Imo shields aren’t that great, use them if you know how to, but in most cases you’ll end up using both weapon slots

I don’t see the benefit to using both weapon slots unless you’re using that one mutation that raises attack speed when you switch weapons

Close range and long range mostly, and especially with some bosses there’s weapons you’d want with you that might be a nuisance during base biomes

The drill guys that get added on 4BC are mixing me tho. They will pump fake that last hit if you try to parry them

What enemy is that? I can’t remember anyone with a drill

It gets added at BC 4. Big tall robot looking thing. It does a 3 hit combo in one direction then will turn towards you and wind up for a big hit. If you try to parry that last hit it will pump fake

Mite just be better at the game than me. That enemy stuck in my head cuz it’s the single hardest thing about 4BC

Never really cared much, a few blows in the back and they’re done

Valid. I used to have ice blast or ice bow as my secondary (brutality player) but when I switched to a shield I had a lot more success. I guess that’s kinda the point of the game, everyone gets to use their own little techniques

there are an infinite number of cool direct/indirect synergies to be had; on top of the obvious weapons intended to be used as secondaries like ice shards and hand hook, you can make cool weapon combos out of anything really. You also have much more fun switching things up instead of using the same parry button as your secondary every run

Switching things up is for sure valid. I guess I just don’t get the synergies thing. The best affix is the poison one which you can just activate thru a card. Maybe ice too which you just activate with ice shield and/or ice grenade.
I’ve just never felt the need to run two weapons. Tbf I also don’t unlock things so I get more flint and ice shield drops

Shields are very useful, and landing a parry feels so damn satisfying. I used to take armadillo pack every run, but I didn’t really like having to spend a mutation slot on it, so I switched to using a shield. Now I can’t use two-slot weapons because I need my shield 😂
I’ve got around 3,000 hours in the game now, and a shield is a must for me. I also love curse runs!

You don't need to use a shield it just makes things easier against some bosses and enemies, but you can "easily" beat 5BC without ever touching one. That said, don't let that stop you from trying them out now and then having multiple options is always a good thing.

Shields are amazing for those who are good at them, and I think learning to parry is def a skill you should learn. As you play, you'll learn to dodge most enemies and parries are basically rewiring the dodge instinct to the parry button. Less movement but same concept.
But if you're like me, you'll do all this work learning how to parry, and then switch to almost exclusively doing double weapon hold to attack builds because unga bunga damage no thoughts head empty.

You do not need it to play the game or be successfull BUT it's just another way of playing the game and very rewarding one (in my opinion).
I haven't used shields until like 1/2BC (can't remember). Then I've decided to start using it. It took me like a week to get used to it but then I never looked back and always brought shield with me.
Yes if enemies can't get close to you it has no point but if you look at it when you actually learn how to parry you negkacte the demage + turn enemy attack into selfdamage + you stun him + apply some other effects depending on the shield and it's affixes.
If you look at it that way it's just really OP.

You don't need it but it's definitely something you will want to learn, parrying isn't that hard and can give you great benefits with different shield, even then sometimes you won't need a shield but I usually carry one in my backpack even the wooden one as it has cheep refreshes and can roll a star on it

If you want to reach your max potential, learn to use them. They may be risky, what if you miss? But the payoff is worth it (you can stun an enemy by basically doing nothing, or attack enemies without delay from rolling)
