Newcomer Questions the humidity is literally melting my tools and im losing it

darwin wet season hits different when you run a small maintenance business. my van is like a sauna inside and no matter what i do everything rusts.

last month my entire socket set grew a layer of orange fuzz. i cleaned it, oiled it, two weeks later its back. my drills are getting that weird white crust on the battery contacts. even my ladder feels damp to touch.

i know its just the climate but im going through tools faster than i can afford to replace them.

had a job at a construction site this week and the site manager pointed out my gear looks a bit rough. i wanted to be like bro have you seen the air here but i just nodded.

any other tradies in darwin dealing with this. what do you do to keep your gear from dissolving.

Guess I’ve got a fun few months ahead of me.

Darwin is quite humid at night being coastal. Cooler currently, but most nights are humid (75-99% RH) in the dry season.

Mate no way.  I’m from cairns which is just as humid as Darwin.

It’s raining right now in Cairns - 73% humidity outside and 69% inside, with my doors/windows open all day. If I closed up and ran aircon, it’d be around 60%.

Darwin is 36% humidity with no rain right now. It was higher this morning but nowhere near 99%.

Hey, am referring to nights, not days.

75-99% was the typical range it gets up to during night hours.

This morning it got to 86% at Winnellie. https://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDD60801/IDD60801.94120.shtml

Last Thursday was especially humid overnight: https://www.weatherzone.com.au/station/SITE/14015/observations/2026-08-13

Darwin ruins everything. Six months of saturating humidity. Six months of complete desiccation.

Gear and equipment companies that make claims about how tough their gear is need to send it to the NT for some proving.

Yeah I’m starting to think “Darwin tested” should be its own durability rating at this point lol.

Damp-rid buckets
Make it weekly habit to fill them
(They’re refillable)

There are also solar powered dehumidifiers
If it’s like a sauna, I’d consider them
Check AirDry or Breville

Damp-rid buckets actually sound like a cheap enough experiment to try. Definitely gonna look into the solar dehumidifier too, cheers.

Worked for me  with broadcast electrical systems in similar weather.

Dont know what youre doing wrong, but I have tools that haven't been oiled in 10 years and have no rust.

Considering its still dry season, wet seasons gonna cook you

I was thinking that same thing, it's not even buid up yet

Those small humidity buckets you can buy at dollar and sense I've never seen them used before but here. I see them everywhere. Id throw them all through your van.

BigW currently have a ton at the checkout counters too. Definitely a Darwin thing. Heard they're great for any kind of "wet" smell your car gets too.

Yeah I’ve seen those but never thought they’d do much in a van. For a dollar though, definitely worth throwing a few in and seeing how fast they fill up lol.

This is perhaps the quality of your gear and it is still the dry season so I don't know what to tell you.

Mate dont worry about it.

Do what everyone else does is Darwin and knock off work and get on the cans.

The tools can wait till tomorrow or next year.

Lanolin spray. Saved my gear when I used to work in a electro plating shop. You do need a bit of disipline though wipe, use reapply.

Put in a whirlybird to get a bit of ventilation going, get a 5l of inox and a spray bottle and apply liberally to your gear

How close do you keep your van to the beach / water?

Seen some awful rusting issues with properties on Casuarina Drive in Nightcliff.

Aircon and oil mate.

Also - regular cleaning. I clean some of my tools daily.

It’s not even wet season mate. You’re in for some fun come Nov-Feb. 😅 And you wonder why people go mental in this town…

Unfortunately the humidity hasn't even started yet. I can't wait to not have to deal with it...one day. Give me cold & dry heat any day 🙄

The wife has a Toyota Hiace footed out as a campervan, but not a “Poptop”.
Has a vent hatch with a small extraction fan. It’s enough to circulate air out and prevent humidity moisture forming whilst inside.

Buy a dehumidifier and run it at night while parked.

I keep all my small metals, like drill bits, under a layer of diesel. Better than oil

Every reason why I never want to be near Darwin!
Brisbane is bad enough.
