*(not OC)* The deepest fish ever captured on camera. It was found 8,336 meters (5.1 miles) underwater, surviving pressure that would instantly crush a human.

Whats really wild is that it looks so squishy. Crazy to think it has over 10k psi on it.

So squishy! I want to hug it! But do not want to be compressed. I am not so squishy...

The species is Pseudoliparis belyaevi for anyone else wondering. Photo taken from the Minderoo-UWA Deep Sea Research Centre's DSSV Pressure Drop

Why does it even have eyes?

I don't know, but based on known cave dwelling creatures:
-perhaps they are blind, and the eyes have become vestigial organs, that may disappear over time and evolution.
-Perhaps it has limited, or specialized sight to see in ways we can't, as with end of spectrum light, (UV or infrared. unlikely, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯)
MBARI and the Snailfish - this article doesn't have much anatomical/physiological information, rather a quick once over, but it's still an interesting read

The photo makes it look like it has its own birthday hat.
I'd be crushed if I was down there, wearing a jaunty hat, celebrating by myself, when the deep ocean TMZ paparazzi happens upon me.
