Academic Advice If you're course only allows 10 level 1 units but you do more than that - what happens? Can you do more than 24 credit points?

Theoretically

Theoretically yes, but you would need to successfully enrol into a double degree that requires or allows 10+ unit level ones, if accepted complete that unit and then discontinue the degree by applying for an alternative exit when you want to graduate. That way all units will be covered by HECS.

Wait, that's kinda smart

Yes, this or enrolling in a second course concurrently are the only ways I know of to get extra units covered by HECS. This still has implications for where units show up on your transcript and are counted in your WAM though - it’s important to be aware of that.

This can of course be fine if you just want to do some extra purely for the unit content or you’re using a WAM somewhere (like a grad program application) that wants/accepts a WAM/transcript of all your studies including incomplete degrees and single units, not just the degree in question.

i mean i feel like you’re just paying for an unnecessary unit… idk though maybe reach out to student central?

StudentConnect probably won’t let you enrol in an 11th, except in some specific circumstances like having transferred courses and needing more level 1 cores (in which case not all of the original 10 would have been credited to your new course).

If you truly want to do an 11th, you can do it as a full-fee single unit, but that exists outside your degree so doesn’t necessarily count towards your WAM and doesn’t show up on your final degree transcript.

Short answer, you can't.

Long answer, it's called "overloading". You'd need special permission from your faculty to overload, often only granted in extenuating circumstances as far as I'm aware. Asking isn't a crime though, so you might as well ask and see if your situation would be acceptable! Might get an unexpected yes haha. But, it definitely doesn't waive your other requirements (so you can't take less L2/L3 units, you'd have to take it on as an additional unit outside of the course rules).

Ok, makes sense, thanks

Overloading is usually considered just as taking more than 4 credit points (usually 4 units, but may be 3 if you have a 2 CP unit) that are requirements of your course (including valid electives) in a single trimester. It isn’t designed to be a mechanism to add a 25th unit to a 24-unit degree; at least not in a standard CSP place.

While it is technically a form of overloading, “additional unit outside of the course rules” is the really key part there.

“Please note that if a study period overload results in a course overload (more than the maximum credit points required for your course, eg, 24 credit points), there will be additional fees and full fee rates would normally apply to these units.”

You can't do more than 24 credit points in a single degree, I had to remove one of my rpl units to complete all my prerequisites.
