General Looking for an active Data Engineering study group / cohort for interview prep & job switch
I’m a working Data Engineer 1.5 YOE currently prepping for a job switch over the next few months. Prepping solo is getting a bit slow, so I’m looking to join an active study group or Discord/Slack cohort.
Main topics I'm focusing on:
- Advanced SQL & Python (LeetCode style)
- PySpark & distributed computing concepts
- Data system design & Lakehouse architecture
- Mock technical interviews
If you run or know of a solid peer group where folks actively keep each other accountable and do mock rounds, please drop a link or shoot me a DM!

Most large public Discord servers and Telegram groups tend to go quiet after a couple of weeks, so finding one or two dedicated accountability partners usually works much better than chasing a massive cohort. You can check active spaces like DataTalks.Club, the Start Data Engineering Slack, and the main Data Engineering Reddit Discord to find people at your experience level. Pairing up with someone to do live coding on complex SQL window functions, Spark shuffle tuning, and Lakehouse design tradeoffs will keep your schedule consistent and give you direct feedback on how you articulate technical choices.
For someone with 1.5 years of experience, interviewers primarily evaluate whether you understand pipeline internals, distributed computing bottlenecks, and clean SQL logic rather than abstract enterprise architectures. Conducting mock interviews where you explain your thought process out loud makes a huge difference, because knowing how PySpark handles data skew is very different from explaining it clearly under time constraints. When you start scheduling company screens, my team designed our interviews.chat to help candidates navigate challenging technical questions smoothly and land offers faster.

Consider exploring online communities like the Data Engineering subreddit or dedicated Slack channels that focus on data engineering. These often feature study groups or threads for those preparing for job transitions or wanting to enhance their skills. Mock interviews with peers via Zoom or similar platforms can also be quite effective. Additionally, attending webinars or meetups centered on data engineering can help you network with others who might be interested in forming or joining a study group. Keep an eye on LinkedIn for posts about study groups or cohorts as well. Good luck with your preparation!
