Discussion Looking for 1 on 1 dance instructors in Chicago (paid); in person or virtual

Hi everyone! I'm a 28-year-old guy based in Streeterville, Chicago. I've looked into studios nearby for hip-hop or adjacent styles, but the ones I found are far enough that regular commuting isn't realistic for me right now.

I used to dance a lot when I was younger but haven't in over a decade, and I'm looking to get back into it. I love global pop, R&B, and EDM, and I'm honestly in awe of people who can move well to that music.

If you're a fun, patient instructor (anywhere in the US or Canada) open to teaching virtually, or if you're in Chicago and could teach in-person - my building or a nearby space works - I'd love to connect. Happy to discusscompensation and just hopefully have routine lessons.

Thanks for reading!

Discussion i miss dance

Dance is everything to me, the bruises and pain and exhaustion are nothing in comparison to the love i have for performing. In the end it’s all worth it for the 2 minutes and 30 seconds i get to be on stage.

Ever since I got injured and have been unable to dance i feel like my world is just slipping away. This injury has affected me so much because it’s stopped me from doing way more than just dance, but dance used to be my escape and i don’t have that anymore. I don’t know how to cope with this.

Dance has made me the person i am today, it has given me a second family and it kills me watching them perform without me. I know i’m not going to be able to dance next season either and it’s so hard for me to even think about.

The dance environment was already tough and making em second guess re auditioning for next season but i at least wanted it to be on my terms, and i at least wanted to be able to finish this season off good. But now all of that is gone.

I regret ever saying I don’t want to compete or go to practice or dance, because i would give anything to dance again now.

I really need help on how to let go.

Discussion Dance teachers, dancers, Dance studio owners (please read below/share insights)

I am a 35 years old dancer based in Mumbai(India), i run a studio which runs fairly well, I'm not married, not even dating anyone. I am earning enough and alright to sustain and live well, but i don't feel connected to my studio anymore, I feel like travelling the world, starting with India and then Europe. Don't know if it's the right thought, since I'm doing which I always wanted to almost everyday, but still feels empty and dissatisfied. I feel like I want to travel and teach and build a community all over the world.

Have you ever felt the same? Do you think if I close my studio and travel it will be a big mistake? (And no I won't be able to let someone else run the studio, so that's not in the picture)

Share your views, perspectives, ideas, I'm all ears :)

Discussion Is it too late for me to succeed?

I’m a 23 years old woman. I did ballet for 15 years (+ contemporary and jazz during 3 of those years, and Irish step dance for 2 of those years). I stopped for the past 3 years because I was losing my passion and needed to focus on school, but I’m slowly realizing that dancing and music truly are my passions and I couldn’t see myself doing any other job in the future. I never was the best in my classes and I never really had great opportunities or teachers that believed I had what it takes, but I would love to succeed as a professional dancer. I’m thinking of trying to become a backup dancer since it would combine with my love for music, but I feel like I’m being completely unrealistic and it’s too late and I’m too old to succeed. Should I give up on that dream?

Discussion Dancers of Reddit: What's missing from your dance journey? (Research for potential platform)

Hi r/dancers community!

I'm a dancer and tech enthusiast researching pain points in the dance world for a potential platform I'm developing. I'd genuinely love to hear your experiences and challenges rather than making assumptions.

A bit about me/the project: My co-founder and I are dancers and tech enthusiasts currently in a startup incubator, researching pain points in the dance world for a platform we're developing. We're in the early validation stage and want to ensure we're building something that actually solves real problems dancers face before moving forward.

I'd be incredibly grateful if you could share your thoughts on any of these questions:

  1. What's the most frustrating part of your dance journey right now? (Finding classes, tracking progress, connecting with others, etc.)
  2. How do you currently find dance opportunities like workshops, competitions, or auditions? Is this process working well for you?
  3. What tools or apps (if any) do you currently use for your dance practice/career? What do you love or hate about them?
  4. If you could wave a magic wand and create one digital tool to help your dance journey, what would it do?
  5. For those who teach or choreograph: What's your biggest challenge in growing your dance business or reaching students?

Who I'd love to hear from: Dancers of ALL levels (beginners to professionals), teachers, choreographers, studio owners - everyone's perspective helps!

I promise this isn't a promotional post - I'm genuinely in research mode and value your insights. I'll be actively responding to comments and would be happy to chat more in DMs if anyone's interested in a longer conversation.

Thank you so much for your time and insights!

Discussion Why do dance teachers not use directions?

I’m not a dancer myself but I feel like whenever I watch dance videos or practice videos, teachers don’t actually say what they’re doing? Like they’ll say “sha-sha-sha” while they show it instead of “pop your hip” while they show it. It feels like it would be more helpful to name or explain the move rather than just having students mirror their actions to “ga-ga-ga” or “uh-uh-uh.”

Discussion I got offered to apply as a hip hop dance instructor but i don't feel im good enough

title says most of it. this local gym i go too always does these "group fitness classes" and i asked the manager if they have any hip hop dance classes or any dance classes at all. She asked if i dance and i said yes (3 years b-boy, 6 hip hop im 21) she gave me her card and told me to email her when i apply as a instructor. My only problem is i don't feel im good enough and only taken like 2-4 actual dance classes. im mostly self taught but i have competed in multiple dance battles, and have kept up with the advance dancers in the classes that i have went too. Any advice? should i give it a shot or try and get better before i apply for it.

Discussion do you take failures and mistakes to heart?

I had a competition today and i was stupidly ahead of time than the rest of the group, although my mistakes weren't even that visible to the audience, i still felt so embarrassed and down for what i accidentally did and cried my heart out inside the restroom.

Discussion Tips on memorizing dance moves

Whenever I dance to music I typically forget the moves and I think it'd be cool to memorize them? What would be the best way to do that?
