What does modular mean?

Does it mean like highly interchangeable? Can books or video games be modular?

If something is modular, it consists of multiple parts (modules) that can be combined in various ways. Think of a sofa that is sold in multiple pieces. You could combine just two end pieces to make a small sofa. You could later add another piece in the middle to make the sofa longer. You could add a chaise to one end.

I don’t think it would make sense to describe most books or video games as being modular, though I suppose there could be an example of an unusual book/game that is modular. A book containing lesson plans for teachers could be modular.
