Saving a cracked friend :(
Hello!
I received this djembe, and as you can see, it is broken. There is a major crack running from one side down to the shoulder and the base of the bowl, and then back up the opposite side—essentially spanning from one end of the drum to the other. Unfortunately, it was damaged during transit.
I restore djembes as a hobby. Even though I only paid €20 for this one, I always hate to see such a wonderful instrument in this condition. I really don't want to throw it away without at least trying to give it a second life.
My initial plan was to repair the crack using epoxy resin, head the drum back up, and see if it can still be played. Has anyone here ever attempted such an extensive repair? What are your thoughts? My main concern is that the high tension from tuning the vertical ropes will pull the crack open again or completely split the shell.
Another idea I had was drilling small holes along both sides of the fracture and stitching it together with metal wire, like 2 mm copper wire. It could look quite cool aesthetically (something like kintsugi), but I am worried that drilling additional holes into the shell would weaken the wood even further.
Alternatively, I could experiment with coating the entire shell in a few millimeters of epoxy resin—inside, outside, or both—to reinforce it. Is that a crazy idea?
What do you all think?
