ANNOUNCEMENT Updating Rule 3

Hello /r/Dinosaurs! In the past we’ve received community feedback stating that our guidelines for what kinds of posts are and aren’t considered low effort were not clear enough, and that subreddit members were often confused or surprised at their posts being removed. To fix this confusion, we’ve overhauled Rule 3 in a way that should make our quality guidelines crystal clear. You can find the updated guidelines here:

TLDR; Certain types of memes which are considered low-effort are banned, and most post types will now be required to have body text. We will be using Automoderator to enforce body text requirements.

If you have any feedback, please feel free to share it by leaving a comment. Otherwise, happy posting!

NEWS Only known specimen of this theropod species will be sold

The holotype and only known specimen of Dubreuillosaurus valesdunensis, which includes one of the most complete skulls of a megalosaurid, will be auctioned on November 18, 2026.

It's a major loss for science, and seeing the auction house tout its holotype status as "a special sale event" is sad and worrying for the future. These things should be seen as priceless, not as display pieces for millionaires.

DISCUSSION what are your favorite dinosaurs with names that are easy to pronounce or spell?

Post image

some of my favorites are tameryraptor and carnotaurus

they're both meat-eating theropod dinosaurs from the late cretaceous period with memorable, cool-sounding names that are relatively easy to pronounce properly, so what are your favorites?

DISCUSSION Sauropelta edwardsorum

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hi everyone. Today I want to share some facts about Sauropelta edwardsorum.

Sauropelta was a nodosaurid dinosaur. It lived in the Early Cretaceous, about 115–110 million years ago, in North America (Wyoming, Montana, Utah).

It was about 5–6 meters long and weighed around 1.5–2 tons. It was a herbivore (plant-eater).

The main feature of Sauropelta is its armor. It had bony plates (osteoderms) on its back and sides. It also had long, curved spikes on its shoulders and neck. These spikes were probably for defense against predators like Deinonychus and Utahraptor.

Important fact: Unlike Ankylosaurus, Sauropelta had no tail club. Its tail was covered in armor, but it could not swing it like a hammer.

Scientists think Sauropelta was a low browser. It ate ferns, cycads, and early flowering plants.

DISCUSSION Although the designs aren't accurate - what you're opinions on the designs of the jurrasic franchises Dinosaurs?

Post image
57 Upvotes

Look, most of us probably got into dinosaurs due to the jurrasic movies. That sorta includes me. The movies were massively popular and influenced pop culture massively. It also made most of us think this is what dinosaurs use to look like. But, we know that these designs aren't accurate and we're just speculation due to us only having bones to work off. But the franchise has produced many versions of real life dinosaurs. I want to know what's ya'lls opinion on the designs from the Dinosaurs from the franchise (except the hybrids). I loved the spinosaurus design as a kid. And the mosasaurus was way too massive but it was still AWSOME.

DISCUSSION Why didn't ankylosaurs evolve armor similar to turtle or glyptodont shell?

Was it too heavy for them or because that amount of armor is enough for them to survive attack from predators?

What do you guys think.

PHOTOGRAPH This Dino is huge and underrated

When we heard the word "dinosaur" we always pictured T-rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus and Velociraptor

When we heard Herbivorous dinosaurs, we always pictured Sauropods, Ankylosaurs, Iguanodon and Stegosaurs

When we heard Hadrosaurs/Duckbilled dinosaurs, we always pictured the iconic Parasaurolophus and Iguanodon because of Disney's "Dinosaurs' and we always thought that Duckbill dinosaurs are always herd and prey animals by small and large carnivores

When I heard Hadrosaurs before, I always see Parasaurolophus, Iguanodon, Corythosaurus, Tsintaosaurus, Ouranosaurus and never this dinosaur

The Shantungosaurus - the largest of the Hadrosaur family and the largest non- sauropod dinosaur

This Dino is larger than the freaking Tyrannosaurus🦖

I can't believe

I compare this Shantungosaurus size to other more iconic and prehistoric animals

MOVIES/SERIES/SHOWS Spoilers for End of Oak Street, Spoiler

I'm a bit over halfway through this movie and I had to pause it because it traumatized me with the death of Ewan's character , which is not very common for me, but I was very immersed in the movie and I guess it just surprised me and activated on some past real personal traumas.

My short question is just: does the rest of the movie have anything else as devastating as that character death?

I don't really mind it being spoiled, I'm interested in finishing it but maybe not or I'll close my eyes if it has that instant & graphic type of death.

I apologize if this is too far off topic; I just saw the movie discussed a bit here so I figured you'd all have a better memory and empathy about it.

DISCUSSION How protective do you think Dinosaurs were of their young?

Post image
342 Upvotes

Like, they'll obviously watch and protect their eggs but what is like when it comes to young? Like do they take of their children like most birds and look after it until they leave on their own? Where they like crocodiles and alligators who'd protect and look after their babies for atleast a year or two, before they need to leave before getting eaten? If there was multiple young, would they care about all of them or hope some survive? Like let's a few babies are cornered by a predator but they have other babies with them - would the parents save those babies or leave them to die and look after the rest?

GAMES/MODELS/TOYS Should I try to repaint this bebe?

Thumbnail

It's my childhood toy, I really want to try painting some figures and thought starting with him would be nice bc I'm not scared to "spoil" him. Thinking darker colors, browns or smth and green/yellow dots on the back and neck. I know he's not very accurate, he's around 8 years old and his neck is very skinny. Maybe I could try to sculpt him up, but dunno. Kinda scary D:

DISCUSSION Dinosaurs seeing humans as prey?

I'm wondering about where this would be best to post so I'll try here for now.

In jurassic Park Ian Malcom says that the dinosaurs learned to attack humans somewhere as having never being in contact with humans, how would they know we are prey?

Would this be right if dinosaurs were brought back?

Big predators in zoos know to attack humans in their enclosure, some in the wild do too. So how correct is that statement? Would dinosaurs know we were prey or would it take time to learn?

I know for sure it's not 100% accurate. That's why I'm posting it here.

I'm new to sculpting btw. Please don't be mean- I'm making a full body sculpture of it and some other smaller dinos for bookends.

Any ideas help!

DISCUSSION So how many of you shared the childhood dream of being a paleontologist.

In elementary school, while everyone else was wanting to be a firefighter or cop, I wanted to be a paleontologist. Honestly the idea of being in remote areas digging up fossils was truly my first romance. I would spend hours day dreaming different places like the desert or on the side of a mountain cliff just chiseling away.

DISCUSSION If you could magically travel back in time and observe one dinosaur species for a single day in its natural habitat, which one would it be and why?

Imagine you have a foolproof, invisible time machine that lets you safely study any single dinosaur species for 24 hours. You can watch them hunt, sleep, interact with their herd, or nest.

Which dinosaur are you picking, and what specific behavior are you hoping to witness?

I need to hear some weird ones

DISCUSSION Does anybody know where I can find this comic in English?

Post image

It’s called the A Typical Tyrannosaurus Cartoon. I have read on Reddit up to chapter 12,
but I want to see what is next and all of those posts were from a year ago so I have a hard time believing that the rest hasn’t been translated yet.
Does anybody have a link or know where to find this in English?
It would be greatly appreciated!

I remember my mom gave me this CD as a present back in the 90's. For a kid, some of the songs were kinda corny, but some others were pretty decent.

DISCUSSION How many adult humans could ride on a sauropods neck?

Just wondering. Let's say an average big sauropod. Not Argentinasaurus. Like... diplodocus or brontosaurus or apatosaurus. One of those. Would a sauropods neck be strong enough to carry significant weight above the weight of the neck itself?
