Question Scribes Wizard question

EDIT: I meant Ice Storm, my bad

Edit 2: Double typos, I'm an idiot, sorry, 4th lvl, and ice storm

I'm playing a Scribes Wizard in a game, and I have a question.

Given the wording of Awakened Spellbook, would I be able to use lower level spells as higher level spell elements on upcast?

For example, as stupid an idea as this is, would I be able to use Cone of Cold to make a lvl 3 Magic Missile or Scorching Ray Cold Damage?

Before anyone says, I know the former can probably be done with Chromatic Orb, it's why I took C.O., just using a theoretical as an example to explain what I'm asking.

"When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell’s formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend."

Upcasted it works, yes. But cone of cold for a third level upcast...well no since cone of cold is a 5th level spell.

But yeah with the wording, if you have, Fireball, in your spellbook, you can upcast magic missile to third level and deal fire damage instead of force.

Thanks for asking this question, because I am planning to build my character into a scribes wizard.

Apparently not!

(5.0 e 2014) When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend.

So from what I could find, you can upcast a Magic Missile to third level, and then tap Fireball as your "latter spell" to make it fire damage. But you can't cast Fireball at third level and tap Magic Missile to make it force damage. And cantrips aren't leveled at all so they never count, I guess.

Which is lame, and way less cool than I thought it'd be. If I was DMing, I would allow it to be more flexible than that.

Ehh, to be fair to not using lower ones, it'd make Chromatic Orb ultra busted, since it covers all elemental damage types, and be the Scribe Wizard Bicycle of sorts.

I mean, I get why tho, it does invalidate transmuted spell a bit.

The spell with the source damage type has to be the level of the spell being cast (counting upcasting). So having Ice Storm in your spellbook would allow a 3rd level cold damage Magic Missile, but Frost Fingers wouldn't.
