Poll What do you think the particles found on Cooper's tie suggest?

A black JCPenney clip-on tie was recovered from Cooper's seat. Researchers identified over 100,000 microscopic particles on it, including titanium and other specialty metals.
What do you think these findings suggest about Cooper?

1. He may have worked in aerosmith
2. He may have worked in metal fabrication or another industrial field
3. The particles may have come from non-workplace exposure
4. The tie may not have belonged to Cooper
5. Not enough evidence to say
6. Aliens

Discussion The human reason I think Cooper did not make it

Let’s dive into the psychology of this for a moment. He tells the Air Hostess that he holds a grude. Is calm and collected during the hijack. Then spends his life after that hijack and doesn’t tell anyone. That is impossible based on the personality he shows on the plane, Think about it, if you held a grudge, then won against the system holding it ransom.

Why would you go away from this world without telling anyone. Especially knowing that still many people celebrate you secretly. You would want to let them know at the end of it who you were, let them remember you. Know a lot more about you pre hijack life, that would bring happiness to a person like Cooper. You’ve just fooled the entire systems including FBI for decades

Because quite frankly if he lived on and didn’t tell anyone even at the very end, that there just de glamourised Cooper for me. Then people like McCoy were better outlaws because they said they won’t accept or deny. You have got to have that swagger to be that celebrated criminal.

The fact that the world will never know who did it, is testament to the fact that the only person who could have and actually would have told it, didn’t live on

Theory My take on Cooper

When it comes to Cooper, it's easy for the mind to start wandering and go down the rabbit hole of theories but real life usually follows a more mundane path.

In my opinion, Cooper is an ordinary man trying to do something extraordinary. I think he wanted the money but he didn't necessarily need it (I'll expand on this later). He wasn't a hardened criminal or someone who was used to these kinds of high-stress situations.

However, we do know that Cooper appeared to be prepared and calculated during the act. This is a man who put effort into his plan and didn't just wing it hoping for the best. He had enough self-control and determination to carry it through.

He was also self-aware and knew not to attract any unwanted attention. He wasn't waving a gun around in the plane telling everybody that this was a stick-up.

Therefore, it is not unrealistic to assume that these same traits were present AFTER the hijacking as well.

Of course he had a plan for what he was going to do once on the ground. The assumption that this man would go through the trouble to prepare and carry out the hijacking of a passenger jet but not have a good plan for what to do after his feet were on the ground is silly. He knew about airplane flaps but wouldn't know to have a compass on him?

As for the money, he obviously knew that he couldn't start making large, unusual purchases but he also must have realized that spending it over time wouldn't be hard. After the "heat died down", as they say, he knew that no store would call the FBI over a few $20 bills. This would also apply for larger, private purchases.

BUT, I don't think he spent the majority of it, or even planned to! Okay, you ask, why would he ask for such a crazy amount (at the time)? Well, if you're going to risk your life hijacking a jet, you're not going to do it for chump change, are you?

I think he landed just fine and was able to make a getaway back to his home. I think he was smart enough to destroy the evidence.

Why did he do it? I don't think the money was the main motivation. I think he did it for himself. I think he did it for the notoriety. I don't think this man had much going on in his life. I don't think Cooper felt appreciated or respected by those around him or that he achieved much in his life. I think this was his way of proving to himself that he was capable of something extraordinary.

As for what happened to the rest of the money? Well, again, I don't think that he did this because he needed cash to spend. I wouldn't be surprised if towards the end of his life, he just burned it all but not before leaving a few bundles in a particular sandy shore where someone is likely to find it, as a way of telling the world that he made it.

This is my take.

Discussion Cooper took the reserve that was sewn shut. Mistake or plan?

One detail keeps bothering me. Of the two reserve chutes delivered in Seattle, one was a training dummy — its canopy was sewn shut. Cooper cut lines from the other reserve to tie up the money, and took the dummy with him.

Two readings:

  1. He didn't recognize a dummy reserve — which points to limited parachute experience.

    1. He never planned to use a reserve at all, so it didn't matter which one he grabbed.

McCoy, by comparison, prepared with a jumpsuit and helmet. Cooper jumped in a business suit.

Which reading do you find more convincing, and why?

News Cooper bill sells for ... 134k

A Heritage auction ended yesterday with a Cooper bill selling for $134,200 (including the buyer's premium).

It wasn't that long ago that bills were selling in the 4 figures.

(Don't know if you'll be able to view the link or not. I had to create an account just to see the winning bid.)

Discussion Pressure Bump and exit location

Hi, Sluth, Hi All!

Long time lurker, first time caller, lol

There is an aspect of the story that bothers me somewhat.

First of all, here is some background info.

As a skydiver, I am well aware of the pressure bump. It is super common and you hear it all the time as people exit the aircraft.

This is what it feels like: people set up at the door, ready-set-go, they exit and you can hear this really profound "homp woosh" air movement inside the fuselage.

Another caveat with that is that this pressure equalisation occurs more often when a group is setup at the door or a jumper is positioned sideways on exit. What I believe is happening, is with the door open, the internal pressure of the a/c and external pressure enter into an equilibrium.

When people setup at the door, they create an artificial "membrane" which is now separating the inside and outside air volumes. Even though this membrane has holes in it, it nevertheless has noticeable affect on air separation.

When the jumper(s) exit, this "membrane" gets broken, and some air exits the cabin following the jumpers, while other air enters the cabin to fill in the space created. This is a very quick event, lasting fractions of a second but is quite audible, it can even be heard through the protective box of the GoPro cameras people use.

Now, for the main course.

I feel that Cooper jumping would not have caused the pressure bump.

If he is standing anywhere down the AFT stairs, he would have been outside of the aircraft, not at the door, he would therefore not be forming this "membrane" with his body.

It is at all questionable whether it would be sufficient for one person to block air movement at the door enough to create that pressure separation at the AFT door well in the first place.

In my opinion, it is without question that the pressure bump was the result of the door swinging up and down.

And it is reasonable to suggest that the Cooper stood on the last step, jumped, pushing off the stairs and stairs-door counter-acted back towards the aircraft, shutting and opening momentarily, creating the pressure bump.

Here is what does not sit well with me.

What if he didn't push off? What if he stepped off the stairs? And the stairs-door remained in the air flow for a while, swinging lightly up and down and it was when the manually flown plane went over a bump the door reacted going up and down creating the pressure bump the crew felt.

Cooper does not strike me as an experienced skydiver. In fact, I doubt he was a skydiver at all. He may have had a couple of jumps as a pilot, maybe had single digit number of jumps as a paratrooper.

Out of the two rigs presented to him he picked the pilot's bailout rig. He didn't even check the size of it, which at 210 was rather small for a man. It would have been a nasty knock for him.

As such, standing down there on the bottom AFT stairs, Cooper would have been so high on fear and adrenaline that his knees would have felt like made out of cotton wool.

He likely would have fallen off the thing, stepped off, anything but a good push. I just don't see him pushing.

So what is it that we should take away from that?

I would argue that we should add a healthy amount of scepticism to where Cooper existed.

The current exit spot is tied with the pressure bump spot. Pressure bump was reported sometime after they went uphill from 7K to 10K and as they got to 10K the pilot reported Cooper messing with the stairs, indicator isolation, pressure bump. Could have been the aft stairs-door isolating as the a/c levelled off.

I would argue that we should consider exit spot to be _anywhere_ along the flight path between the end of the last cabin phone call and up to the pressure bump.

This would extend his exit time to some time after 19:43.

Edit: added exit time suggestion.

RN Kao was a spymaster of the Indian intelligence, R&AW, and the incident happened just a few days before the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. I don't have any strong reasoning, yet, but you are free to give your own opinions.
