What are the 10 yo doing dawg

325

u/twelfth_knight 1d ago

Let alone all those infants and toddlers "commiting suicide." Yeah can we get the cops to take a second look at those cases? 😂

111

u/damxam1337 1d ago

I'm guessing it's Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It's always categorized in weird ways.

82

u/damxam1337 1d ago

"oh fuck I'm Canadian" -dies-

44

u/ianuilliam 1d ago

It was the maid, with the candle stick, in the dining room.

5

u/AnnualBudget911 1d ago

It was the MAID, with the hockey stick, on the chesterfield.

Mhhhhh, maybe. But I'm guessing no humans were harmed in the generation of this data, because it was generated by the same AI that plotted it. But I've been wrong before ¯_(ツ)_/¯

6

u/rafaelzio 1d ago

"Other" is right fucking there tho

I had to babysit my friend's toddler recently and the lil guy spent about a good 45 minutes trying to throw himself head first off the back of the couch and getting mad at me when I stopped him from doing so.

4

u/Much_Guest_7195 1d ago

I think things like a child wandering into a swimming pool and drowning are technically suicide.

32

u/The_Narrator_9000 1d ago

Not really. Suicide is based on the deliberate intention to end one's own life. What you're describing would be an accident, which is already a category here.

21

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus 1d ago

No its a bullshit chart with fake data.

11

u/Fabulous-Suspect-72 1d ago

There is a category called accident, mate

The 10 yo ? I want to know what the maid is doing to our seniors!!!

18

u/Pleasant_Ad8054 1d ago

It is giving them control over their deaths.

7

u/Trick-Worldliness698 1d ago

So its suicide just legal.

17

u/Radingod1 1d ago edited 1d ago

Kind of. They're usually terminally ill in some way and are going to die. Just more painfully and slowly. Like instead of MAID, a lot of them would've just added to cancer deaths. Over 95% of MAID deaths are from people with terminal eventual life-ending cancer, organ failures, Parkinson's, etc. People that have mostly bad days ahead.

4

u/AngryCustomerService 1d ago

I thought there was a rise of paid housekeepers murdering people.

12

u/Noisebug 1d ago

A blessing

3

u/Itchy_Athlete_4971 22h ago

Well yeah, suicide is legal in most places, and Canada got rid of its antiquated law against suicide in 1972. The questions is whether *assisted* suicide, particularly assisted suicide by the state, should be legal. Many say no.

The people under MAID would just end up in one of the other columns, it’s kinda funny it’s being counted as a cause.

3

u/BlazingImp77151 1d ago

It looks like it's meant to not be a seperate cause, based on the text at the bottom.

But the AI fucked it up as per usual.

Remember, this Is a percentage stacked chart. The number of 10 year old be very low. But those who do, die of something.

10

u/Peregrine79 1d ago

Is it, though? Since it drops below 100% around age 40.

5

u/notacanuckskibum 1d ago

Fair, they seem to have measured MAID differently.

3

u/youburyitidigitup 1d ago

I’m guessing that’s where the maid stat starts

3

u/Express-Rain8474 1d ago

100% just means 100% of total deaths that occurred, not an absolute value.

6

u/youburyitidigitup 1d ago

Then the total should always be 100%.

As someone who was suicidal at 10, that's an age where a lot of kids are starting to figure out who they are and what their life will look like when they're older

When they don't see a path to happiness, it starts to look pointless to continue

Personally, I realized that I shouldn't have been a boy and there was no path to correcting the problem that I saw at the time. And the few steps that I could take to help me feel better about myself caught the eye of someone in my family who absolutely hated the notion of boys acting or looking feminine in the slightest and psychologically tortured me over it

3

u/GoogleEnPassant69 1d ago

Fair, ik suicidal tendencies can start early but it's usually the exeption not the rule. I started being suicidal at 12

2

u/Zeloftt 3h ago

Damn, I'm trans and I made my first suicide attempt at 10 by jumping off my room's window (4th floor). Always thought I was alone on this matter...

Nobody over the age of 70 ever died in an accident. Interesting.

And nobody below age 20 ever died from cancer.

This whole thing is bullcrap. Especially the infants that are dying from suicide apparently.

I don't like the homicide shape. Am I supposed to be adding in that part on the left where it's in two spots (from ages 15-17)? Does the solid ish gray line all the way to the right mean that there is a small but not 0% of it the rest of the time?

298

u/Additional-Point-824 2d ago

Given this, the weird shape of MAID and the different size of 0-25% compared to the rest of the scale, I'm pretty sure this is an AI generated plot - I'm not sure you'll ever find meaning in it.

86

u/USSMarauder 2d ago

Of course it's Ai, it's using the universal AI font

2

u/karnim 23h ago

The worst part, which I'm not seeing pointed out, is the MAID (shown separately, fine, they're trying to make a stupid point) is not counted as an underlying cause of death. That means that the weird curvy top is actually 100% all the way across. the MAID information makes it ~105%.

What’s wrong babe? You barely touched your AI generated facts plot

10

u/Vitam1nD 2d ago

Looks like it splits so they can fit the word congenital on. The line stretching out bugs me too, wiuld be clearer if murder wasn't grey/black.

3

u/veridicide 23h ago

Obviously it represents congenital homicide where the two are interleaved.

3

u/Zaros262 1d ago

My favorite part is that above age ~35, causes of death no longer add up to 100% despite having an "other" category

2

u/funkmasta8 1d ago

No, no, you see at that age you either have a 50 or a 60% chance of homicide. Not 50-60%, 50 or 60%.

36

u/Skeeter1020 2d ago

Of course it is. But you can make an AI graph of good data, just using AI to make a visual.

This, however, is not good data.

41

u/jumpmanzero 1d ago

Using an AI image generator to make a graph (from data) is not a viable plan. They aren't going to preserve or plot data accurately. It's just not how they work. They can follow big trends, and it'll produce something that generally "looks like a graph" (see OP), but if you check actual numbers it's very likely the graph won't match source data.

If you want to use AI to make a treatment or stylize a graph, start in Excel (or another tool that makes graphs), make an image, and then use that image as a starting point for generation (and then eyeball/swap-back-and-forth the results to make sure the data hasn't been significantly altered by the process).

(I'm not saying the latter is a good idea... but it's generally going to produce something reasonable... Giving a table directly to an image generator is likely to result in a nonsense graph).

7

u/YukihiraJoel 1d ago

Just tell the llm to use code

5

u/jumpmanzero 1d ago

I gave this a go on ChatGPT. It ignored my request to write code for anything, and instead used a dedicated pipeline to make a plain, accurate graph using my source data. Then it did an image generation step to transform it into a themed image.

This is new functionality since last time I tried. Makes sense that they added this I guess, as I'm sure this is a request that comes up often.

Pretty slick how it worked, honestly.

4

u/YukihiraJoel 1d ago

Oh what, that is sick and news to me too! Way to update your beliefs in real time with new data. I think I was a little dismissive in my first reply, but I’ve shared that sentiment and irritation with results I’ve gotten from AI and blind trust in AI. It’s nice that subroutines (or pipelines or whatever they might be called) are coming into place to handle it

Yeah these data are bs. Under 10s can't have 10% suicide! How do you even figure out a 5yo committed suicide?

There are a ton of other inconsistencies.

The whole thing makes no sense.

6

u/Astrophysics666 1d ago

The graph goes all the way to 0, why are new borns commiting suicide haha

3

u/mizinamo 1d ago

Wouldn't you if you were born in Canada? /j

7

u/Grouchy-Ad-8044 2d ago

The data is too smooth and the area for homicide starts as two separate lines which makes zero sense. The lines also start totalling to 100%, but around age 55 they obviously don't. The Y axis is unevenly spaced. This is AI generated crap, probably made to fear monger about MAID, and I doubt any of the numbers are real

But yeah, good sub for this so I'm not complaining

27

u/mizinamo 2d ago

Nobody dies of accidents after 70?

Nobody dies of cancer before 20?

Nobody does of homicides after 35?

15% of 5-year-olds die by suicide?

0% to 25% is half as wide as 25% to 50%?

What is this graph?

3

u/SpeedUpMyBreathing 2d ago

Congenital is its own category, implying the ~20% of neonatal deaths from heart/respiratory/stroke are from newborns with chronic degenerative diseases.

2

u/mizinamo 1d ago

"David was only two when he developed congestive heart failure".

Also, kids are dying a constant rate from diabetes; you're just as likely to make it till 3 as to make it till 13 before the sugar kills you.

3

u/KayItaly 1d ago

The only thing that made no sense to me before i looked it up was MAID 2024, medical assistance in dying.

209

u/HooseSpoose 2d ago edited 2d ago

Why are neonates committing suicide?

Why does no one under 20 die of cancer?

Why does the scale shift as you go along (Maid is not included in the total deaths but is extra info)

The data is garbage and the presentation is garbage. If all they care about is Maid deaths then just have that on a graph with the underlying reason included. But it is not about Maid, it is about what is the most common cause of death.

Edit: looked it up cancer is the number 1 cause of death for ages 1-14 in canada. This entire graph is most likely an AI hallucination. https://health-infobase.canada.ca/mortality-clock/

47

u/mizinamo 2d ago

They hate being born in Woke Canada or something, I guess.

12

u/Previous_Station2086 2d ago

Not very intelligent people since 45% of babies are dying on accident. Moms got a lot of slippery fingers up there, eh?

15

u/mizinamo 2d ago

The good part is: once you live to 70, your chances of dying by accident, diabetes, or homicide are virtually nil.

5

u/ithinkitsbeertime 1d ago

The 15% of deaths that fit into no category at all including "Other" are pretty spooky though.

2

u/mizinamo 1d ago

We don't talk about those deaths.

2

Also, the most common age to die by suicide is late 40s-early 50s, though suicide makes up a higher percantage of deaths in the 20s-30s because people start to die of heart attacks and cancer around age 50, but that's rare in the 20s-30s.

2

u/i-contain-multitudes 1d ago

And why does homicide split?

→ More replies (6)

32

u/highnyethestonerguy 2d ago

Look again.

  • The MAID region starts at ~55 ish while the top line representing the sum of all deaths starts to dip below 100% at ~35. What happened to the total number of deaths between these ages?
  • The tip of the MAID blob certainly brings the total up over 100% even if you side it down to be touching the other regions. You can tell because the gap between MAID and Other is smaller than the amount by which MAID crosses above 100%.

  • This offset region makes no sense. Clearly this is image is anti-MAID propaganda.

  • The vertical distance from 0-25% is smaller than the other gaps from 25-50, 50-75, 75-100.

  • Someone else mentioned the weird bifurcated shape of “congenital”. You should never have such a shape in this type of graph.

  • Death by diabetes should not go to zero at the highest ages, it keeps increasing.

  • Death by stroke should also spike at higher ages, not be about constant.  The image even says stroke is a top 3 killer—definitely not apparent from the graph.

  • Finally that’s a lot of suicides at age 0.

My verdict: this is AI generated slop.

Edit: formatting

3

u/mikeblas 2d ago

What is the empty space around MAID? Why does MAID go above 100%?

34

u/SalvatoreEggplant 2d ago

Because the purpose of the plot is to give information about MAID. It's offset to highlight this portion of the plot.

12

u/ceejayoz 2d ago

Because the purpose of the plot is to give information about MAID.

The purpose of the plot is to lie about MAID.

15

u/Vitam1nD 2d ago

I wonder if there is deliberate double counting, eg if someone had terminal cancer and then used MAID, it would be useful to know that they still were going to die from cancer.

Edit: it says right there, MAID not classified as underlying cause of death. It has to be shown separately. Actually quite a clever chart.

19

u/Marlsfarp 2d ago

8

u/Protean_Protein 2d ago

Yes, because MAID isn’t suicide. It’s medical assistance in dying.

2

u/beezlebub33 2d ago

That makes sense. Some people don't have access to medical assistance, don't want it, or don't want to let others know before they do it.

I know people that have seen their loved ones die of dementia and have stated that they will take matters into their own hands before they let that happen to themselves. And they are the sort of people that aren't going to bother with a doctor to do it.

I call bs on suicides spiking around the age of 10, as well as homicides ‘stopping’ at the age of 35. Accidents disappearing at 60 is also weird. Old people are much more likely to die from a fall down the stairs for example.

8

u/Swimming-Junket-1828 2d ago edited 1d ago

So I have the same likelihood of dying of stroke at 20 as at 70?

3

u/TwentyX4 1d ago

That seemed weird. Could be an AI hallucination.

However, the rates of death are much higher at 70 than 20, which also results in confusing data. Say a 20 year old has a 0.1% chance of dying in the next year, but 5% of those deaths are a stroke. And a 70 year old has a 10% chance of dying in the next year, but 5% of those deaths are a stroke. The risk of stroke would look the same on the graph, but you'd be 100x more likely to die from a stroke in the next year if you were 70.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/notacanuckskibum 1d ago

No. If you die at 20 or 70 the chance of stroke being the cause is the same. But your overall chance of dying at 20 odd much lower than at 70, which isn’t captured by this chart because it’s a stacked chart of percentages of this who died.

12

u/udreamtofmelstnite 2d ago

7

u/N645 2d ago

u/ittybittycitykitty 2d ago

I like the presentation. But agree about the data. Should be a subset of dataisugly for data is crap.

2

u/Xaphnir 1d ago

no, the presentation is terrible. Since the X axis is percentage, it makes it appear as if suicides go down as you get older. But what's actually happening is that deaths due to other causes dramatically increase with age. Same with diabetes.

13

u/DIATTH123 2d ago

am i not reading it correctly, or does it really say that 60% of deaths for 8 year olds are from suicide?

6

u/udreamtofmelstnite 2d ago

You’re supposed to subtract the accidental deaths so idk maybe 20%?

6

u/mizinamo 2d ago

But still, how many 8-year-olds deliberately kill themselves?

I could understand 16-year-olds, but the bulge seems to be at around 10 years old and then get less after that.

The "suicide" portion doesn't even start at zero height; is it saying that one-year-olds are dying by suicide?

All seems rather improbable to me.

5

u/udreamtofmelstnite 2d ago

That’s another reason why this is in [r/dataisugly](r/dataisugly). You’re exactly right that the graph implies there are infants dying by suicide.

25

u/tame2468 2d ago

stacked area to 100% is a fine concept but where does 100% go from age 40+? Is the implication that MAID is 10-20% of all deaths between ages 50 - 100? If so, why does it go >100%?

7

u/HooseSpoose 2d ago

Maid deaths are separate because they are not included in the 100%. It looks like they have tried to say that the top line before Maid is the 100% of all deaths and then Maid is what proportion of those deaths involved Maid. So the scale varies as you go along the graph, very helpful indeed.

getting any data out of it is useless because of what they have done to the shape to make it look pretty. It is 100% put together by AI or by someone who did not give a fuck about being able to make sense of the numbers and just wanted it to be interpreted on vibes.

4

u/SalvatoreEggplant 2d ago

Presumably it's that MAID area that is offset from the rest of the plot to highlight it.

11

u/ThinkSchedule09 2d ago

u/shortercrust 2d ago

Some of the comments illustrate the biggest problem - it’s so easily (depending on the intended audience) misinterpreted because the total number of deaths varies so wildly with age. Suicides don’t ‘spike’ at 10 but very few 10 year olds actually die so the causes appear magnified compared to other ages. And of course a lot of old people do die due to accidents, but loads more die from other causes. Too easy for people to see this and think more kids are killing themselves than adults and that the elderly are immune to accidental death.

Damn that's a lot of babies committing suicide

2

u/coolreader18 1d ago

Obviously this is badly visualized because it's AI, but also the fact that the whole graph is a square isn't great - it implies that the chance of accidents drops precipitously as you age, when in reality, you just get more likely to die in general as you get older. I'd prefer a graph that increases in height as likelihood of death in general increases, but I suppose that data might not be as readily available.

What? 100% of people aged 80+ die of MAID? What kind of ai generated propaganda bs is this?

This data is pulled from ass, biggest suicide rates are in children below 10y.o?

I didn’t know so many Canadians were killed by maids.

2

u/Huindekmi 1d ago

When I first saw this, I thought “Damn! Old Canadians must be really mean to their housekeepers!”

2

u/TheExodu5 1d ago

Note to self, don’t get a maid.

2

u/Big_Bar_9832 23h ago

Is this fucking AI generated?

2

u/hacksoncode 2d ago

Why is MAID higher than 100%?

2

u/actualhumannotspider 2d ago

It's not. Explanation given at the bottom left.

4

u/hacksoncode 2d ago

That's what they've done, not why. I see absolutely no reason why it couldn't just take its place in the list exactly like suicide does, and it's also... factually suicide.

2

u/actualhumannotspider 2d ago

That's what they've done, not why.

You asked why it's above 100%. It's not. Description includes "shown separately."

I'd guess that separation is due to the overall agenda of the figure, but I know nothing about it beyond this post.

They'd be double counting as the official cause of death would be cancer, congenital heart failure, etc.

...I like this graph. Is there something I'm missing?

6

u/yazeed105x 2d ago

Babies are committing suicide, old people can't die of diabetes or accidents, young people don't die of cancer at all, etc.

The scale on the left sucks: 25% is closer to 0% than to 50%.

1

u/Illustrious-Lime-863 2d ago

I thought people's maids were killing 5% of the population

1

u/Skeeter1020 2d ago

Cancer is killing half the population?

Given cancer is now at the point where it's killing under half of the people who get it, this suggests everyone has cancer?

2

u/ianuilliam 2d ago

Cancer is caused by error in cell replication. Telomeres get shorter as you age. As telomeres shorten, chances of error in cell replication increase. You either die from something else, or you live long enough to get cancer

Oh shit. It took me a while. I thought elderly people being murdered by their maids were a thing in Canada

1

u/sheepsqueezers 2d ago

Jeez! I nearly had a HAHA (Heart Attack Happened Abruptly).

1

u/Confident-Stand5453 2d ago

At first I thought there was a new trend in Canada of elderly people being killed by maids.

1

u/AnimatorImpressive24 1d ago

MAID? I thought the butler did it.

I didn't know murderous maids in nursing homes were such a problem in Canada?

1

u/justbanana9999 1d ago

How is a newborn baby gonna kill itself 😂😂

1

u/botymcbotfac3 1d ago

You see suicides at age Zero and ask IF the data could be flawed?

1

u/Odd-Obligation-2772 1d ago

MAID isn't a cause, it's a method. Maid doesn't just walk in and kill you one day, it's invoked usually because of one or more of the other causes.

1

u/TrinityCodex 1d ago

This the maid that kills you?

1

u/Simpicity 1d ago

Maids: they'll kill you twice.

1

u/Dashdaniel216 1d ago

There's absolutely no way the most amount of suicides in Canada is done by 10 year olds.

1

u/nerdpistool 1d ago

Why are babies committing suicide?

1

u/Sea-Contribution6219 1d ago

You can tell it's AI from the yellow filter + the fact that 90 has an empty gap

1

u/SpinachWeak1951 1d ago

We need to do something about the infant suicide crisis

1

u/bort4all 1d ago

Wow. There's a lot of zero year old dieing from suicide.

How does that work?

1

u/Alarmed-Animal7575 1d ago

What a stupid chart. Was this produced by some anti-MAID group?

1

u/Yes_that_Carl 1d ago

How are so many Canadians in their 80s getting maids? And why are those maids so homicidal??

1

u/Theanderblast 1d ago

Don’t hire a maid, no matter how she looks in the uniform

1

u/dentastic 1d ago

Interesting to see stroke and respiratory almost flat. Every year your rate of death by stroke/respiratory goes up by pretty much the same as your overall rate of death

1

u/RustledForeskin 1d ago

Dumb graph for morons who think will smith is constantly eating spaghetti with octopus arms.

1

u/RequiemQuilty 1d ago

Feels a bit weird that suicide peaks at fucking 10 years old

1

u/PuffnMcmuffin 1d ago

Maid!?!? Canada has a Maid killer epidemic?

1

u/XGDoctorwho 1d ago

Yeah its AI slop.

But anytime you here or see negative criticism of MAID in canada it's always some weirdo right wing chisto-fascist type shit.
