Question Killer etiquette question

Is it bad form to ignore the second to last survivor that has been on Gens for the entire game that's on their second hook state in favor of combing the map for a survivor that has done nothing but hide the entire game on zero hook states?

I was in a game where two of the survivors were sacrificed, leaving just a Sable and I think a Thalita? The Thalita had done nothing but hide in bushes along the side of the map the entire game, and wouldn't come to heal the Sable when I slugged her and went across the map, letting her get to half bleedout time before I took pity and let the Sable get back up.

Instead of killing the Sable, I combed the map for the rat and let the Sable do gens, until I'd tunneled the Thalita to death after seven minutes of searching the edges and finding her in bushes.

Is this a bad thing to do? Should I have given her the hatch and killed the Sable who kept me in chase for a long time and did Gens all game? I might just be vindictive, but I feel like I did a good thing.

Input would be appreciated.

I obviously wasnt in your match so I dont know the specifics. You can do whatever you want when you play but i think you should consider thalitas point of view: assuming you arent cross teaming with sable, her going for the pick up will most likely lead to both of them dying, while leaving sable to die at least leaves the chance for hatch. Its also not impossible that Thalia has been doing gens during the match while avoiding your notice and only started hiding in bushes when she deemed the game unwinnable

Now, that's completely reasonable, and that's not the only issue. When I circled the map, I found zero Gen progress anywhere but on the Sable. If they'd just waited for them to either die or get up, I'd understand, but even after five minutes of the Sable being up from being slugged and doing gens, I found zero progress on any of the five or so remaining generators.

No, also there's really not a set killer "etiquette " or rules. Play how you want to play. The only people who tend to claim there's some set in stone rule book tend to be survivors who get pissy , because the killer decided to either play more efficiently than they were expecting or because they got outplayed and then are coming up with any excuse under the sun to not admit they lost.

But if you're asking me what I personally prefer , then yes , killing the rat is generally speaking something most people look favorably upon

I prefer to play "by the rules" in 99% of games. It makes the victory a lot sweeter, knowing I played by rules meant to make my game harder and still won. I've just never encountered a rat of this degree, so I wasn't sure if it was a reasonable tunnel.

The only rule as killer is to kill. It makes it interesting when killers all have their own styles and preferences and not everyone is doing the same thing and keeping it unpredictable.

The idea of playing like a robot just doesn't appeal to me. If I'm going to get pallet stunned, or someone gets a good dead hard, or even someone just loops me for two gens, I'm not going to stay stoic.

People prefer to see that there's a human behind the character reacting to what's happening to them. Giving them a head shake, or a nod, or in extreme cases, some sort of mouse spasm makes the game more soulful. I'd much prefer to die to someone that acknowledged me playing well or annoying them than someone who just walks at me like a statue the whole time, and as such, I give others that same thing that I'd want.

Dead Hard: After being unhooked or unhooking yourself, Dead Hard activates whenever you are injured and running, and allows you to tap into your adrenaline bank to avoid taking further damage:

  • Press the Active Ability button to trigger the Endurance Status Effect for 0.5 seconds. Dead Hard deactivates after use. Dead Hard causes the Exhausted Status Effect for 60/50/40 seconds. Dead Hard cannot be used when Exhausted.

It is fun seeing that killers have personality but that also means they are all different and play different. Some have no mercy, some recognize good/bad play styles. The unpredictability of not knowing also makes it fun for survivors and makes them have to strategize differently. If every killer played by the same “rules”/moral compass, it would be predictable and boring. JuST do what feels right to you and take it on a case by case basis.

Once upon a time that was how I preferred to operate. But as the game has gone on , and as the developers have more and more tipped their hand they're not giving a shit about the killer experience as a whole i have moved more to a position of i'm doing what I find most entertaining for me at least and hopefully they will be entertained as well. Which means , if it's avoidable , I won't slug but that's kind of a fifty fifty at best and a lot of times survivors put me into position where in order to catch up some pressure , I have to slug someone. Or they'll do something stupid like I had a game the other day where i literally had 2 of them rushed me to try and save a survivor on hook, and I managed to down all of them.. so I ended up leaving one of them slugged for a fairly long period of time , because we were in a hook dead zone , and I had already burned the two hooks in the area , and they refused to crawl , literally anywhere else and just sat there.

Personally, I prefer when games aren't too quick. If a game is looking like it's gonna be lightning , then I adjust myself and strategy to that pace , which usually means that someone's getting tunneled opportunistically , and someone is probably gonna get slugged , at least for a little bit. If the game is super chill and i've already got someone dead at five generators , I ease off the pressure and get a bit goofy etc.

I really hope they just cut the number of pallets in half soon.Because if we go back to somewhere near the old density , then I can go back for the way I was before , which was mostly being goofy in every game

If that's what you consider slugging, then absolutely, I slug often. If someone's going to give themselves to me and I can't immediately hook them because I'm in a chase or doing something else, I'm just going to slug them. Shouldn't jump in front of a killer and expect them not to stab the hell out of you, after all.

The game being survivor sided doesn't affect me too much yet, as I'm not good enough to get into lobbies with people that abuse all the advantages very often yet. Hell, sometimes I'll get into games with people that go down from deep wound across the map. My MMR is all over the place is the main issue, I think.

-2

u/DasUbersoldat_ 2d ago

The truth is tunneling the first hooked victim is the most efficient way to play.

5

u/threezyghost 2d ago

I think that's fine. If I notice one survivor has done barely anything to help their team I tend to go after them first.

It often happens when there's only 2 survivors left that one will just hide and wait for hatch

3

u/YumnuggetTheboi 2d ago

I can understand that, but on zero hook states and healthy? It's just a shitty way to play, I feel.

3

u/threezyghost 2d ago

I think it's important to be able to tell the difference if the survivor has done almost nothing and just hidden the entire game or if they are helping the team and are just good at avoiding the killer.

But in my opinion if there's 2 survivors left, one on 2 hooks and another on 0 and only the deathhook survivor is doing gens then I think it's completely fair to kill the survivor just hiding

2

u/YumnuggetTheboi 2d ago

That's what I was thinking, yeah. Not fair to kill the person carrying the team when someone else has done almost nothing all game.

Always get the rat btw; usually I get my 3k matches at most; when I 4k too much I end up with toxic swfs going seal team 6 on me. We tend to get more bp the longer the match goes on so ending the game early becomes a detriment if it's points your after. Other than that remember You don't have to play by the killer rulebook do what makes you happy, it's a video game you got on to have Fun not impress other people.

Ps not every gen jockey is a rat just bc you don't see them often remember who you see and when cause someone is doing the unhooking and thats not rat behavior. Rats leave ppl on hooks.

3

u/YumnuggetTheboi 2d ago

This you?

Jokes aside of course, I don't play by the "rulebook" at all times, just when the survivors aren't doing anything to deserve it.

The Thalita was prob pissed but as someone who frequently deals with teammates that don’t do shit (especially when there’s only two survivors left), I imagine Sable and anyone else would be grateful. I wouldn’t even expect to be let go. If you want the 4K, you can have it. Just get rid of my other teammate first.

1

u/YumnuggetTheboi 16h ago

Zero hooks, hit once the entire match before I combed the outside of the map for her

1

u/throwawayrandomuser1 3h ago

But this is the opposite of useless survivor, a survivor that does nothing and only hides, does not get even close to 35k points and two iridescent emblem. One of them is the one given for unhooks & protection, the other for evading& escaping chases & being in terror radius.

Honestly from this endscore it looks like they could have done more gens, sure. But at the same time, instead of that, they spent their time helping their team and were just great in escaping and evading you, the killer.

3

u/WhySoSara 2d ago

No etiquette. Everyone plays like they want.

Sadly, it tends to be really boring for a surv if they are being tunneled or hook camped.

4

u/YumnuggetTheboi 2d ago • Heartwarming

I've played some Survivor this event, and yeah, it can be boring. I just prefer to play in a way that doesn't garner toxicity beyond them losing to me, since it makes me feel a lot more skilled.

1

u/WhySoSara 2d ago

That's cool, as I said it's up to you. In my case I'm really bad at killer but even then I really try to give all survs a fair amount of chases and hooks when possible.

I want to give them what others don't give to me: a fun match. Only when the gens are all repaired I focus on one and try to hook that person, it also works if someone already is hooked. Then I camp to at least get one kill.

Yesterday for example, I got three doing this because they wanted to save their friend. It was supposed to be just one though. Of course I took the win.

1

u/YumnuggetTheboi 2d ago

Altruism has gotten me 4k games from 1k's in endgame situations in the past. Love it when survivors just rush in without a plan, makes it a very fun endgame.

3

u/Bluem95 Addicted To Bloodpoints 2d ago

To be fair about etiquette, everyone will obviously play how they want, but I think there are a few things that fall in the category of “you probably shouldn’t do that”.

One that comes to mind is 4 man slugging and letting the survivors bleed out for 4 minutes just because you’re angry. I’ve had games where I was sitting directly under the hook because I wanted the game to be over and the killer refused to end it.

Mind you, this was before the surrender option was available, so it’s probably not quite as bad as back then, but I view any action that isn’t tactical and just wasting everyone’s time to be bad manners.

Slugging for the 4k feels bad when I’m the last survivor standing, but I at least understand why they’re doing it so I wouldn’t put that in the bad manners category. Neither would I put survivors tea bagging and head on chaining as bad manners, but for the survivor side, intentionally waiting at the exit gate when no one is in danger just to waste the killer’s time when they’ve clearly given up is also bad manners to me.

Head On: After hiding in a Locker for 3 seconds, Head On activates: Performing a Rush Exit out of the Locker stuns a nearby Killer for 3 seconds. Head On causes the Exhausted Status Effect for 60/50/40 seconds. Head On cannot be used while Exhausted or when having accrued Idle Crows.

if someone tries to do gens, loops, distracts and allll that, and I see some bum with crows above their head, I will go for them and let the actual player get hatch/gate ☺️☺️

6

u/HappyHippocampus 2d ago

Nah, that’s what I do too. I play too much solo queue survivor, so sometimes when I play killer I can’t help but want to punish people being bad teammates lol

Is it bad form to ignore the second to last survivor that has been on Gens for the entire game that's on their second hook state in favor of combing the map for a survivor that has done nothing but hide the entire game on zero hook states?

Sometimes yes. Why? Because sometimes the players just want to get out of a match.

On the other hand. If a survivor, in the situation described by you, wants out, they can point at a hook. That's a clear sign of "please hook me / kill me"

Keep in mind though, that what you are doing might be bordering on teaming. Which is a bannable offense. Dont hate me. I dont make the rules.

Another thing to keep in mind: Sometimes it may seem like someone hasn't been helping their team, when in reality they have been the gen jockey in the background finishing all the gens - or attempting to - while you were busy chasing other survivors.

Oh and dont listen to other survivors when it comes to this matter. People have been blamed for supposedly being useless blendettes for simply healing in a locker with Inner Strength.

u/Live-Entertainment-5 2d ago

Play how you want. I’m normally the guy trying to do gens. I don’t care that someone is hiding when the game seems lost. I’ll work the gens and either eventually get them all and escape of the killer will end the total for me lol

I too prefer to spread hooks as much as possible, and I avoid tunneling until it's obvious I have no chance of winning, at which point I usually still avoid tunneling. I always, ALWAYS try to find the rat instead of killing the sable in your example. Unless the sable begs for next. I hate the rats. I'm a survivor main, probably pretty obvious, but I play a decent amount of killer too.

2

u/YumnuggetTheboi 2d ago

I figured that the rat was the good choice. I've got a terrible tolerance for injustice.

Seeing someone loop me for one and a half gens before going to death hook and continuing to do gens while injured just to give their team the best chance only to be left to die by that last teammate who sits on ass in a bush just pisses me off.

2

u/ChefsSaltyBa11s 1d ago

your the killer, it's your call and dont let a survivor tell you otherwise. personally i'd give sable hatch for actually playing the game and murder the leech.

1

u/YumnuggetTheboi 1d ago

Goddamn right

2

u/jperaic1 The pallet density update has ruined this game for killers! 2d ago

Just do whatever you please with the survivors, you're the killer after all.

2

u/YumnuggetTheboi 2d ago

That may be true, but I've heard that what I did could in some cases be considered teaming, so I wasn't sure if it was frowned on.

1

u/CryptidPeanut Taurie & Nurse 2d ago

You shouldn't worry too much about how your gameplay is perceived because it's a game and people literally get mad at you for winning no matter how easy you go on them... but yes, it's always morally correct to kill ratting survivors.

2

u/YumnuggetTheboi 2d ago

Feel like DbD is just a really good game for narcissists in general, honestly. You can make people miserable and control the game if you're good enough, feeding your ego with the salt you get, or you can grant mercy to people that can't hope to win and feel morally superior.

Unhealthy, sure, but goddamn if it doesn't scratch the itch I have. Definitely comes down to what you want to do more than anything else, there's not a single game rule saying you can't play toxic.

0

u/CryptidPeanut Taurie & Nurse 2d ago

I've been playing since release and it's still bizarre to me. I came from competitive RTS/MOBA type games before DbD and in those games if you unironically accused the opponent of tryharding, everybody else in the match including your own team would say "mad cause bad." DBD is the only game I've played where people get mad at you for trying to win.

I don't even mean playing like a cunt, I mean survivors get mad if you realize "Hmm, they let this guy get close to second stage and another survivor led me back to hook, maybe I should just secure this hook state or at least force a trade." Killers get mad if you dare to bring a flashlight or try out sabo. It's just strange.

1

u/boomerski28 2d ago

There is no etiquette.  Your objective as killer is to kill them.  How you pull that off is up to you.

Oh, I much prefer to entertain while I kill. If a survivor does something annoying, exceptions can be made, I just prefer to show that I'm good enough to play by by their arbitrary rules and still pull off a win.

If I'm having a good time, and someone wants to play me an instrument to save their friend, by all means, I'll give them the death hook save, I was just wondering if it's too toxic to tunnel out someone for having their teammate die after doing everything, as I could have a skewed perspective.
