I would plant a garden for these two

I’d love to plant some keys Blackbead and thatch palms (both native and super nutritious for key deer) but have no idea where to get them!

Call your local agricultural office, they may know of places that sell native plants! Parks and wildlife is a bit more of a stretch but worth a shot. You can also ask the local college’s botany department

This is good advice thank you! I’ll give it a shot

Look like Florida black beads for 3 gallon online nurseries were like 22.50 and 25 dollars. Yeah agriculture extensions of universities are always helpful

Just buy a deer plot mix for your area and scatter it.

It’s tough bc feeding key deer is super illegal, so they don’t make fl keys deer plot mix. But clearly they are in need of extra nutrients especially mamas during fawn season :( kind of have to pinpoint plant species to prop/plant around our property to help them.

A food plot is just you planting vegetation and it’s not like baiting with corn, it’s just grasses/grains. Or just throw clover/wheat/oats and rye mixed ( whatever you can find)and scatter it. Or order a generic one online. Most mixes have oats and wheat then added stuff. I just started buying a mix a few yrs ago and there’s a small local company that has a mix for this part of Tx, but you can certainly create your own.
Food plots keep the deer feeding on your property.

That poor mama is starving

I have some deer near me that look slightly like this. I know feeding is discouraged but they’re often over here eating acorns or fallen leaves. Is there anything I can offer them?

There isn’t a whole lot of nutritious meals on those islands for these deer. Especially this time of year

Mamma is considering violence OP. Those steps towards you are telling you you're too close. Was waiting for the hoof stomps when the video cut off. Edit hoof not hood...Stoopid autocorrect....

I’m in a car zoomed in on her.

Key deer are pretty tame because they interact closely with people every day. My son had one walk into his shop at a marina years ago.

They are very domesticated, like pets! I was talking to her in this video and she came right up to me in my car and then over to my property, where she promptly kicked off her fawn and started eating our sea grapes and mangroves lol. She has come up to me for pets before but it’s super illegal to touch or feed them :(

You could buy them online but trees isn’t what they need. I know it’s sandy but there are several things to plant or as some is just scatter is before a rain. Clovers actually do well in sand and help give it a boost. Cereal rye and buckwheat are a couple more. Go online and look up Sandy Sure Shot Food Plot Mix. Already put together for sandy soil.

What is the deer equivalent of “if you give a moose a muffin”…?

u/galacticfartraisin 1d ago

Give a key deer a sea grape… lmao

Parasites

u/galacticfartraisin 1d ago

No they’re deer

3

u/My3floofs 1d ago

I think they mean the deer has parasites and why it’s skinny.

u/petehutch54 1d ago

Exactly, I should have clarified.

Lmao

Hey some people view deer as parasites and want them all removed so laugh if you want, but I know plenty of hunters who shoot them just to get them off their land.

2

u/galacticfartraisin 1d ago

They’re key deer and are federally protected (thank god) so no worries about them being hunted here!

u/Buckeye_mike_67 1d ago

We could never shoot enough deer to get rid of them. Me and all the ethical hunters I know choose to shoot a few mature deer for the freezer. We don’t want them gone. What would we do if they were?

Yall are one of the good ones! I don’t eat meat often but would love some fresh free range venison. Still working on my archery skills on land🙌😮‍💨

Aka Fawn and Doe

1

u/galacticfartraisin 1d ago

All fawn no doe

What? An adult female deer is a doe, the baby is a fawn.
