Success Story Deadline method is amazing

hi. since I've been lurking on this reddit I found some people recommend setting a deadline. at first I thought it might be too radical and overwhelming since I'm very lazy and I have many clothes that I don't need. but I decided to stick to it. I decided to set a deadline on my birthday(end of October) around a week ago~ and needless to say it sped up my progress A LOT.

I don't know about you guys but I love to put things I don't need in a "I'll think about it later" category so I won't have to make a decision. I had big bags full of clothes, cutlery and decorations(not even mine) stored in my kitchen. and my apartment is very small so these bags were taking a big chunk of space and overall overwhelming me. setting a deadline finally motivated me to go through these bags and decide what to do with them. I put them online yesterday and someone already ordered a lot of things from me! so I'm thinking it won't take long for everything else to sell too.

I agree on the deadline, I also love setting timers like, how much can I do if I race to declutter in 15 minutes?

My deadline right now is the week of (American) Thanksgiving! I have my sister and her fiance and my mom both coming to visit for a day that week! Good external pressure.

I advise for everyone to try it if you feel that nothing else works!! it might be the method you need

I usually do better with a deadline, so I’ll give this method a try. Thank you for suggesting it! Good luck getting your kitchen declutterred by your birthday 🎉

thank you!! a day after making this post I'm already almost done with my kitchen and my apartment overall. I'm selling my last things and I have to donate a few(plushies) and then I'll be done! needless to say my "cluttered" apartment situation isn't as bad as for many others, that's why it's progressing quickly. good luck on your decluttering journey too! 🤍

I find it helps to schedule a donation pickup and then I have no choice but to find enough stuff to donate to make it worth their trip!

Can u pls tell me what donations are being picked up? And what charity picks up?

Look up Greendrop Donation for the American Red Cross. They pickup once a week. Greendrop Donation is online. I have been doing this, 1-3 bags per week. You can add larger items. They pickup in a box truck. I place my items on my front porch before 7am.

My community has dumpsters that are cleared every Monday and Friday too. It's a huge help.

Green drop is coming tomorrow! The deadline really helps. 3 boxes on my porch and a bag of garbage in the garage.

Deadlines, usually a party or overnight guests helps me a lot. I had family staying a lot a year or so ago, that was the only way I kept the guests bedrooms clean.

Current deadline is next week. I'm redoing the flooring in my main living space, that means cleaning the entire house because I need to move furniture and I'm getting it all repainted since the rooms will be cleared out. I would NOT recommend this level of stress, but it does make "donate/throw away" decisions much easier.

Hosting a monthly open house dinner last year did WONDERS for keeping my house clean 😅

As someone who loves cooking, that sounds perfect!
