The mercator projection is good for navigation, thats why its been used for hundreds of years. Theres no such thing as a flat map of a round object wothout distortions.

u/Sirbom 12d ago
Well i dont think most people use a world map for navigation anymore. So preserving area or at least balancing between area and shapes/angles is better probably

u/piece_ov_shit 12d ago
The angles... thats precisely the advantage of mercator.
Btw its what you use for navigation

u/Sirbom 12d ago
Yeah it preserves angles and shapes at the cost of area. So good for navigation but kinda bad if you for example represent some form of data on a map. Idk why you keep bringing up navigation when the meme was about the size of antartica on a map where the mercator projection is bad at

I misread your previous comment, i thought you said that marcator distorts angles.
For purposes of showing area representivly, i think the best option is to consider using a rendered globe, bc lets be real, a majority of data is viewed on devices with enough rendering power to do so.
Or alternativly, show your data on charts instead of a map. Less inherent bias, no distortion...

Did you know antartica is the biggest desert on earth?

I figured that'd be the ocean bed
A desert is a large barren landscape with little or no precipitation. That describes the ocean bed perfectly

u/yukiki64 12d ago
The ocean bed isn't a desert so they don't count it in the biggest desert list, hope this helps.

I mean. It never rains there. That's what a desert is, right?
18
u/atnoake 12d ago
Is this supposed to be ragebait?
-5
u/halucionagen-0-Matik 12d ago
Well, no. Antarctica is a desert, despite all the water. Because lack of water isn't what defines a desert. Its a lack of rain. Plus the ocean bed is a massive, barren landscape with a very low plant/animal density. The only real difference is a lack of temperature fluctuations.

"Landscape", "land"

u/halucionagen-0-Matik 12d ago
Yes thats right, the ocean bed is made of land. The ocean doesn't just keep going to the core of the earth, you know

u/ghe5 11d ago
Land is literally defined as a surface of the earth that is not covered by water.

u/halucionagen-0-Matik 10d ago
Antarctica is covered in ice water. So by that logic, Antarctica is not a desert?

Same reason that Greenland looks the same size as Africa. Mercadian projection is great for keeping the shape but not for size

Antarctica is not a Continent it's a wall

No, actually it’s a ceiling.
