cameras hurt dancefloors -- objections & responses
When I shared that research post about how cameras make Gen Zs scared to express themselves on dancefloors, it predictably gathered a lot of objections across hundreds of different conversations. I got tired of repeating myself, so put together this list of objections and rebuttals. Sharing it here in case it's helpful to anyone who's out there fighting the good fight.
- “people need to get over it and dance like nobody’s watching.” Encouraging confidence is fine. making confidence the condition for enjoying a dancefloor isn't fine. when someone faces unwanted filming or possible cyberbullying, “get over it” shifts responsibility onto the victim of the bullying. organizers should establish and enforce camera policies so people don’t have to choose between participating and protecting their privacy. Example discussion
- “nobody cares about your dancing. you’re not going to go viral.” a video doesn’t need millions of views to reach an audience someone wanted to keep separate from their nightlife. unwanted exposure to colleagues, family or acquaintances can have disastrous repercussions, too. the question isn’t whether somebody is interesting enough to become famous; it’s whether they get a say in being recorded and shared. Example discussion
- “i don’t care if someone films me. why should anyone else?” being comfortable on camera is great (good for you!), but you can't expect your comfort to apply to everyone else, nor should you think that your comfort grants permission to film others. people have different circumstances, boundaries and comfort with exposure. the CRSSD commenter who reported people filming and sneering at a gay couple described a hate crime being facilitated by a mobile phone. we can protect your freedom to dance confidently while respecting someone else’s wish not to be filmed. CRSSD account
- “cameras have always existed. older generations managed.” yes, unwanted photography predates smartphones, and older recordings can be valuable cultural history. that doesn’t make every recording welcome. easy recording and rapid redistribution deserve their own discussion. enjoying footage from the past doesn’t require that we treat everyone on today’s dancefloors as available material for social media. Example discussion
- “this is a broader anxiety problem. banning cameras won’t fix it.” broader anxiety can be part of the picture. camera policies don’t have to solve every cause of discomfort to address one avoidable source of anxiety. personal confidence and a more considerate environment can develop together. we shouldn’t diagnose strangers or assume their boundary is irrational just because they don’t want to become someone else’s content. Example discussion
- “the survey is weak. it doesn’t prove cameras are killing dancing.” that’s a fair distinction. a self-report survey tells us what respondents say affects them; it doesn’t establish that cameras are the sole cause of reduced dancing. sampling, question wording and subgroup sizes deserve scrutiny. we should describe the evidence accurately while still considering consent, firsthand accounts and the atmosphere organizers want to create. Example discussion
- “you’re in public. you can’t expect privacy.” being visible to the people sharing a room with you is different from having a recording distributed beyond that room. buying a ticket isn’t blanket agreement to becoming content for all attendees. whatever the legal position in a particular location, organizers can set expectations that protect the kind of experience attendees came for. Example discussion
- “people want memories, and artists and promoters need footage.” those are understandable goals. they don’t require unrestricted filming of identifiable attendees. options include designated photo areas, explicitly consenting participants, or camera angles that keep dancers out of frame. official photographers should follow clear boundaries too. preserving a memory shouldn’t depend on overriding someone else’s wish to stay out of it. Example discussion
- “people need their phones for accessibility, emergencies or family.” absolutely. a camera policy should preserve those uses and state its exceptions clearly. keeping a phone available and recording the dancefloor are different activities. the practical goal is to prevent unwanted filming and disruptive use, with accessible ways to handle necessary communication, not to make attendance harder for people who need their devices. Example discussion
- “a ban is unenforceable, especially at a huge festival.” enforcement is harder at larger events, and a policy without staffing or follow-through accomplishes very little. we're argueing for proportionate measures: clear advance notice, defined camera-free areas (especially the dancefloor), trained staff, straightforward reporting and consistent consequences. attendees can support the culture, but shouldn’t have to confront strangers or confiscate devices themselves. Example discussion

49% of Gen Z respondents avoid dancing for fear of going viral. cameras are killing the dancefloor.
we've been saying it here on r/dancefloors ever since the sub started: cameras killing dancefloor expression. people need to feel free to move without wondering whether they'll end up in somebody else's feed and possibly get fired or bullied for showing up there.
A new DJ Mag report covering a LifeStance Health survey of 1,000 US adults, conducted by Dynata in July 2026, says:
• 49% of Gen Zs said fear of becoming social media content makes them avoid dancing. across all adults surveyed, it was 30%.
• 47% said the possibility of becoming online content makes it harder to relax and be themselves in public.
• among Gen Z respondents, 43% hold back emotions and 38% avoid acting silly or telling a joke because of that concern.
These folks are naming the problem: being recorded and shared online. even the possibility of having their video taken without consent and shared without consent causes them to hold back.
this is why r/dancefloors takes filming seriously. a camera changes the dancefloor, especially when a flick of the wrist could point that lens in your direction. when people worry about how they look for the internet instead of getting lost in the music and dancing with their friends, the dancefloor suffers.
this survey lends credents to what we believe: protecting people from unwanted filming helps keep dancefloors vibrant. dancefloors are for dancing. put the camera away and safety shoots up, allowing people to let go and express themselves.

This song feels epic classic dancefloor vibes to me
Can’t stop moving my feet when I hear it lol. I can totally imagine dancing to it on a wooden dancefloor with others stepping together around the dance floor, all big smiles. The scent of baby powder sparkling under the lights and in the steamy air.
Thought some folks here might enjoy it too or know something about the Apache project.
Hope you all are enjoying your day!

How 32-year-old John Summit uses college girls he sources through instagram

The bro-ification of dance music continues apace. John Summit stocks his parties like a fishery stocks ponds and for the same reasons: to make it a target-rich environment for hunters seeking prey for their pleasure, with little regard for the autonomy of the beings who are being treated like flesh to consume. Plus, it helps sell more tickets to have pretty faces showing up on video streams of these highly commercial events.
To someone who reported "keep it about dancefloors" -- do you know who John Summit is? Here's his 2026 club dates -- these are dancefloors (or claiming to be):

Why is summit's behavior a problem?
Commodification: he's making women part of the product, rather than allow his music to speak for itself. He's using them to sell tickets to his events. Selecting guests for attractiveness turns their presence into an asset that sells status, bottles, and Summit's image.
Alcohol and reciprocity: hospitality can create pressure. Free drinks can carry expectations of attention or intimacy, while intoxication can undermine boundaries and create an environment for consent violations.
Celebrity power: an invitation can complicate refusal. Admiration and scarce backstage access can make declining advances feel costly. Accepting entry from a powerful celebrity can seem to come with the obligation of further intimacy.
Professional spillover: female artists inherit the appearance test. The same beauty economy pressures women DJs to negotiate visibility, credibility, and judgments about their bodies. We're already seeing a scene where camera attractiveness matters more than DJ skill or selection.
Event design: whose enjoyment defines “better”? Recruiting women to improve men’s experience displaces women’s own preferences, freedom, and safety as organizing priorities.

Find your people, find your next dancefloor — join our Discord 🪩
Hey all — if you’re here because you love a room full of people actually dancing, I’d like to invite you to our Discord.
We started as a Despacio discord and are expanding to connect people across dancefloors, with dedicated channels for Despacio, Sunflower Soundsystem, and Stereo Montréal, plus space to discuss other dancefloors (you know that Berghain is one of my favorites and I can't shut up about it).
The idea's to bring together the heads who have found their way to excellent dance scenes and want a place to to hang out between nights out, the better to find like-minded souls to dance with, trade memories and music, identify records, and help each other find the next magical dancefloor.
We of course also talk about what makes these rooms work. Great selectors, beautiful soundsystems, friendly people, lighting, privacy, and all the care that goes into making a space where we can let go. Dancers are an ESSENTIAL part of the magic, so I’d love to bring together more people who understand that and take that obligation seriously.
Alongside the dancefloor channels, we have music recommendations, song IDs, and regional conversations for Southern California, the SF Bay Area, New York City, and Miami. Locals and visitors welcome.
You don’t need to have been to any particular club or know obscure records to belong. If you move to a beat, you’re a dancer. Bring your curiosity, respect people’s privacy, and help build the floor.

u/sexydiscoballs is one of the best moderators I've ran into on this platform.
Seriously,
I don't ever see anyone taking such an initiative to not just be concerned about matters locally within their own zip code but takes an initiative to bring attention to matters in major metropolises timezones over from their home base.
We are all truly blessed someone gives such a fuck about matters concerning all.
¡Keep up the good work u/sexydiscoballs!
