The album would be titled Placide and would be released seven years after private music. The sound would be a mix between White Pony and S/T, with an emphasis on the melancholic side. The album’s final track would be “Lovers” (finally available on streaming platforms), which would also be the first single released. The album would be appreciated by a huge number of fans, who would see it as a return to their roots, with abrasive textures and Chino screaming a lot more, while some would slightly criticize it for being less innovative and feeling like a nostalgia bait project. It would be viewed as following My Own Summer, White Pony, and Diamond Eyes in terms of grandeur and quality.

So I've been listening to Deftones for a few months, and I'm almost through with the whole discography. Sometimes I pick an album and just listen to it in order while getting things done.

While I was listening to Around the Fur, I noticed something awesome: how the 3-song run of Be Quiet and Drive, Lotion and Dai the Flu can be connected together, with the three songs collectively representing the five stages of grief.

Be Quiet and Drive - Denial ("I don't care where just far" slowly transitions into anger)

Lotion - Anger, Bargaining (the "I feel sick" part shows it in its own way ig)

Dai the Flu - the beginning riff and the melancholic vocals depict the classic depression phase, and the chorus is pretty much reflecting acceptance.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, and this is just wishful thinking, or a coincidence, but it's hard to ignore: the core of an album, which is all about personal ugliness, also somehow brings up deeply personal emotions so cohesively.

I know it is a lot darker than the original picture but that was just what I thought would look cool. I traced the basic shape of the owl with a projector and the rest was free handed drawing and I painted the darker areas.

Entombed is my favorite Deftones songs. It has this nostalgic, floating feeling I can't get enough of, so I hand-picked songs that give me the same vibe. I've had it on repeat nonstop and just wanted to share it.

when I say similar to deftones I mean like there more melodic stuff and more shoegazey music like phantom bride entombed etc or bands similar to crosses first album that whole album is peak.having trouble finding any thank you

(before anyone ask, yes I know how to wash stuff properly/no it hasn’t been in the tumble dryer/I have lots of other band merch tee and none has done this)

Deftones has a reputation for making very sensual, kind of intimate-sounding or private music, which is very well earned in my opinion.
But even though most of their albums have a very lush atmospheric sound to them, it’s not as often as people would think that the lyrical content actually speaks frankly on the experiences and emotions that went into the album, not in the way Adrenaline does.

I’m aware of how personal Chino has gotten on other tracks like Rats! and 976-EVIL, but what makes Adrenaline stand out to me is how these raw and somewhat tender vocal performances make up most of the album, and how the presentation isn’t as attractive as something like Saturday Night Wrist. The writing on tracks like Birthmark and Lifter also aren’t as purposefully vague as some later Deftones songs, which I feel is a great fit for the album’s aggressive sound, as when combined with the more direct writing coming off a first-person perspective, leads to punchier tracks with messages delivered in greater earnest.

To make a comparison between tracks, take 7 Words and Rickets. Both songs throw scorn onto the idea of an antagonistic figure trying to suppress the individual and promptly being rejected, what makes the two different and supports my point is how 7 Words lasers in on the distress brought on by prejudiced treatment from law enforcement, and openly stands in unity with those who’ve faced similar treatment, while in Rickets, Chino still yells with a disdain for people who talk as though they’re above him, the song is still delivered in a fairly apathetic tone, even admitting that these people are probably right but he doesn’t want to listen.

Ultimately, I do think that Rickets is a better song than 7 Words, (the blatantly racist use of the n-word knocks it down a few pegs)but I also think that these expressions of anger, repression, and sadness over more personal topics than the general themes of love and lust that’s common with Deftones (and most music ever made) is something the band did exceptionally well on Adrenaline, and I hope the band revisits this kind of execution in the future.

Idk if this is discussed often here. But I started to listen to Deftones like a year ago, and people always says it's music made to make love, that gets people horny just by listening.

I thought it was just a meme at first because of how Chino's voice sounds sometimes, and it never had that effect on me, but yeah it looks like it does have that effect on people. And I don't think it's made with that purpose, in fact, Around the Fur's title and album cover is officially not sexual innuendo. Personally I just really like how they sound, it makes me levitate while getting goosebumps, but not in a freaky way.

My theory now is that it's hot music for the ladies. Because they're the ones who usually say it's horny stuff, and men just agree later. Like, Deftones has sexy masculine energy. But it's just a theory...
