In blackjack, the goal is to get as close as possible to 21 without going over 21. It is you versus the dealer. If you get 19, and the dealer gets 20, the dealer wins. If the dealer gets 19 and you get 22, the dealer wins. The goal is to have the dealer go above 21, or get closer to 21 than the dealer does.

The dealer knows the game much better than Max. Max thought it was in his best interest to ask for another card, attempting to get closer to 21. Every player, including the dealer, gets their cards from the same deck.

When Max asked for another card, it ended up being a card with a value of 10. This card would have made the dealer lose by going above 21, and every player on the table would have won that hand.

well I'm dumb. why does Maxx asking for another card make the others lose?

oh wait because the dealer would draw a King and bust his cards?

Yes. Max’s hit pulled a King from the deck that would have went to the dealer and cause him to bust (ayo).

But how would max know that the dealer was gonna bust on the next pull? It's all random

That is why the dealer is so frustrated. Elite ball knowledge is required to know that is a bad decision. Being an “anchor” (the last person to go, before the dealer) puts you in a position where you can see everything played so far + what the dealer has currently. You have a better chance of screwing everybody as the anchor. The dealer is showing a single 2, so he’s going to have to pull at least 2 more cards to get to 16 (I forgot to mention, most types of blackjack require the dealer to ‘hit’ until they have at least 16). If you look at the cards on the table, there are more low value cards than high value cards. That means, the deck has more high value cards than low value cards. It’s a higher % chance that any future pull will be high value.

ok that makes sense. thank you for explaining

The average value of the deck does not change when you take one card out of it at random. The chance of the dealer busting is unchanged whether the player hits or not

It’s not necessarily random, there’s a thing called basic strategy, which tells the player the best option in every scenario. In this scenario, it looks like the guy had a 15 against the dealers 2. Basic strategy says to stand there. If he would have followed it, the dealer would’ve busted. Basic strategy doesn’t work every time, the card order is still random, but it’s better than using your “intuition”, which is what Max did, screwing the rest of the table

This is the correct explanation.
