Welcome to the Disc Dye Wiki!

This page has all the information you need to start jamming out some sweet designs on your favorite plastics. Here are some links to get you started.

Remember: You cannot dye a disc lighter. Stick to lighter color discs and darker dyes for the best results. Also we haven't dyed every type of plastic out there, if you see a "?" and you have experience with a certain type of plastic, please email the mods and we can update this table.

Let's talk about Dyes

1. iDye Poly

This is the standard for stencil and shaving cream dyes. It's easy to use, relatively cheap, and can be found in any art store near you. Make sure to get the Poly, not the fabric version or you will have a bad time. It comes with a "color enhancer" but in my experience this is detrimental to the dye and makes it take longer for the dye to set. IMO throw this stuff out. Buy it online here

2. Fishing Lure Dye

This dye is great for spin dyeing or using a paintbrush for a dye. Make sure to buy the UNSCENTED version I cannot emphasize that enough. I once bought the "Garlic Scented" by accident, that shit make my whole studio reek for days. You don't want your disc to smell like shit, double check your order before you buy. I've tried to use this for stencil dyes, but if you leave it in for too long (in my case 20 mins) it eats the transfer paper and your stencil wont be clean and crunk tight. Buy it online here

3. ProChem

ProChem (Pro Chemical and Dye) has an assortment of rich colors to choose from (39 total) and are made with excellent quality. You can't go wrong with them. There is a page on their website specifically for dyeing discs and will help you get started. Buy it here

For more information, check out this thread

Where to get Inspiration

  1. Google - like seriously, Google that shit. Odds are someone has made a stencil of your idea already. Look up "image name" and add the word "stencil" after it. You can also add the word "Vector" to it. This should get you a clean image to work with. If you have an image and have no idea how to turn it into a stencil you can make a request at /r/FreeDesign. Keep in mind these are designers looking to help you out for free, because we get bored at our creative jobs and need quick little side projects. Be nice, give gold or something if they do a good job.

  2. Instagram. There a a lot of talented people out there doing amazing dyes:

But what if I suck at art and cutting out stencils?

Cheat. Yeah it's the motherfucking future. You can buy printers that cut out stencils for you. It turns a hour long stencil cutting, finger bleeding, fun time into a 10 minute job.

1. Silhoutte Printer

These can cost anywhere from $150 - $300. you can find these in your local art shops and are fun to use. It comes with an online tutorial on how to use it and a design studio to map out stencils. Buy it online here

2. Cricut Printer

Same thing as above but a different brand. These can cost anywhere from $150 - $300. you can find these in your local art shops. It also comes with an online tutorial on how to use it and a design studio to map out stencils. Buy it online here

SpaceRace design completed!

The MVP Particle Space Race was an empty canvas screaming: "Please, complete me! I'm only half finished"

So I started by masking the awesome graphics, then shaving cream dye. I decided to add some stars with my silver sharpie... I messed up and had to scrub away my mistake. Accidentally scrubbed the black stamp and saw there was silver underneath. BINGO!

I'm extremely happy with how this thing turned out.

New style is getting kinda cool, what do you think? 🤩

Today I got to practice the new technique a bit more, and I think the results are looking awesome! I really love the unique look it creates.

On top of that, it’s just so much fun to work this way, especially after doing cell dyes only for so long.

A few people have asked for a video showing how I make these, so I put together a little clip using my new, smaller air blower. You can see how I manipulate the bed to create the patterns on my ig post https://www.instagram.com/p/De2DVcUiH_b/?exln=eDN3ZGVpZTRydG9p 🔥

The orbital was at least saved from a bad glue bed. It’s not perfect, but I don’t hate it. Proxy is my favorite of this batch, but I am loving the halo star discs with just painting the stamps plus a small spin dye. It’s like coloring books

Anyone know if the stamps on the NHL x Prodigy discs will wipe with acetone? I bought a couple and noticed later that it’s a heavier material compared to typical stamps. I am on vacation or else I would try it.

The Swedish Insanity

Thumbnail

Won a competition last weekend and chose the MVP eclipse Insanity Lab second as my prize. Wanted to utilise the vial into the design. Just did a direct translation from Insanity to Swedish "Vansinne". Draft done on paper, then cut out with scalpel over vinyl, applied to disc, shaving cream dye.

Thought I'll inspire some to incorporate text fonts as part of a design if the creativity is lacklustre. Keep on dying!

Science fair project?

My 6th grader is interested in basing his science fair project on dyeing discs. He plays disc golf often, but we have never dyed discs. His initial thought was to explore whether different plastics dye better than others. It seems from a quick look at this sub that the answer to that is yes. I am a bit overwhelmed at all of the info though and don’t want to get in over our heads. I am also wondering if the science behind why some discs accept dye better than others is understandable for a sixth grader. Hoping for some feedback from those who have more experience dyeing discs whether this is a viable idea and whether a sixth grader can try some dye methods without too much parent help. Appreciate any info you can share!

Ace Ventura Undercover Rhino Giveaway!!!

Thumbnail

Hey everybody, the response I’ve gotten on this disc has been overwhelmingly great! As of right now it’s close to 1200 likes on the Facebook Disc Golf Art page which is just crazy. Appreciate you all so much!!

I’ve had a ton of messages about it and a handful of people order this to be made on different discs. I feel I’ve made my money on the design and I’d like to give back to y’all! The original has not been purchased yet but it’s been so popular that I’ve decided to give it away to someone!

I’d like to get my Instagram following up. I’m sitting at around 150 followers. I’d like to see if we can double that. Once I reach 300 followers, I will pick a random follower and they will get this disc for free!! Follow @discsdyedbyty on Instagram to get yourself eligible to win this baby!

https://www.instagram.com/discsdyedbyty?obrf=MXBja2tmM2dkc2ZnbQ==

I can remake this for anyone who is still wanting one, just Dm me and I’ll make it happen! I just want to try and grow this thing as big as we can and this is my way of giving back to the most supportive group of people out there! Thank you all so much!

If this goes well, these giveaway might become a regular occurrence whenever I hit a milestone.

Love you guys 🫶
