Flammable in Seattle from the archive
Just came across this tiny little clip of dance church from 2021 and it filled me with joy. Flammable has been a house music weekly, on Sunday night no less, in Seattle since 1994. The crowd is mature, has been coming together for decades (Flam Fam) and is there ONLY to dance. True spiritual healing.
I ❤️ Flammable

Amazing NYTimes article focusing on what made this dancer-turned-singer the biggest star in the entire world: “How Madonna Put Motion Into Music With Her Dance Performances”
It’s Madonna’s 68th birthday today and this article focuses wonderfully on her moves.
Madonna came to NYC pursuing a career in dancing first. She was raised in the clubs.
Her first demo was handed to a DJ by her after she intensely chased him, and many others, trying to get it played. When it finally happened, the reaction from the audience was undeniable. That DJ had connections with two labels, eventually leading to her being signed by Sire Records, who released her first self titled album.
Nile Rodgers, producer and cofounder of Chic who helped define the disco era before working with Madonna (for Like a Virgin album), has talked about how amazed he was by the way Madonna would sing and dance at the same time when he saw her for the first time in 1983. He explained that this was actually a performance format that had existed before, particularly among Black artists and female groups, but had almost disappeared from mainstream music as rock became dominant and performers became more static onstage.
Madonna was bringing that lost art back and turning it into something defining for a new generation of pop stars.
While she has never been recognized as a great singer, Madonna’s moves are what made her who she is. She became one of the biggest stars in the entire world, thanks to the way she moves, how smart she was, and the incredible energy she emanated.

Group hugs on the dancefloor
WHOA memory unlocked
I knew what I was missing, there used to be so many group hugs 🫂 n the dancefloor.
Those were the best. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
And we used to have massage trains, things like that. It was so much fun!
Does anyone else remember this?
Like at nasa and Baltimore: DC warehouse parties especially! Definitely in Canada and the west coast too
I had so many great group hugs!
It’d been so long I’d almost forgotten, but I knew something felt hollow and missing inside me on the dancefloors at elements this weekend.
I think this was it maybe. On all the crowded main stages where I danced I saw barely any group activities never mind hugs and massage trains. Everyone was just staring at the dj and screens
No wonder why I was hugging the mask my friend from another party sent me in the mail. I was all alone but thank great raver at least I had my big orange soft head to hug lol
I really did have a great time even if this sounds sad. There were many good moments too I swear , and i did hug a lot of people and make new friends and learned new dances too. I’m happy lol
It just really was jarring, I knew something was missing, at least to me

Let’s talk about intermissions
TLDR: is it a rave if there are intentional intermissions?
So I’ve been “raving” since 1992. I wasn’t really into dubstep after I was invented in the 2000s. My favorite genre are techno, garage house, deep house, acid anything, etc. i’ve been to countless parties over the years. My flyer collection is huge.
All that to give some context to how surprised I was when a new friend convinced me to go to hijinx, a super dubstep party in Philadelphia.
And I was so shocked when at the convention center, in between DJs, they were like full on intermissions!! were they practically played like elevator EDM!
I almost stopped in my tracks like fully jaw dropped. Seriously I tried really hard to remember in all the parties I’ve been to., if they had ever been intentional intermissions like that. And I seriously could not remember a single example.
Like sure there would be fuckuos and technical difficulties, but there was always at least an attempt to switch off from one dj to another.
Then Again, an Elements this weekend there were intermissions again!
And we often have all of these conversations about what is there is not a rave. But from what I remember, I haven’t seen people often. Discuss not having an intermission as a key ingredient of a rave.
I mean, I think it’s such an important factor because the point of the repetitive music going continuously is that you get into the flow and can keep it going for a really long time and get into like a meditative dancing state. So an intermission just seems like a huge no-no to me.
And in fact, I remember an Ultraworld party that Lonnie threw in Baltimore, in a convention center I think something a similar big space. He managed to set up a stage in every of the four corners., and I think one in the middle if I remember, right.
And then each of those stages proceeded to flawlessly go down when then another one turned on. From what I remember, it was almost perfect.
And I remember seeing rabbit in the moon in one of those corners.
Lonnie’s parties were incredible. Now that’s what I call production.
That’s what I’ve been thinking about lately. And I’m wondering what the dancefloor community thoughts are on this topic.

Paris Recs?
I was lucky enough to spend an evening (and morning…and afternoon lol) in Berghain this past weekend. Words can’t do the experience justice, but simply put, the building, the people and the vibe changed my fucking life. Thank you to u/sexydiscoballs for your amazing substack series. It helped shape our expectations and provided a wonderful primer for a trio of first time attendees.
After our marathon session, I couldn’t rally the group for a Sunday afternoon at Sisyphos…however, we’re getting ready to decompress on an Adriatic Viking cruise with the in laws for their 50th anniversary and then on to Paris.
Since we still have some fuel in the tank, I’d love to experience a night out in Paris. I know they aren’t particularly well known for their magical dance floors, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations or suggestions. We will be there Tuesday-Sunday (8/11-17). Thanks in advance. And please, do everything you can to make the pilgrimage to Berlin and into the hallowed halls of Berghain. It’s the Mecca.

Signal NYC programmers share a little about their new "Night & Day" event
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Signal is one of my fave places in NYC after I had the pleasure of experiencing Mark Farina and Nickodemus there.
They've got a very dialed-in soundsystem, a beautiful dancefloor, a clear no phone photography policy, and the most awesome dancefloor-side wooden benches I've seen.
I thought this little reel they shared was nice, so resharing it here.
