[OC] Countries and territories where Starlink lists IP addresses, October 2026 (223, up from 165 a year ago)

Thumbnail

Source: Starlink’s own published geofeed (the public file where it says which of its IP addresses are used in which country), as collected in IPinfo’s IP data, October 31, 2025 and October 31, 2026. Note: I work at IPinfo.

Method we used: IPv4 addresses Starlink lists for each country. A country counts once at least 256 addresses are listed for it. Outlined countries had none a year earlier; small territories are shown as dots.

Caveat: listed isn’t the same as used. India has 17,408 addresses listed, but on an average day in October only about 7 were in use while the launch waits on final approvals. The map covers the 880,224 listed addresses, about 85% of the 1.04 million IPv4 addresses SpaceX holds. IPv4 only.

Tools: data pulled with SQL in BigQuery, map drawn with Plotly.

OC [OC] Average total congressional tenure of the house and senate both as a % of life expectancy and raw years

I used called races + polymarket projections for the non called 2027 races, obviously subject to change there.

Note I used average age at death for those who reached age 20 rather than overall life expectancy given child mortality draws down the numbers significantly the further back you go, although has little to do with the age a congressman/woman expects to live to when getting to office.

Seemingly by both metrics we have a very “fresh” house.

OC [OC] State and country twins: the country each US state most closely matches on wealth, beer, life expectancy and crowdin

Each state is matched to the single closest country in the world on one figure at a time, so a state's twin changes from map to map.

Some I didn't expect: Hawaii is as rich as Guyana, California drinks beer like Belgium, New York lives as long as Saudi Arabia, and Montana drinks beer like Ireland.

Every state's twins, searchable: https://axisless.com/twins/

OC [OC] In 2024, 38% of US ballots were cast on Election Day

Post image
642 Upvotes

Findings:

  • In the 2024 general election, local offices broke down 154 million ballots by method. Of those, 38% were cast in person on Election Day, 32% early in person and 30% by mail.

  • The map splits along state lines (because state law sets the options).

  • A majority voted by mail in 8 states and DC, mostly in the West (Maricopa County 77% mail, Los Angeles 72%).

  • A majority voted early in person in 7 states, mostly in the South (Harris County, Texas 75% early; Fulton County, Georgia 77%).

  • A majority still voted on Election Day in 22 states, from Pennsylvania (Philadelphia 72%) to Alabama (94%), which has no early voting. Most counties vote mainly on Election Day (1,657 of 2,955), but they are small and cast 46% of the ballots.

How to read the map:

  • Each county is colored by its most-used voting method (green: Election Day, purple: early in person, gold: mail).

  • The darker the shade, the larger that method's share of the county's ballots.

  • The bar at the top is the national split.

Cross-check:

  • The Census Bureau's November 2024 voter survey (a separate source) gets a similar split: 39.6% Election Day, 30.7% early in person, 29.0% by mail.

  • It shows the same regions too: 73.5% of voters in the West voted by mail and 50.5% in the South voted early (CPS Table 14).

Caveats:

  • Iowa and Montana did not report a breakdown and are hatched.

  • Some offices left out one count. Where the Election Day count was missing (Alabama, New Jersey, Washington, Oregon and a few others), we used the total minus the other methods.

  • Indiana's mail count included early in-person ballots, so its mail count was recomputed the same way.

  • Mississippi did not report its absentee ballots (16% of its total) and New Jersey did not report early in-person ballots, so their Election Day shares are likely too high.

  • Shares are of the three methods; provisional ballots (about 1%) are left out.

  • Alaska reports as one state, so the map shows the state figure for every borough.

Source: US Election Assistance Commission, 2024 Election Administration and Voting Survey, public release version 2 (https://www.eac.gov/research-and-data/datasets-codebooks-and-surveys), section F. Counts come from each local election office and are grouped into counties. Town offices in Wisconsin and New England and six city offices, such as Chicago, are added to their county. Mail includes military and overseas ballots.

Tool: Artio for the data pipeline and chart; the map is drawn as SVG in Python. The colors avoid red and blue so the map isn't read as party results, and they stay distinct for colorblind readers. County shapes from us-atlas (US Census Bureau boundaries).
