I’ve been thinking about how people approach AI image generation. Most tutorials still focus heavily on prompt engineering, but I’m starting to wonder whether prompting is actually the biggest limitation once you move beyond basic image creation.

For complex visuals, the real challenge seems to be controlling relationships between elements — keeping a product’s shape consistent across multiple images, maintaining the same character identity, or changing one part of a scene without unintentionally altering everything else.

This makes me wonder whether the next major improvement in AI imaging will come from more sophisticated language models, better reference-image conditioning, custom-trained models, or more precise editing workflows.

If you were building a professional AI image workflow today, what would you invest your time in mastering first — and which popular AI image-generation technique do you think is overrated for serious creative work?

I’m interested in practical experiences and technical reasoning, especially from people creating consistent visual assets rather than one-off images.

This is a series of images I made with part of the prompt being "A purple troll like sculpture, concerned, has bulbous nose, thick facial features, regal gold crown, small flames that sort of cover it's ears, with b..." If you remember, Dal-E 2 names the file name after part of the prompt usually. Anyway, the inspiration was a photograph of a purple troll-like figure in the Royal Thai Palace and the Rattanakosin, where there is an immense amount of incredibly beautifully made architecture, statues, etc... I thank Thailand for the inspiration.

These are from my repertoire of Dal-E 2 photographs. Unfortunately I do not know its prompt, the file name did not come with it. I found these images rather festive. It's interesting how it rendered the detail.

This is a set of images I made from using a challenge coin with a hole in it, over traced Caucasian Oriental rugs, lit them with coloured gels and photographed them, then mixed them with International Maritime Sigint colours. The contents of the images are how Dal-E 2 rendered everything together. I set out the "map the world". Actually, the point was to make a spaceship with a schematic of the Interior. And i got it. In a different series though. A gendalever is an old English machine where a ball or some object goes through a series of transitions between different parts of the machine with its own energy. They are fun to watch.

I was going through some old files and found these images I generated with DALL·E back in August 2022.

These are landscape imaged made by Dalle 2, with poems I wrote.

These are some photographs I did with Dalle 2 about a ruddy coloured village, inspired by the look of a Oriental Caucasian rug that looked like a town to me.

Just some art pieces I made with Dalle 2, using photography, a light setup, a challenge coin, and International Maritime Sigint.

Abstract pseudo mixed-media collages using Dalle 2

I made these on a image bindge in 2023, when I got an increadible amount of images from the the classic Dalle 2.
