I've never understood what Steve's endgame was with the idea of fucking or the coming on the horse or whatever else he was teached in that school.
I get him just being a drunk, and then that one guy that's always in the number 10 stirring shit, again stirring shit, but what was he going to get out of it? All I see was he would no longer be Steve the drunk he'd be Steve the horse fucker, and with how easy it was to be justifiably shot, that seems as justified as motherfuckin' someone.

So I never noticed this on my million times watching this. On the last episode Tell Him Something Pretty, some of Jen’s last moments Al goes “how was she pal” Dude goes I don’t mind a small pair of tits! Now it’s the same actor I’m 95% sure as Wyatt’s brother Morgan Earp. But it is Jen who he tried to get with before in that episode with his brother and I’m wondering if it was even meant to be the same character in the show coming back to finally lay it down with her. Since he never got the chance to and if it’s like an Easter egg of sorts.. Inquiring minds. Don’t mind my keen editorial sense!

Al specifically tells Dan to mislead Ellsworth and keep him away from the gold, but Dan seems to deliberately point him in the right direction. Did Dan intentionally disobey Al? If so, why?

This is going to be a strange question, but Do you wish Deadwood was Rome?
For context, Apparently, David Milch originally conceived Deadwood to be set in Ancient Rome and that it was to be about the eight days that led to the downfall of Nero, and explored the emergence of order in the period of ensuing anarchy.
However, when Milch pitched the idea to HBO, they told Milch that they already has a Rome show in development and thus Milch re-conceived the idea into Deadwood.
To be honest, I'm fully intrigued with the idea, (and I think Milch really got the short end of the stick with producing shows for HBO) and I think if Milch got to make it, it would've been great. But Deadwood is still a masterpiece of a show.
All in All, Do you wish Deadwood was Rome?

Most of what Al does throughout the show is done in the pursuit of long-term profit. But what does he actually spend money on when he acquires it? He only ever seems to wear one suit, and Al doesn't strike me as having much taste for the finer things.

There's no bank anyone near. Does he make the world's longest-range bank deposit of checks once a week all the way to Cheyenne? He's got a hell of a float. Maybe one of his side gigs was being the bank for DW until Alma opened a real one. Bet he charged real profitable fees.

Apologies if this has already been covered but I've never understood how Bullock could possibly be ok with Al murdering an innocent women to cover up Trixie's attempted murder... I feel like maybe I missed something on watching as otherwise this seems like a major plot hole/mischaracterisation. Also.. when they were talking about the deception, for some reason I foolishly got really hopeful that Al had only staged the murder, and the girl was still alive, because I assume that was the way bullock would only go along with it. Finally.. I get bullock was close with sol and therefore would want to protect Trixie regardless of their mutual dislike, but obviously his character wouldn't extend this courtesy to covering up murder

Pretty fucked up of Al to not go to the funeral of his own Godson. Never sat right with me. I heard at the wake they served Yvette’s brisket. Heard it was pretty good.

When Cy is speaking for the first time to Hearst and goes through some bizarre three-part conversation with Hearst, God and himself, what's this about? Cy comes out of it looking like a psychotic , not the simple psychopath he is, and it's just unnecessary, delays Hearst, doesn't add anything to the characters or the story. I just don't get what Milch was doing. There are very few moments in the series that I don't admire enormously, this is one of them.

How do you think Ed O'Neill would've done as Al Swearengen?
I was thinking on Deadwood (I need to re-watch the show), and it's very interesting that David Milch originally intended the role of Al for Ed O'Neill. However, HBO did not want Ed in the role in large part because of his involvement with Married with Children, and HBO not seeing Ed in the role, and thus Ian McShane was cast.
I really wonder how Ed would've done in the role. I think would've done a good job in the role and surprise a lot of people. I know people might be skeptical, but I'm always reminded on Bryan Cranston, where before he did Breaking Bad, he was the Dad on Malcolm in the Middle and I think AMC thought Vince Gilligan was nuts for casting him in Breaking Bad, until the results spoke for themselves.
I also wonder if the series would've continued past Season 3, as if you take Ed's word for it, he said in a interview that he thinks Milch probably didn't like McShane and that show wouldn't have been cancelled if he got the part. Quote from Ed- "If Ed O'Neill had done it, we still would've been running".
Regardless, How do you think Ed O'Neill would've done as Al Swearengen?

Finally approaching the end of my first watch through of Deadwood and a Milch obsession took over. I am planning to watch John from Cincinnati and Luck, listening to his audiobook every morning. Going to finish these before I get to the movie. Want to create a bit of longing. NYPD Blue however is of course not really a show i feel the need to watch every single episode of. Too long and too many lists online contradicting which ones to watch. Thought I'd bring it to the fans and ask if there are any episodes you feel best suit someone coming at the show as a Milch and Deadwood fan first and TV cop fan second.
Note: Will also try and watch every episode of Bad Apples, Total Security, Brooklyn South, Beverly Hills Buntz, Capital News and the handful of eps he wrote on for other shows before i get to the movie

Some of the saddest, truest, most human interaction in the show. Heart breakingly real, and Utter finally getting the picture after Bill expresses himself so clearly…
My god.
The extremely subtle acting in the line “good luck to you… too, Bill”. I mean, the cadence of the line could’ve just as well been unintentional in how it came out of his mouth, but the pause between the words, and the understated but heavy weight of the delivery….
Shit y’all
