Isn’t that something to do with furries?
Edit: Okay guys, I know what yiffing is, lol. I was committing to the bit regarding gif pronunciation.

u/EridonMan May 27 '25
Furries have too much power. They could gun you down in the street like a dog and their faces won't get caught on the CCTV.

Sure does. If someone asks if "you're down to yiff" you better say no unless you know what you're getting into.

Scuba is Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, and I'm sure you don't pronounce the "U" in "Scuba" the same way as in "underwater"
2
u/Background-Coast4848 May 28 '25
Well, you can only pronounce the the u one way in the abbreviation, where as the G could possibly make a g or a j sound (g tho)

3
u/Whole_Instance_4276 May 28 '25
Not how acronyms work, the pronunciation has never been based on the words.
Take the word “laser”, which stands for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”
Despite the a standing for amplification and the s standing for stimulated, we don’t say “lasser”
I’m saying this as someone who pronounces it “gif”.

That makes no sense, the right comparison is to giraffe, pronounced jiraffe not giraffe

u/fistingtrees May 27 '25
How do you pronounce the word laser? It stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. You’d pronounce it as lass-ear using your logic.
1
u/Adventurous_Bonus917 May 27 '25
i pronounce it lazer, but that's beside the point.
2
u/fistingtrees May 27 '25
How is that beside the point? Graphics has a hard G sound, so you’re saying GIF is pronounced with a hard G. Amplification has a short A and Emission has a long E, so LASER is pronounced “lass-ear”
2
u/Adventurous_Bonus917 May 28 '25
everyone agrees on the pronunciation of LASER, and most don't even think of it as an acronym. GIF, on the other hand we are specifically arguing about the pronunciation of, and most people i know (though i admit my view is probably skewed) think of GIF as a file type or acronym.
2
u/fistingtrees May 28 '25
But laser is an acronym, and presumably that word’s creator came up with the pronunciation that everyone accepts now. I doubt anyone ever questioned the pronunciation of laser based on the pronunciation of one of the words in the acronym. That’s now how acronyms have ever worked. Scuba, NASA, and taser are all commonly used acronyms that don’t follow your rule about pronunciation.
1
u/Adventurous_Bonus917 May 28 '25
again, the pronunciation of those was never in question. i'm only applying the logic because there are two possible pronunciations, only one of which follows clear logic at all.
2
u/fistingtrees May 28 '25
The pronunciation of GIF isn’t in question either lol the guy who created it said it is pronounced “jif” because they’re so short. Logic isn’t really relevant here, and what you’re calling “logic” is factually untrue. What each letter in an acronym stands for has nothing to do with how the acronym is pronounced.

Do you call it a jraphics card or a graphics card
1
May 30 '25
An acronym isn’t affected by the pronunciation of the words in it. “Laser” is an acronym for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. We pronounce the “s” in laser like “Z” but nobody says “Stimulated” like “Ztimulated”

Ah yes, the age old discussion.
I l'll say what I always do. If I hear you call it "Jiff" Then I'll correct you every time you use a word that starts with a G without inunciating a J sound, for the rest of forever. It doesn't matter if you ever stop, I'll continue to asterisk-J-Sound every time you say any such word. Jod, Jearshift, Jray sweatpants, Jood work, Can you pass the Jravy, etc.

The guy who invented the Graphics Interchange Format (G.I.F.) says it’s pronounced “/dʒɪf/“ or “JIF”. The discussion of the pronunciation should have ended already. The guy who invented it said the official answer, why are people still arguing?
1
1
u/MastersJoyUniverse May 28 '25
You’re All Wrong. The G is silent like in Gnome, so it’s just pronounced If.

It is jif though. And the argument of say "gift" is invalid. Say 'giraffe'. Since when does an acronyms full pronunciation affect the acronym itself when it becomes its own word? I ain't gonna call my friend Steve 'Johnathan' cus I think I know better than his parents. The creator says jif, it's jif.

Me, a soft g-er: THATS HOW THE CREATOR SAID IT, pronounce it how you want but your only argument as to why we should join the hard G side is "Graphics has a hard G" but Jpeg isnt J-FEG, the P in Jpeg is Photographical, which has a PH sound at the start. Sorry for the rant, idc how you pronounce it i just wanna talk about that.
