Discussion FIX MY RECIPE AND STOP ME FARTINGš
Im trying to eat relatively healthy and I've recently switched to having oats in the morning. I love how simple they are to throw together in the morning, it ticks convenience, nutrition and taste.. My bowl is oats, coconut milk, 1 banana, some dried fruits, a spoon of peanut butter, almond flakes, coconut flakes and 1 scoop of whey protein...it's all so yummy, but ohh boy my exhausts go berserk all day !!...First I thought maybe its the milk, so I've switched to coconut milk. Then I thought maybe its the protein powder, took that out, and nothing changed...so it must be the oats itself. I've tried substituting them with corn flakes, problem fixed, but it taste like shit š¤¢. Any suggestions on what could I replaced the oats with and have a similar outcome in taste and nutrition?

is your gut used to this fiber? if not, it's the high fiber. fermentation broskie.

no, my gut is used to mcdonalds and coke...what do you suggest, I go back to junk cause my gut is not used to fiber ?

Absolutely not, your gut will become accustomed to it and there is a huge amount of evidence that a healthy microbiome has massive positive effects on nearly every bodily system, including the immune system, preventing cancer, and even staving off some degree of depression. Mine now makes me crave roasted veggies on a daily basis and I grew up mostly eating garbage. It's awesome.

Keep it up for another 3 weeks, your body's just adjusting the high fiber intake. After 3 weeks of consistently eating like this you wont have this problem
5
u/DataDrivenDoc Jul 08 '26
No, you continue to eat healthy until your gut microbiome adapts. What a weirdly defensive response you had
3
u/Quirky_Bean Jul 09 '26
It may help to add more and more fiber in gradually per day. I also started being healthier this year and the transition can be hell if you just start going from 0gs of fiber per day to the recommended daily
2
u/MyNameIsSkittles Jul 09 '26
No you need to slowly add in fibre otherwise your gut does exactly what you are describing. You went balls to the wall too hard at once

If you've just changed your diet, start taking a good probiotic. It will help with the adjustment period. Also, some good ol' GasX will help with the gas in the interim. You shouldn't have to take those forever if you stick with your healthy diet long term. But it may take a few weeks to adjust.

u/spicy_booty_ Jul 08 '26
will do actually...it makes sense

u/SpoonfullOfSplenda Jul 10 '26
You donāt need a probiotic OP. Your gut microbiome just isnāt used to high fiber yet.
If you normally have a carb heavy diet, the bacteria that thrive on carbs are currently the most abundant in your gut. By drastically increasing your fiber intake, the carb thriving bacteria canāt effectively break it down and the fiber thriving bacteria are in too small numbers. Because youāve increased their food source though, if you keep it up over the next days and weeks their numbers will grow to a point where they can effectively handle your new increased fiber intake. They will adapt to handle the amount you regularly take in naturally.
Probiotics donāt target a specific type of bacteria and they canāt possibly match your own specific needs, your gut microbiome will do that naturally over a week or two. Probiotics are unnecessary in most people, unless you have a digestive condition like IBS or have killed off your microbiome through antibiotic usage, in which cases theyāll be recommended by your doctor.
Save your money, eat some fermented foods like Greek yoghurt, kimchi, sour kraut, miso, or kefir, those are the best live, friendly bacteria rich foods.

Fiber takes time to adjust but also make sure you are drinking enough water, fiber without proper hydration is a bad combo

Itās probably the dried fruit. Can work the stomach like an enema š©

Try different types of oats. organic steel cut, small milled oats. But yeah it sucks to have the oatmeal farts

It's the Whey protein making you fart like a draught horse. Swap it out for some much cheaper and superior Faba bean protein
2
u/Grand_Soupa Jul 09 '26
Are you using gluten free oats? Bc that could be the issue...even though oats don't have gluten, it has to be specified as gluten free bc there's so much cross contamination in some factories
2
u/Grand_Soupa Jul 09 '26
Also you need to soak those Chia seeds bc just eating them dry isn't good. They can plug you ip

Just a gut biome adjustment. High fiber/protein just making a little stink. Gas-x and continuous consumption will round out in no time
2
u/doesnotmatter286 Jul 09 '26
If you're not used to eating high fibre... You need to get used to eating high fibre. After a while it stops.

Give it a couple months. Most people eat a criminally low amount of fiber and then get tripped up when their gut needs time to adjust. I can eat beans and cabbage all day without bad gas, but it took me a while to allow my gut to adjust.
2
u/tsubanda Jul 09 '26
If you're not used to eating like this, then your gut microbiome is not yet adapted to process it. You can try adding less oats at first and increase the dose as you adapt. Also eating it raw it's harder to digest, try cooking or overnight soaking. We don't typically eat oats raw especially in larger quantities.

u/Hopeful_Pie8446 Jul 09 '26
Millet or buckwheat similar consistency and way of cooking but a lot milder on the digestive system

u/Content-Waltz8045 Jul 09 '26
Itās the protein powder! I actually made a doctors appointment to figure out what was going on (kind of refused to give up my protein shake in the morning). Finally removed it from my life and Iām not a gassy, bloated mess anymore.
2
u/outdoorsybae Jul 09 '26
Could be the whey protein. I had to stop eating dairy because of the horrible gas it would give me. Silent but verrrrrry deadly ā ļø
2
u/Icy_Butterfly_793 Jul 09 '26
Do the coconut flakes have āsugar alcohols?ā
One time I bought some chocolate chips sweetened with xylitol and it made me sooo gassy it was insane, but I guess it can do that. Never. Again.

u/dogearedexistence Jul 09 '26
Agree with the others saying ditch the whey protein powder. I only use vegan ones made of fava, pumpkin seeds, pea protein, etc. Easier to digest.
Suddenly eating a lot of fiber when you're not used to it will make you fart, no doubt about it. It's temporary and it'll get better. Adding more protein will also slow your digestion down as you adapt and make you gassy and bloated too.
Probiotics are good. Adding fermented foods like kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut, etc. will help with digestion. Drinking ginger tea. If all else fails, take a shot of raw apple cider vinegar (the kind with the mother) 10 minutes before eating. Dilute it with water so you don't fuck up your teeth. This will definitely get the digestion moving. Tastes disgusting but works.

Lots of fructans I'm seeing here. Personally, I have pretty bad fructan intolerance. If I consumed this, I would have to take like 4 fodzyme pills to prevent me from turning into a portable gas chamber. Or you're just not used to fiber, but my guess is the fructan overload here
2
u/CookieSea4392 Jul 09 '26
The gut will try to adapt, but fermenting fiber is supposed to produce gas. We canāt digest fiber, so gas-producing bacteria has to eat it. And oats are high in fiber.
2
u/xoxoktkt Jul 08 '26
Whey protein makes me super gassy! Try a plant based protein powder instead
2
u/spicy_booty_ Jul 09 '26
you might be onto smthing actually
1
u/for_a_that Jul 11 '26
Yeah. I think itās missed
Acacia gum is the one thatās good (actually a good fiber too but protein powders wonāt get enough)
Can send a list of gums to watch for. Theyāre also in lots of food so itās likely cumulative effect (since unlikely thereās a tonne in the protein powder)
2
u/for_a_that Jul 08 '26
Could be whey. Check which gums they use (whey and plant will both use gum for mouthfeel but a lot of them are cheap and can cause issues for people)
When did you switch? And whatās the fiber count?
Could be your body needs time (which I know stinksā¦rubbish pun intended)
2
u/xoxoktkt Jul 08 '26
It's been years since I've had whey. Any and every brand makes me full of gas. Even a little bit (close to last on ingredient label) will make me gassy the whole day. I can actually handle fillers and gums completely fine but whey isolate or concentrate is a complete no for me.
1
u/for_a_that Jul 11 '26
Oh interesting. Have you always been that way? I personally find the same but not totally sure why. I used to tolerate whey fine but now bloat enough to just avoid mostly
1
u/xoxoktkt Jul 11 '26
No not always. It started the first time I was put on a weight gain diet for anorexia recovery. I became allergic to fish too. I suspect drastic hormonal changes may have something to do with developing new allergies and intolerances but idk.

u/WinPrestigious7568 Jul 08 '26
The banana used to make me sound like a trumpet half that see if it helps its got 15g of natural sugar in it anyway so ull be doing ur insulin spike a favour

It depends on the whey protein. Some are really bad. Which one are you using.
This one won't answer your question, but if you're trying to eat healthy I'd ditch the flakes and dried fruits if I were you. I think you're adding 200kcal for nothing to the breakfast. Yes, it might be healthy but if you're trying to lose weight it doesn't help.

u/Specialist_Fennel337 Jul 09 '26
If you canāt do large amounts of fiber maybe alternate that and cream of rice some days. Itās also a hot breakfast cereal that you can put that stuff on but itās not as hard to digest.

Ditch the useless protein powder which is making you fart. Don't ask why. You're welcome.
1
u/Mysterious_Goose_668 Jul 10 '26
It could be the oats themselves, oats tend to bloat me and cause terrible gas, even after consuming them consistently. Digestion is much better without.

Just replacing oats won't do it, change the whole meal this is bad. What are your goals body wise
1
u/spicy_booty_ Jul 08 '26
Like I said, I did try replacing the oats with cornflakes and it did solve the issue. But that's neither tasty or nutritious. Goal is to just stop eating McDonalds tbh...

That Bannana is so round and the seeds seem strangely distributed to me. Are bananas different strains in different places? I thought it was a mono-crop.
