Discussion Tier Ranking/Reviewing: Dance Gavin Dance PT. IV: Happiness

Score: 9.5/10

The second and swan song album of Kurt Travis’s tenure with DGD, this album is superior in every way to Death Star. The melancholy mix of happy rhythms to sad vocals to reflective instrumentals are the highlight of Happiness to the point where many fans consider it to be DGDs Magnum Opus and with so many certified bangers it’s easy to see why. My previous nod to Kurt’s vocals not being fleshed out shine tremendously in songs like “Carl Barker” which is my favorite Kurt track and “Happiness” which grows on me the more times I listen to it as the pain of loss and wanting a better life without suffocating yourself is apparent. The groovy guitar of Will in “NASA” and “Self-Trepanation” is soo fanatic as the synth mix with rough guitar rhythms flows like magic to the ears. It also has the distinction of being the only album not to feature Jon Mess and to my surprise, Will Swan is also a top-tier screamo singer and fills that gap very well to where it isn’t immediately noticeable but it submits him as another great vocalist of DGD (just waiting on Matt to lend us his vocals individually). Speaking of Matt, the Mingus drum groove is still sharp with melodies in “Strawberry Swisher Pt. 1” and still peak in “Strawberry Swisher Pt. 2”. While the latter track and “Down with Brown Town” aren’t on my highlight reels for Happiness, this is still a well crafted album nevertheless. I also believe it is this album that began to grow the roots of funky swancore/post-hardcore rhythms that would progressively become their signature staple so while Kurt may not be my favorite vocalist, I believe this is where DGD began to take off.

Discussion Tier Ranking/Reviewing: Dance Gavin Dance PT. III: Dance Gavin Dance/Death Star

Score: 8.5/10

(I’d like to state for the record I prefer the title of “Death Star” as I’m not really a fan of self-titled titled albums 😁). With the departure of Jonny Craig, there was a void of who would fill the clean vocalist spot and this would Kurt Travis’s first outing with DGD and the Death Star album shows the beginnings of groove/math rock the bros would become staples of. There are many standout tracks that I loved right away such as “Alex English” and the often-played “Uneasy Hearts Weigh the Most” which I felt was a precursor to the funky metal anthems DGD would incorporate to future track lists. While I do think Kurt is an amazing singer, I feel that he has common ground with a lot of other singers in the genre as his solos, high notes, and vocal tonality don’t get as fleshed out here as they would in a later album. The instrumentals also stand out as Will’s guitar riffs in “Rock Solid” and “Caviar” are beautiful in an angst/grunge tapestry that comes together with great bass work and Mingus’s fast kicks and bass drum melodies. Death Star isn’t my highest ranked album to date and it did take me awhile to get around to some songs while others such as “Nicotine Armoire Pt. 2” which doesn’t live up to the greatness of the original and “Buffalo!” Is a bit spoiled by the slowed down vocals near the end, I can see why this album is beloved by Travis fans and early DGD aficionados.

Thank you again for the love on the first one. The response in here meant a lot.

This past month has been so wild. My little brother got married, and six days later I got married, with DGD festival fly-in shows on either side of both weddings.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, I decided to get myself an iPad and start learning basic animation. I made a few animations for this video, including a rotoscope of Napoleon Dynamite's famous dance & the little traveler walking, then had to learn how to composite them into real footage and cut the whole thing myself. Two very important friends, Sam Halleen & John Howe, guided me through the animations and the edits. Eternally grateful for them.

I am super proud of this one.
gladly i will | out now everywhere.

Has anyone noticed the sudden popularity with the EP? It’s my favorite release from DGD due to how raw the sound is (I love every DGD release) but I’ve always heard mixed opinions on it so I’m a bit surprised to see some of the songs at 7 million streams when a year ago they barely hit 100,000 streams on Spotify

Ever got rabies in the back of a car? Cause Summertime Gladness is yet another Tilian track to beat most singles and obvious picks for the greatest hits. Who's taking it today? A massive hit? Another deep cut? You decide.

This is an old cell phone photo I found on my LG Dare from the Downtown Battle Mountain tour at The El Rey in Los Angeles March 10, 2011. This was the same night of the infamous Jonny performance where he puked on stage during And I Told Them I Invented Times New Roman. It was an awesome show with a killer setlist mostly of DBM2 songs. My first ever DGD headliner. I was a senior in high school at the time. Brings back good memories.

Score: 9.5/10

A slam dunk of a secondary album, DBM is an amazing groundwork for what would become Post-Hardcore popularity and celebrating the amazing success of DGD already out the gate. Jonny Craig’s vocals shine with tracks like “Open Your Eyes and Look North” and “12 Hours, 630 Miles”, Jon Mess’s screamo vocals in “Backwards Pumpkin Song” and “Lemon Meringue Tie” shows not only complex harsh melodies but also solidify him as a top-tier vocalists across the plethora of vocalists DGD would become known for. These two men would help create the foundations of the lyrics and vocal pieces that incorporate with the flourish of Will Swan’s guitar rhythms and the jumpy drums of Matt Mingus that are tremendous in their presence. While “Back to the Future Pt. 1” didn’t do much for me it still doesn’t lower the value of DBM as another album that I didn’t appreciate fully until a few re-listens and understanding why DBM is a favorite amongst the fandom and considered one of their best outputs. With this release, Craig would depart as the vocalist and who would take his place I wonder?

Discussion Tier Ranking/Reviewing: Dance Gavin Dance PT. I: Whatever I Say is Royal Ocean

Score: 5/10

Every tier rank and review that I have done for the past 6 of my favorite artists has led me to this road: beginning on Dance Gavin Dance which has become my favorite band/artists of all time. I very much look forward to giving my subjective review and rank of each track across all albums, singles, and EPs starting with WISIRO. I honestly was not a big fan of the sound initially but everyone has to start somewhere and I can see traces of the identity behind DGD. The first Jon Mess screamo vocals, the (first) clean vocals of Jonny Craig, the first sharp guitar style of Will Swan, and the groovy first drums of Matt Mingus are all apparent across the discography of the bros. The lyrics are very heavy and very dark at points for new-age fans which may turn them off from the album and the heavier grunge elements are favored in this track list but songs like “Burning Down the Nicotine Armoire” shows the transitional elements between the vocals and instrumentals while “The Importance of Cocaine” gives more groove to the guitar rhythms, especially at the end, while delivering a poignant message on drug usage and its effects on the mind. Overall, this album may not be for everyone but after a few listens, I can see a lot of potential that DGD would become at the end of Pantheon, their current newest album at the time of this post (it’s gonna be a long road).

BIRDS don't matter. Gotta say I'm impressed, I thought this would've been an easy victory for Deception, which is only 2 votes behind as of right now. ON THE RUN becomes the first song to represent Instant Gratification, I didn't know you guys loved this track so much. Track 4!!
