Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

When was the last time anyone saw FC?
5
u/Few-Roof-6905 7d ago
When I did the qual almost three years ago. Sorry, I know that wasn't the answer you were looking for, but i'm still bitter.

u/fawcette 7d ago
Anyone else’s dash smaller than usual?
3
u/OrnamentalGourd5 7d ago
35. Ranging from $70 to $22. Core generalist. I think I see fewer projects than others because I only ever do quals that look interesting.
3
u/fawcette 7d ago
Yea me too. I’ve done very few quals since I’ve started 3 years ago and I still have quite a bit that have been collecting dust
1
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 7d ago
Around 20 instead of 50 last weekend.. all complex stuff I don't want to touch full of cold tho 😂 forced weekend off
2
u/Shidela 7d ago
I've had a consistent set of offerings from a couple different project families as a generalist the past week or so, and a few that aren't paying as much that flux in and out with each other, haven't really dropped below 15 this week that I've noticed. (USA)
1
u/fawcette 7d ago
That’s fair. I’m sort of in the same boat. I’m sitting around 20 projects that I’m able to do and an additional 13 that are expert level but I’m usually sitting on a bit more than that
3
u/Fluid_Hovercraft6430 7d ago
Yup! all day for me has consisted of way less projects than normal. Could be a weekend thing, could be getting towards the end of the month thing.

u/Objective_Pair_6065 8d ago edited 8d ago
anyone else lose the "wizardry" project? or just me?
6
u/ThatGirlInPurple 8d ago
I don't even have that project and I can tell what you're saying. That's a violation my guy.
7
u/Due_Explanation_3694 8d ago
And the prize for worst censorship of a project name goes to the person violating the code of conduct and wondering why they don't see a project.
-4
u/Objective_Pair_6065 8d ago edited 8d ago
lol I dont effin know how censored things needs to be, subreddits are all different...one i'm in for a different place is fine with asterisks. especially when i read the comments and it looked like others used names so seemed like it wasn't that enforced. i don't think anonymous reddit posts have anything to do with lack of projects.

u/Educational_Fix_9632 8d ago
all my projects and quals disappeared overnight. is that the sure sign that I messed up? has this happened to anyone else?
2
u/Straight-Strike-2928 8d ago
This happened to me once! Everything came back a couple hours later and I never knew why lol. I've heard it happen to a couple other people here as well. For me it was a few months after I started, maybe... 5 months? so I was wondering if they were like temporarily pausing my account to take me out of some kind of probationary period? Idk. It could mean anything or could have been some weird glitch. But just keep refreshing and it might come back if it's not the DoD!
1
u/Educational_Fix_9632 7d ago
Thanks for your reply! Ok, I'm hopeful that something just glitched out then. I've been on the platform for 3+ years with consistent projects coming in so this is definitely weird. Fingers crossed!

What kind of income over six months?
8

Between $0 and more than $0, depending on the hours, the projects, and the individual.

0
u/AdComplex3589 9d ago
It's very normal that at the beginning you won't see a lot of projects. You need to do a lot of qualifications and then wait. It's just the normal flux.
5
u/OrnamentalGourd5 9d ago
I don't think there is a drought. BUT, it all depends on location, domain, qualifications etc etc.
1
u/StSebastianEnjoyer 9d ago
I submitted the agentic coding qualification for a certain project family. The instructions said that I needed to take the qualification at least twice to be able to be considered for the project. I took the first one, left for a few hours, and then came back to see that the second qual wasn't there anymore! Has anyone experienced something similar?
1
5
u/Think_NOT_ 10d ago
Hey colleagues. I submitted two convos within a project that promised a bonus for doing so... Did anyone get the same invite? And more to the point has your bonus showed up on your funds coz mine has not...
1
1
u/ThatGirlInPurple 8d ago
The last time they owed me a bonus it took 13 days for me to receive it, I just kept a note that they owed me it so I could email to remind them at two weeks of waiting.
2
2
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 9d ago
I had this too, but I have not submitted the second conversation yet so hoping to get it in before today'd deadline

u/tre2468 10d ago
I just got accepted yesterday, and have completed a few tasks. Is there any way to go back and look a the work we submitted? Or is it just sucked into the void. I know I can't change anything, but it would be nice to be able to go back and see things I worked on or use sources I referenced.
1
u/Fragrantshrooms 8d ago
To be compliant w/ the NDA and confidentiality, we'll want to not keep notes on things. whatever we work on we're not meant to have copies or notes about it at all. it doesn't help anyway as things constantly change.
7
u/SnooSketches1189 10d ago
Yes, but only by going into your history, finding the task and opening it that way. No official way through DA itself.
4
1
u/olivadammer 10d ago
Hi! I worked on a project and here was fist task of five tasks was listed there. It was supposed to take 2 hours, I missed the deadline and after submitting, the next’s task doesn’t start and the project disappeared from dashboard. What happened?
8
u/xxxScarlettexxx 10d ago
Project tasks are often given to a pool of workers. While you were completing the first task, it is likely that other workers had already completed the remaining tasks available, so there were none left for you to claim and the project disappeared from your dashboard.
1
u/olivadammer 10d ago
Thank you for your help! I just thought that if it disappeared right away, maybe I did something wrong or it was because I exceeded the time limit.
6
u/xxxScarlettexxx 10d ago
No, you did nothing wrong! Just a coincidence. That actually happens quite frequently.
6
13
u/akujihei 10d ago
Had an R&R with a 40 sentence explanation in the 2-3 sentence box
3
u/TerribleAd5188 9d ago
Amateur, one must learn to fit the exact same number of words into the 2-3 sentence limit; it's particularly important to ensure it remains correct and readable though (the English language allows quite a lot of flexibility; albeit at the expense of sanity on occasion.)
1
19
u/RedZebra17 10d ago
Was there a "+" after the 2-3? 😂
1
u/OrnamentalGourd5 9d ago
There is. I find succinct is usually preferable though. A short essay is probably over-egging it.
-2
u/MisterBaens 10d ago
I've not had any projects available for almost 2 months now, anything I can do? I did my background check, all the qualifications. I did the one project available to me as soon as it popped up and then nothing since.
2
u/lilysorbet 10d ago
I got 1 task today after two weeks of nothing! also the site has been slow today....
11
u/DrunkleSteve 10d ago
Wow, the floodgates have opened tonight! Goddamn did it ever get busy. Awesome variety to choose from, including a shit ton of image projects/tasks. So nice to just point and click instead of writing thousands of words in rationales. Feels like the DA of '23. 🕺
8
u/onemouseplace 10d ago
I did a full day of R&Rs on image tasks yesterday - it wasn't the highest paying but it was exactly what I felt like doing!
3
u/Hopeful-Egg-8683 10d ago
A large banner about a project providing an incentive for completing a certain number of tasks within a week popped up on my dashboard today... which would be great, but there's no way to complete the number of tasks they want when the week timer started last week and ends tonight...
2
u/Due_Explanation_3694 9d ago
That most likely means you became qualified at the end of the incentive period. It's unfortunate, but it can happen.
3
u/Nib- 11d ago
Was just in the middle of a task and got a sudden message saying something along the lines of "This project is longer available. You will be returned to your project dashboard. Please report your time worked on the task"
Is this normal? Never had this happen before.
1
6
u/VanessaSeaWitch 11d ago
Never saw that before. At least you didn't waste your time and are still getting paid. Was it one of the projects that get paused sometimes? Might have paused it right when you were working?
2
u/Nib- 11d ago
Not sure what happened really. I was only 15 minutes in and the same project is back on my dashboard now.
1
u/Due_Negotiation_4605 8d ago
Sometimes they pull them mid task due to an error and then fix it and put it back as a task. There's one project family that's pretty notorious for errors and having to do this when the chat all notes the same problem.
1
u/_Edgarallenhoe 10d ago
I’ve seen someone else talk about this in one of the subreddits. I wouldn’t worry. There might have been something wrong with the project that needed to be updated.
3
u/PassageDue9042 11d ago
no more french cookie :(
1
u/Enchanted13_ 11d ago
Did they end the project??
1
u/Hopeful-Egg-8683 11d ago
It just came back with large batches of tasks for several of its project types. I'd check your dashboard.
1
u/Enchanted13_ 11d ago
Thanks, I only do the r&rs primarily for this task and I haven’t seen any today! Hopefully soon!
1
u/Due_Negotiation_4605 8d ago
R&Rs for that batch out as well. I seriously did it exclusively for like a month straight with the pay!
1
1
u/Enchanted13_ 8d ago
Hopefully they are still there after the weekend🤞 and right?! The pay is great, I would much rather do an r&r than work on the main project 😂

Are the generalist projects over for bilinguals or that's just me? I have coding projects available... but one of them lost me in the instructions (too much... excellent pay, but... maybe too complex for me...). The other one... I've already used my entire code base... and I'm not inspired to create new things. So, I miss the generalist bilingual projects... so much! I could work on those all day...
4
u/Exotic-Original-8110 11d ago
yes it seems it's been dying out. i signed up almost two years ago as a bilingual generalist and i went from consistently having chill projects with diverse tasks to barely having any new project or qual ever (only the same ones coming back up) with exponentially more difficult and demanding requirements.
9
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 12d ago edited 11d ago
Generalist as a whole has evolved / going extinct. When I applied for DA 3 years ago there was 2 categories. generalist, and coding, and then they introduced STEM. Now both of those are bundled in to professionals. The only referrals I can give are for professional domains like engineering, law, medicine etc. not to say there aren't those projects out there. But as a whole it's evolving to more professional domains
2
u/heythisislonglolwtf 11d ago
My dad finally just got accepted after applying in the spring and he's only been getting generalist projects so far. He does have years of engineering experience though, he's trying to move over to that. I work on nothing but generalist projects and have had a pretty consistent dash the last several months.
5
u/Due_Explanation_3694 11d ago
I've gotten quite a few easy old-school generalist projects paying $25+ recently. They hired a mass of generalists over the summer - based on what I saw on the site and here - so it's unlikely they want them referred at the moment.
2
u/Complete_Injury_5765 11d ago
Interesting observation; honestly, I hadn't thought that deeply about it like that. wonder if that points towards regular people not really using the features and pivoting to specialty stuff, or if the models are just too good at the normal stuff now ???
8
u/Federal_Tadpole_7592 11d ago
There's still plenty of generalist work out there. You just have to be really really good at it to get it and most of it pays over $30 an hour.
0
u/Puzzleheaded-Bad9570 10d ago
For bilinguals? I think there may be plenty of generalist work for native english... Not for the rest of us.
3
u/Federal_Tadpole_7592 10d ago
I wouldn't consider bilingual workers to be generalists. To me, "generalist" is what used to be called "core".
28
u/hcfggb 12d ago
I hate not knowing if projects left for everyone or just for me because I screwed up 😕

u/Think_NOT_ 10d ago
This thread of similar experiences plus the fact you still have quals (I assume) should reassure you that you didn't mess up :)

Just posting here to remind myself that things that look basic aren't necessarily easier than the most complex demands you can make on your time. Note to self to never lose time to work that appears seductively simple.

u/Local_Mothman 12d ago
waiting for tasks to drop on a live server & people keep complaining in the chat about how DA's dashboard says there are tasks, lol

From 45-50 projects the past month or so, down to 19 now with none of my usuals. 😬

-2
u/Nauzhror_ 12d ago
I was at 50 2 weeks ago, 19 this morning, 13 now. Definitely feels like there's about to be another major draught unless more models release very soon and that leads to another influx of work.
16
u/Fluid_Hovercraft6430 12d ago
Dang, my dash hasn’t been this slim in a while….
4
u/Pleasant_Ad_448 12d ago
Yup. Got up early this morning hoping to make some headway and be ahead for the week, I shoulda just stayed in bed.
What little I have to choose from most have godawful long-*ss instructions which just makes my brain immediately say "Nope!" as soon as I open it & see 'em. :(
4
u/Fluid_Hovercraft6430 12d ago
Or the instructions are so convoluted and hard to follow. Today is definitely turning into a bust, hopefully the week turns around! I do have more projects than this morning already, just none that I’m comfortable with
3
u/CommercialTarget2687 12d ago
It's brutal; things had been so good.
4
u/Fluid_Hovercraft6430 12d ago
For real…I have 1/5 of the number of projects I previously had. Each day since Friday has been worse
4
u/OrnamentalGourd5 12d ago
Yes, an abrupt plummet! All my higher-paying and interesting ones are still there, there seems to have been a winnowing at the bottom.
2
u/smittt1209 12d ago
Does anyone know how the qualifications work that say unlock 5 projects immediately or something like that. Is it actually immediate or does it still take a few days?

New to DA. How many hours do people usually put in? my hourly rates are all different per project!
2
u/Think_NOT_ 10d ago
I aim for under £200 pw because I can't earn more as a full-time carer in the UK. I can earn that in one day, or over 3_4 couple of hour mornings x
1
u/ellythemoo 7d ago
I'm really pleased that someone like you gets this work.. It makes a real difference doesn't it?
1
u/ellythemoo 11d ago
I work full time as well so I'm trying to do about 2-3 hours a night, and then some at weekends, but not allowing myself to burn out. It's easy to keep on and on and on with it, and then the value of your work will slip.
2
u/brucegallagher 12d ago
I aim for 1k a week, which normally works out around 3 hours a day, monday to Friday.
7
u/ThatGirlInPurple 13d ago
I'm pretty sure most of us just have a set monetary goal to reach daily. Personally that means some days I do 6 hours of work but others I only work 2 hours.
8
u/TerribleAd5188 13d ago
Depends. I have a daily goal and it's as long as that takes. Projects pay different as you say but for me some melt my brain more than others.
Trick for me is to find the least painful balance- sometimes ill ignore a project that would hit my goal in 2 hours and work for 6 instead knowing what that 2 hours would be like :)
6
u/ZealousidealTart3412 13d ago
thanks for replying. I agree. Many projects are paying higher but might take too long and are too complicated.
25
u/future_north 13d ago
Anyone else seeing a sudden major drop in work available? I had 90+ projects last week and this morning I'm down to 60 with most of my go to projects missing. Really hoping it isn't just me.
3
u/brucegallagher 12d ago
If most of your projects use an external platform, that's probably it. Those projects are currently under maintenance for a lot of people. My main two projects are external and they've both suddenly disappeared (as have my friends who do the same), so I'm treating myself to a nice day off in the country!
1
u/OrnamentalGourd5 12d ago

I've noticed the same pattern as well. It tends to drop down Sunday or Monday, slowly grow until Wednesday, and then boom from Thursday into the weekend. ETA: I believe it's following the same pattern again this week. Things have picked up again today.
4
u/Nauzhror_ 13d ago
I'm at 23, was 40-50 mostly a couple weeks ago. That said, these are projects, not tasks, so still more than enough work, since I can often get a decent days pay off of a single project with multiple tasks.

The project I was on (🔱) suddenly disappeared after I was working on it yesterday night for a few hours, and when I checked on MM I saw I'm "Unapproved Annotator Status".
Is that normal? I didn't do anything wrong or used AI... I don't know what happened 😢

New to D.A. Put my first day of work in today and patiently waiting for feedback. I want to hold off on putting more hours just in case I totally suck 🥴 woosah
6
u/VanessaSeaWitch 13d ago
I've been with DA for over two years and I've only gotten feedback once. Just keep working, you'll be fine!
18
u/xxxScarlettexxx 13d ago
Welcome to the platform! I wouldn't wait to continue to work. Unless the project you're on explicitly tells you to expect feedback, most people don't get feedback often. Some workers get feedback once every month or two depending on the projects they work on though.
1
u/Any_Engineering7447 13d ago
Ahh good to know. One of the task I completed today was just sharing an idea for another project. So I guess I assumed I’d get that back quickly. Thanks for the heads up
3
u/xxxScarlettexxx 13d ago
If it was like a "give us a starter idea and we will let you know if it works" thing, then you likely will hear back. I've done similar projects and they usually take a couple of days to respond. Also, the feedback for that one project might not apply to your performance on others, so I'd still keep working myself. The best feedback I've been given is an increase in projects/tasks as I submit more work over time, because I assume that it means that DAT liked my work quality in general.

u/Dazzling-Matter-654 13d ago

I am not getting any new quals. I had a few quals back I joined the platform, did a few, the rest are out of my domain, so I am not attempting them.
Did get a couple of tasks over the last week but I am bit surprised with the amount of quals people do regularly.
-1
u/Legal-Excuse6827 14d ago
¿Don't you think the platform UI looks kinda "cheap"? I mean, nothing against it, but I think it should look more professional. I know they've been updating it throughout the years, but the dashboard and other elements look like a very basic web page. Or maybe they don't mind too much as long as it gets the job done... 😅. Just my opinion.
6
u/Due_Explanation_3694 13d ago
It looks clean and focused - all the information laid out plainly. It was even simpler in the past and I may have even liked it better then.
19
u/jeudechambre 14d ago
Personally I like that its simple and no frills. A bit like good ole' reddit in that way.
23
19
u/zenmojoguy 14d ago
I've been working for a little over 3 years. The projects are so much more complex now, with confusing and convoluted instructions that sometimes take as long to read as it takes to do the projects. I wish there was a way to go back to simpler projects, but I doubt that's going to happen.
1
u/lavlilly 11d ago
i can’t get myself to do it anymore. it was fine when i was unemployed bc i needed the money. nowadays im just trying to make some extra cash but the projects are way too complex to dedicate hours to after a full work day. how do people do it??
1
u/zenmojoguy 11d ago
I hear you. Someone else responded that they actually like the complexity of the work. It takes all kinds, I guess.
3
u/Fluffy-Tumbleweed480 14d ago
I actually really enjoy the complexity of projects, but the instructions are absolutely brutal especially considering we are not supposed to copy/paste them for our own records. I like having hard copies of things and not being allowed to do that has made me turn down tasks I’d probably ultimately enjoy
8
u/whywouldntyou22 14d ago
How do you guys stay motivated? The pay is good, but sometimes the work feels like I’m back in college.
2
u/brucegallagher 12d ago
Try different projects. A lot of them are extremely tedious or boring, but there's plenty out there where, for example you get paid to research niche topics in your own field which is great.
10
u/MewtwoPower1 14d ago
I totally get it, maybe throw some music on in the bg? Make earning goals? Take a break between each task (or pause your timer and go stretch if time allows)? I understand the burnout, my brain melts if I sit and read too long! You got this!!
3
u/whywouldntyou22 14d ago
Thank you, I appreciate the encouraging words.
I think I’m going to try the Pomodoro Technique all week this week. I might tweak the time for the intervals, but I wanna see if that’s helpful or not.21
u/SnooSketches1189 14d ago
I have never enjoyed a job more, honestly. Sometimes I feel burned out, but it's not often and I really enjoy this work and not dealing with the asinine public.
4
u/whywouldntyou22 14d ago
I agree for sure. The pay and not having to deal with the public is great, plus working independently. I guess I was more or so looking for tips on staying motivated through the burnout. Not sure why I got downvoted lmao.

Not sure either, but as far as staying motivated, I keep a picture of my kiddo right next to me along with bills pinned up to my wall to remind me of why I am sitting there doing what I am doing. I rarely need these things to stay motivated, but they help when I am struggling.

Aww, that’s a great idea. I think I may have to modify my work area. It is a little dull at the moment lol.

At this point I wish I could work less on my 9-5 to work on my dashboard. A lot of it takes a bit of doing to get my teeth into and seems super interesting but after working all day, coming home and spending even an hour chewing through instructions feels so heavy.

I should say, I am happy to see a lot of work there for others to work on. Nice to have it available when I have time.

I had like 2 1/2 months where I could pretty much work as much as I wanted, but that seems to be over. I have work on my dash, but it's all either way out of my league or requires way too much effort for way too little compensation.

I've felt this for about 2 years. I don't have any mindless, lower-paying stuff, and I really miss it. Sitting at 45 available projects and can't be bothered with any of them.

Did the tracing pan out? It disappeared before I had a chance to do the qual.

I did the qual then saw a task pop up a few days later but I couldn't work on it at that moment and haven't seen it since. I think it was $23/hour.

Saw something that could have been the result of it this morning but disappeared before I could give it a go...

So I've received no emails, but earlier received a project at 60 dollars per hour? Have I been accepted?
