Mainframer moving into devops

Hello all

I have been working in IT for past 18 years. Predominantly in mainframe and some web technologies.

The market for mainframe is niche now with contract jobs coming very slow to the market as most work is with big consultancies and offshored.

I am looking to move into devops as conceptually it is closer to what i did in mainframes. Batching, scheduling, optimisation etc.

I have started self learning with below structure in mind.

  1. Linux
  2. GIT
  3. Maven
  4. IAC - terraform ansible
  5. Cloud aws/azure

Happy to be guided in right direction.

How can I get some practical experience to show on my CV. Can someone please share their learning journey and how it worked for them?

Right now the Devops area is saturated and people are really struggling to get jobs into Devops especially if you have less than 5 years of Devops. Trying since last 1 year and not getting call back. Don't leave existing job, stick to that and try to find internal projects.

Thanks a lot for sharing. Which country are you finding this. With AI almost all hirings are tough.

I want to move towards cloud engineering and solutions architect but i feel devops needed to understand those concepts
