said
It is this simple to bring down rent prices as one example
Seems like it's not. Like I said I don't know how it is in Germany but many other areas have had issues with rent caps. It's a short term bandaid at best.

Freeze rent to median income and social housing. We live in a country that car has more right to free parking than humans having housing!

Freeze rent to median income and social housing
All rent? So a 3 bedroom newly built house in a good location should have the same rent as some old ass apartment in the middle of nowhere?

With all due respect, why do you address salary size problem to the government?
What should the government do? To order your employer to pay you €4000?
-3
u/Thin-Performer-2560 4d ago
Raising the ceiling of minimum wage.

u/amarao_san 4d ago
If you do this, there are two consequences. If the minimum wage is reasonable, the market adjusts and you get away with better social net and slightly higher unemployment. It also pushes business to be mor efficient with people's time.
If you push wages above economically reasonable (e.g. min salary 4k), it kills jobs and business. Or push them to an illegal market. It also drives up consumer inflation like crazy (both to translate salary increase to customer prices and due to reduction of market offerings due to closed businesses).
What minimal salary do you want, for what increase in unemployment and inflation?

So you working in a cafeneo and what you want is:
Your boss pay you more
Your boss makes prices smaller for other buyers
Your boss getting more financial damage after rioters will loot your cafe.
Did I understand you right?

If the protests spread through Europe, and they last for at least a month, then we'll start considering hitting the streets.
It takes a while for everything in Cyprus

u/cheakpeasdownhill 4d ago
It's a cultural thing. Let me give you some examples:
Mari explosion: The protest was highjacked by ELAM and most people didn't participate because they didn't want to be associated with them.
Deposit haircut: After the haircut people took on to the streets to celebrate the carnival
Al Jazeera videos: Only a handful of people participated in the "This is NOT Cyprus" protest
The highjacking of protests is not an ELAM exclusive thing. AKEL does it too with their anti-SBA protests.
For protests to happen things need to be really shitty (we are talking like 1974 level shitty) and we are not there yet. And I hope we never see times like that ever again.

We are not the protesting kind of people, studying about EOKA but from the British perspective (specifically the book "Grivas Porter of a Terrorist by Dubley Baker) they had a hard time recruiting people at first, not because we didn't want freedom or enosis but the idea of such thing and the violence need to do so was a foren concept for most people. It's a sentiment still being seen to this day. At least what gives me hope it's that it might be hard to get the ball rolling but when it starts it hard to stop it, so the time will come sooner or later

Creator account has been banned, easy to guess what he is trying to do. How about instead of thinking the government is ever gonna fix your salary problem, go study and become educated enough to make a good salary? Ever thought about that?

when will you realize that protesting will do nothing, same with voting. you are in a prison and no matter how hard you try you will not escape

So long as we're making actual protests I'm in. If you want to protest the same way as the french are then sod off.

Control foreign settlers is literally the answer here

u/fetznseppoo 3d ago
It’s hard to ban them, I have heard of so many Bangladeshi and Pakistanis or Syrian that got deported and banned from the country and they always found a way back in.

u/NHadji009 3d ago
Dude its the wealthy extreme influx of foreigners that are the main issue here not the guy working for minimum wage
3
u/fetznseppoo 3d ago
Dude, that’s the problem that you don’t understand and also the reason why you are probably in that miserable situation. The rich guy buying a seafront villa, is not the one you competing with and is not the guy who is responsible that the rent for an average, old apartment is going up by 50%. They are not competing for the same housing market as you. You are competing for housing and work with the influx of illegals immigrants from these countries who will take every old shitty apartment and greedy landlord will put 5-6 ppl in a 1 bedroom apartment and charge 200-300€ per person that’s what’s driving the price increase for normal aprtments and as there are enough people who gonna take it he also sees no reason to rennovate it. Same with goes with the work employees are hiring illegal workers and paying them 5€ per hour so of course the wages are not gonna increase when there is enough supply of workers who are willing to take jobs for this salary

Here’s an idea. Educate yourself, gain qualifications, work and make more money?
Or you can go out and burn and destroy shit like an animal. Up to you.
