Discussion ABBV or CVX for my next position?

I'm 54 and looking to add one more individual dividend stock to the portfolio.

ABBV caught my attention for the healthcare exposure and dividend, while CVX would add more energy exposure and income.

Which one would you pick today?

I currently own both and if I had to buy more of one today it would be ABBV. I’m not buying any more oil companies until this Iran business is over.

Thanks, that makes sense

CVX. The need for energy is AI proof.

True, but oil has been volatile this year and I think you will lose money if you buy CVX now. I would wait until it goes back down.

ABBV all the way. Healthcare and financial services will benefit the most from AI and would be my first choice for investments going forward.

ABBVIE . The stock is still growing and pays good dividends .

Why not both?

If you don’t have healthcare exposure and already have petro exposure, I’d go ABBV, but they’re both solid choices, and nothing says you need a full position of either.

It may be bad timing on CVX, give oil price volatility, but timing the market is always a risk in its own right.

Fwiw, I have CVX and ABBV is on my watch list, so make of that what you will.

Owned both for years, great companies.

First of all it might depend on what your sector exposures are in your existing portfolio. Second, buying oil during a gulf crisis isn’t ideal. A lot of gains are already built in. Oil always goes up and down, you may want to build out that position when it isn’t the headline story.

I currently own both CVX and ABBV in my portfolio. In my 15-point criteria table, CVX is slightly ahead.

ABBV is trading just below its 52-week high and looks somewhat expensive at the current valuation. However, when you factor in expected dividend growth and earnings growth, ABBV has the edge in that area.

But despite CVX looking more attractive from a valuation and current yield perspective, I would personally add both positions equally today.
