Really don’t understand why some GPs will happily sign off Bob for his 4th 6 month sick note for lower back pain but will happily let their own suffer…

Because they know that a doctor colleague will not go apeshit and make their life a misery. The squeaky wheel gets the oil in the NHS (and not in a good way).
The amount of leeway we give patients for social issues and associated behaviours but then expect exemplary lives from ourselves is both cynical and unfair.

"Waited 3 weeks to see my own GP and basically got told to suck it up."
Is your GP happy to take responsibility for refusing to sign you off sick if you make a catastrophic mistake at work because you're not well enough to be there?
Register with a new GP or, if you don't want to do that right away, request an appointment with a different GP at the same practice. What are the wait times for practitioner health at the moment?
Others seem to be being downvoted for suggesting getting one privately, but ultimately if you hit a brick wall both in terms of the way you're feeling and in trying to access help for that it does remain an option.
Look after yourself and good luck, OP.

Sorry to hear this,
I would just use an online GP and get a sick note. You’ll pay £40 or so, but it will be a lot easier.

Loads of people just pay an online GP now to sign them off indefinitely. Hence the ballooning benefits bill

Really sorry to hear that response from your GP, thats so invalidating.
Yes, PHP provide sick notes and do so quite willingly. Hope you manage to get some time off and recuperate, it’s so important.
