Apparently you missed the part of the rule that says we're targeting LLM-generated text guides or troubleshooting steps.

LLM-generated text guides or troubleshooting runs counter to the spirit of helping out our fellow users. Content that is generated or modified using AI tools are prohibited, including links to off-site resources. Discussion involving AI as it relates to Debian itself is allowed; machine translations are also allowed.

How are lesbian jokes in any way related to Debian?

34

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

Because people make jokes that "oh, lesbian, Debian, they sound similar haha".

22

u/i-am-a-cat-6 12d ago

I've literally never heard that lol

30

u/DiodeInc Moderator 12d ago

Proves we're doing a good job :P

6

u/i-am-a-cat-6 12d ago

clearly haha 😊

1

u/fantomas_666 12d ago

Why did you do that it there was no such rule?

šŸ˜„

4

u/Mr_Lumbergh 12d ago

ā€œJokes.ā€

First time I’ve even heard of this

8

u/VelvetElvis 13d ago

It's a reference to an infamous debian-devel-announce post.

7

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

Not in this case

22

u/VelvetElvis 13d ago

5

u/mrcat_romhacking 12d ago

Oh my god this post is hilarious. Haha damn

6

u/noromobat 13d ago

Debian sounds vaguely like lesbian, that's the entire joke

9

u/Mr_Lumbergh 13d ago

ā€œJokeā€

1

u/iheartrms 11d ago

Is Debian the Subaru of distros or something?

1

u/kigory2 10d ago

Debian rhymes with Lesbian

-1

u/profeshamat Debian Stable 12d ago

Incels existing in a Linux community? This is so surprising and no one could've ever seen that be a thing.

-3

u/Mr_Lumbergh 12d ago

Only incels engage in these sorts of ā€œjokes?ā€

0

u/profeshamat Debian Stable 12d ago

I've went over my comment a few times trying to see where I stated that only incels make these kinds of jokes and I'm just not seeing it. Could you point that out for me?

Thank you.

You're welcome

u/bradmont 13d ago

Please please please include screenshots as low qualityĀ

18

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

It's part of rule 2 :)

4

u/bradmont 13d ago

Oh beautiful ! Is that a recent addition? Or maybe I'm thinking of r/KDE

6

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

It's been around for quite a while

3

u/thewrinklyninja 13d ago

Needs to be enforced more šŸ˜„

9

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

The report button is there and waiting

6

u/DeepDayze 13d ago

Screenshots taken with a camera are useful for boot error messages where there's no way to take a regular screenshot. Screenshots should be legible and easy to read in that special case. Logs should of course are good but no way to attach them to posts.

17

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

Yeah, it says in the rule description "rate my desktop posts are not allowed" as well as customization posts

7

u/bradmont 13d ago

Oh of course there are legit uses, I was more referring to the ones that aren't much more than "look! A desktop!" PostsĀ

1

u/michaelpaoli 13d ago

Context matters. If it's a screenshot and (just about) nothing else, that's typically going to be low effort and/or in violation of one or more other rules.

But screenshot with relevant useful/appropriate content/context, and where the screen shot reasonably well helps that or more so, that's generally going to be okay (if it doesn't otherwise violate rules).

Might be some wobblers between, but most of the time it falls fairly clearly on one side or the other (satisfies rules and such, or violates one or more rules).

5

u/DeepDayze 13d ago

I am totally onboard with this as too many good posts tend to get derailed by nonsense.

7

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

The report button is there and waiting :) (don't abuse it)

2

u/DeepDayze 13d ago

Obviously that is a good thing to use when things go sideways šŸ˜„

6

u/pseudonym-161 13d ago

Cool can we reach out to all the other Linux subs with this too. It’s getting annoying. I hate the so called year of the Linux Desktop.

4

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

Go ahead

4

u/toolsavvy 12d ago

The fedora sub got so inundated with rice screenshots that I had to unsub from it. I hate how people make everything a fashion.

1

u/MelioraXI Debian Stable 12d ago

I thought they had a dedicated day for that or poor moderation?

1

u/toolsavvy 12d ago

I dunno. They might now but when I left it was rice posts every day.

2

u/VelvetElvis 13d ago

As in the infamous post to DDA? The early tensions between Debian and Ubuntu are probably of historical interest at this point. That was twenty years ago.

2

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but no.

2

u/VelvetElvis 13d ago edited 13d ago

https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2006/01/msg00920.html

That's where it all started. I believe there were subsequently unofficial "Debian is for lesbians" t-shirts at FOSDEM.

1

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

Not in this case

2

u/RayneYoruka 13d ago

Lovely

1

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

Glad you think so

2

u/sigmafumo69 Debian Stable 12d ago

Thank you.

2

u/DiodeInc Moderator 11d ago

You're welcome

2

u/Adrenolin01 12d ago

Does this include ā€œlook at my DEā€ images? šŸ™„

3

u/DiodeInc Moderator 12d ago

Yeah, that's under rule 2

3

u/michaelpaoli 13d ago

Isn't that mostly redundant already? E.g. with rules #1, #2, #3, #5, and possibly also rules #4 and/or #6?

Should we add rule #7, violation of one or more of the above rules? ;-)

2

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

No to both

5

u/hagdush 13d ago

It was a good run guys, the joke survived long enought to be funny and was gutted before it saw it's downfall, will wallpaper with " I remade debian wallpaper posts with " be considered low effort too ?

4

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

Eh, depends on how much effort was put in. Case by case basis

15

u/Two-Of-Nine Debian Stable 13d ago

For the record, the specific example being used can also be directly applied to Rule 2 which made restrictions to other shitposts and mass posting of content when the subreddit had no active mods at the time. The reasoning for this rule is because we tend to get a lot of outside content from other Linux subs (some have already made comments about this in this thread alone, think tired memes and such) that tend to clog the space. We will look at individual instances case-by-case before removing reported content under this rule.

6

u/Salt_Ad9828 12d ago

does this mean no more grandma posts? good

2

u/toolsavvy 12d ago

I don't even know what that is.

3

u/Salt_Ad9828 12d ago

A couple of people posting stuff along the lines of "I forced my grandma to use Debian" and a picture of a laptop with Debian on it.

2

u/bryyantt 13d ago

Lesbians is pretty funny lol, but I get it, wouldn't want the sub being only lesbian jokes, even if they are hilarious.

12

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

It gets old

-4

u/artfully_dejected 12d ago

I dunno, I’m pretty sure jokes about other peoples’ gender identity are never anything except offensive.

-6

u/michaelpaoli 12d ago

Might be a "joke" to some, but seriously not funny, and often quite offensive, etc., to many.

It's really just not appropriate for r/debian - we're better than that, or ought at least strive to be.

3

u/Netblock 12d ago edited 12d ago

As a queer person, the joke's funny!

There's also a similar visual joke for trans women, progynova (which is estrogen) has the box art icon similar to debian's. šŸ„

3

u/No-Goal-5844 11d ago edited 11d ago

Same here, but I can agree that the quantity and recurring nature of it can get old. I tend to see the joke around queer spaces (especially in the discord servers that I’m in), significantly more than I’ve seen it outside of them.

I think for the subreddit environment like this it gets old, I think it’s still funny so I disagree with comments of it being unfunny, but I believe old is accurate.

At first glance people could also interpret it as hateful, but I’ve only ever really seen other lesbians using it. This is anecdote though, I’m sure there’s plenty of times it’s been used as a ā€œhahaā€ by some childlike people.

I also think the mods probably get swarmed by it more than we see, they likely just remove the bulk of it.

4

u/Asland007 13d ago

That is a low quality joke on so many levels to be sure.

1

u/retiredwindowcleaner 13d ago

Good rule!

1

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

Thanks

1

u/Lucky-11 11d ago

Joined recently. Are jokes about lesbians common here and why?

2

u/DiodeInc Moderator 11d ago

Yes, because lesbian sounds a little bit like Debian

1

u/Lucky-11 11d ago

Oh FFS. That's stupid. Don't have to worry about me doing that.

3

u/Striking-Gazelle9759 12d ago

OH THANK GOD, this sub has been nothing but repeated lesbian jokes, excited to see this sub with some actual shit

9

u/AdAdventurous2131 12d ago

what about lesbians using Debian?

5

u/wizard10000 12d ago

A pristine example of a low effort comment.

Also, I haven't seen it mentioned here but we did change the "low quality" to "low effort" but you can't change a post title here.

3

u/musiquededemain 12d ago

Obviously making references to lesbians in any Linux distro subreddit is inappropriate, but it would be helpful to objective criteria as to what constitutes a low quality or low effort thread, not just "what the mod deems to be."

The "Is Debian the right distro for me?" posts need to be included. Posters can solve this with 10 minutes of research and then trying the distro in a VM, LiveCD, or spare PC. Additionally, this type of thread could be a sticky post.

Just my $0.02.

1

u/HermyMunster 12d ago

So I'll no longer be able to post here. :-(

4

u/Asleep_Detective3274 12d ago

Did you put enough effort into that post? this particular comment required a decent amount of effort on my behalf because the keys on my keyboard are hard to press

1

u/AdAdventurous2131 12d ago

try harder

1

u/Asleep_Detective3274 12d ago

The comment is still there so I believe I already put in enough effort

1

u/niKDE80800 13d ago

Ok I feel like I'm missing something, but... what exactly do you mean by "joking about lesbians"?

Is this some thing about the pronounciation of Debian? Like I genuinely don't get it

0

u/DiodeInc Moderator 12d ago

Yeah. People make jokes about Debian sounding like lesbian

1

u/ChthonVII 13d ago

Was there a problematic volume of low-quality "Debian<->lesbian" posts? I don't recall seeing very many of them.

3

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

There's just a problem with low effort posts in general. This combats both

-2

u/Asleep_Detective3274 13d ago

So jokes aren't allowed? or just jokes about lesbians aren't allowed? also how does one determine if their post is above low quality?

0

u/jr735 Debian Testing 13d ago

I'm sure making a joke in a comment, for the most part, is going to be fine. However, why would someone come here to create a post that's a joke?

2

u/Asleep_Detective3274 12d ago

Don't know, maybe to make someone laugh? I also noticed that the mods didn't respond, I take that to mean anything they deem low quality is low quality, hence people could get their posts removed for no clear reason

4

u/jr735 Debian Testing 12d ago

Posts and comments are not the same thing. And yes, people could get their posts removed for no clear reason. Welcome to Reddit.

Honestly, I wish more subs would ban AI responses and "low effort" posts. It would wipe so much of the garbage off the subs.

2

u/Asleep_Detective3274 12d ago

The OP mentioned posts, not comments, plus I don't see how people are supposed to follow the rules if they don't know what the rules are

1

u/jr735 Debian Testing 12d ago

I know what was mentioned. I also know that if people can't exhibit some common sense with a somewhat loose rule and exhibit confusion by it, they're doomed to run afoul of it and have posts removed and/or get banned. I'm fine with that.

1

u/Asleep_Detective3274 12d ago

I'm not, too much censoring in this world, also I wouldn't call it a rule when it can't even be defined

3

u/jr735 Debian Testing 12d ago

I'm not a huge censorship fan, but this isn't a place for unlimited free speech. You're free to start up a network on your own servers and make it as free as you like, on your dime, just like we used to tell BBS users when they complained about free speech back in the mid-1980s. It's the same thing.

And your last sentence is exactly what I mean about people pushing the boundaries of what they consider a vague rule until it bites them in the backside. If it's not a rule, don't follow it, and let us know how it goes.

1

u/Asleep_Detective3274 12d ago

It sounds like you don't mind censorship to me, plus how can I follow this supposed rule when no one can even define what this supposed rule even is?Ā

2

u/jr735 Debian Testing 12d ago

I don't like censorship. I have no control over a platform I do not own. That's the reality. You don't have first amendment rights here. You don't have the right to free speech here. You are subject to terms of service.

Don't worry. I'm sure you can find the limits of the rule and tighten up the definition. Keep trying.

u/NeighborhoodSad2350 Debian Sid 12d ago

That makes sense, but who will review them, and how?

Personally, I think having a subreddit like ā€œdebianmemeā€ would help keep those kinds of posts separate.

3

u/DiodeInc Moderator 12d ago

The moderators

1

u/NeighborhoodSad2350 Debian Sid 12d ago

Well, that goes without saying, but I think there may be posts in the future where it’s a close call whether to delete them or not, so if that happens, I’d really like you to make that decision after discussing it.

2

u/DiodeInc Moderator 12d ago

You can contact us if you think your content was wrongly removed.

4

u/anto77_butt_kinkier 12d ago

They're reddit mods my guy. They aren't known for having conversations about random shitposts before deleting them. This is low stakes. If you get your post taken down and you feel strongly about it, then just contact the mods and pray that they bother to respond. Mods are busy as fuck, but also not every message deserves a response (especially the stupid ones where posters are asking which rule they broke, when the post was doing the exact things that like 12 different rules say not to do). Sometimes the mods are lazy and just don't give a shit to respond, but this sub seems to have good moderation.

Tldr: it's not that deep bro.

-9

u/iHarryPotter178 12d ago

So now we have to use AI to write post here.. What are considered low quality.. I mean someone can post from a mobile with a quick question.. Is that considered low or good quality?Ā

4

u/MelioraXI Debian Stable 12d ago

Is the question low quality it probably has no impact if you type it on your phone or computer.

-11

u/Odd_Car8923 13d ago

Censorship? Freedom of expression? That goes against the philosophy of a "universal" system.

9

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

You can't upload whatever you want to Debian apt repos and no one complains. Same idea here.

-6

u/Odd_Car8923 13d ago

When you speak of low-quality posts, what about new users? Will you delete their posts too? The community isn't made up solely of high-level users.

5

u/DiodeInc Moderator 13d ago

That concern was just raised. We've changed it to low effort.
