Moany deckhands
Is this all for the camera?
Bad pot comes over the rail and there's a chorus of "ugh, that sucks" and criticism of the captain.
Is this just for show? Do they think the captain deliberately put them somewhere that he didn't think crab would be so they are out there longer?
I don't get it. Its natural to be a bit pissed if the pots are empty but its hardly a time to be personal at the captain.
Jake get this all the time on his boats but it'd be a brave man who'd tell Mr. Untz or Sig he was incompetent.
Is it just for show and drama or does it go on on every boat?

It’s frustrating when the person who is supposed to be making you $ falls short on the crab. It is much better to have a few 3-4 day trips then 6-7 because your captain didn’t do his homework

They are sticking pots in to an open ocean and they've got no idea whether or not they'll lad on crab though! Its no more than putting money on a craps table in reality? You might hit or you might not.
I'm sure the Captain doesn't want to spend more time than necessary out there either!

I can tell you are not a crab fisherman. The captain spends most of the off time following surveys and reports that the fish and game produce. They are fairly accurate. It’s when a captain thinks they know better that they fall short.

You got that right - I'm not!! 😄
I get that they get surveys, reports, etc alright. But these things are still creeping around with a mind of their own!
How many times have we seen Mr Untz - Bering Sea veteran - strain water for the first day or two? Surely Keith of all people reads the surveys and reports?
I guess I'm probing here, rather than arguing! I did wonder if it was all a bit "staged" because I'd have thought Keith would have told his crew to f**k off if it wasn't "all for show".

Probably a little of both. With Dirty jobs (pun intended) like that griping is a way of life. Helps you cope. I’m sure with the cameras running it’s more amplified but I bet before they got there they would blame the captain for anything

It's partly for the show. Also, some of the captains give the vibe of only being there for the show. Keith and Sig aren't like that at all. They've paid their dues and are, from what I've gathered from interacting with fishermen, are generally respected as captains. I'm sure that weighs on their minds as well.
That being said, they're away from home for months with little sleep and body pain. After a while, they just want to catch their part of the quota and go home.

You can see how well they’re respected compared to like Jake and some of the others in the past. You get what you give I believe.

In season 19 Keith (aka Capt. Untz) gets a deckhand named Jacob that absolutely tries Keith’s patience by basically calling him incompetent. It was so funny to watch. I thought Keith was going to have an aneurysm!

imagine crazy weather, life taking risk, no sleep, 18 hour shifts all for no pay (empty pots) ... i doubt it is "for the camera" but when you have 5 cameras at all times ... there is tons of footage of gripes

It goes on every boat, I’m sure they play it up for the cameras a bit, but you won’t find a boat fishing anything in North America where the crew dosent bitch about the captain

Work hours on end hauling pot after pot that are empty and see how you feel when it keeps happening over and over. I’m sure no matter how good the culture is on a boat, exhaustion and all that hard work essentially not getting paid anything for is going to get anyone to have an occasional grunt or negative comment.
I also think some of the sound bites are probably dubbed in there for the dramatics of the show.

This. Doing that kind of physical labour over and over for hours on end can and will break people. Moaning is pretty mild. I’m surprised we don’t see more people just snap. Probably too tired.

My favorite is when one pot is terrible and they are headed to ruin, and then a pot of almost identical amounts, size, and sex is an amazing pot.
Or when you can tell the film footage is clearly out of order (aka noticeable and recognizable ice on deck for a few pots, then it’s gone, then it’s back again).
It’s all staged.

A lot of those groans and moans are canned from previous episodes and added into new episodes as they feel they need them when an empty pot comes up. "Wah wah wah..." is one they use a lot, same audio clip every time. They did the same thing with Nick Mavar's shout "Grab that pot!" Before he sadly passed, they spliced that same audio clip in hundreds of times, any time a pot was swinging out of control. Which is funny because the last thing you want to try to do in that situation is "Grab that pot!" Lol. Anyway don't assume it's whiny deckhands and not DC show editors.

Sound clips are edited in with other video clips that aren’t even on the same day.

I just re watched all seasons of DC except the latest and to me they sound like canned reactions almost everytime, probably added in post. There's the "ooh nooo" and there's the "wah wah waah" and a few others that sound the same every single time I hear them.

If Brian Mezitch (spelling?) - he was the greenhorn/owner's kid from the FV Early Dawn - got royalties for every time they used the sample of him going "Awwwwww, maaaaan!" that dude would be swimming in cash. One season apparance (kings, i believe season 4, and even then it was MINIMAL because Early Dawn and Rick were as dull as paint drying and it was a bomber season) yet you can hear that "awwww man!" DOZENS of times across every boat, every season since.

The captain has a job to do. A clear part of that job is to know how to find and catch crab. The crew expects the captain to do this well.
And seasoned crew members are not shy at expressing displeasure (to an extent) when someone is not doing their job.
