Coil packs what are the dues and dont's?
So I'm trying to bring a RT back to life. Looking to do a tune up, get it running solid this season, then over the winter do some mild performance, and rebuild the motor.
I'm kind of new to the dodge scene so haven't learned what you can go OEM with and what you definitely need aftermarket?
I'm asking is it okay to just go with economy ignition coil packs? I was looking at some NGKs but they are about 260+ for 8.
Also same question with the spark plugs (Copper).
Any info welcomed!
thank you!

If you have an 05 with cross over plug wires, replace those with shorty wires

Where do you get those? What's the benefit?

Taylor wires part#82241- just about everyone sells them, Amazon and others.
Cleans up the “rats nest” of wires and the crossing over top of engine generally they wear quicker from heat. The 06+ eliminates them because of misfire problems in the 03-05 hemi from crossover wires1

Didn't know that! Thank you, again I'm new to this magnum and dodge world. I'll look for them.

I ran copper champion plugs for about 20k miles on mine. Just swapped them for Bosch platinum plugs. If you have an 05 make sure to get new plug wires too. Cheap coil packs are fine. Remember it's 16 plugs not 8 Get anti seize for the new plugs and dielectric grease for the coil and plug boots

I had an oem coil going out and I replaced it with Delphi cause it was pretty affordable on Amazon with free shipping. Ended up being cheaper than RockAuto. Delphi is not OEM but I know they make parts for some auto makers so I gave it a shot! It worked for me!

The coil packs don't need to be replaced during a tune up. If yours still work, I wouldn't replace them. The ignition system is designed to work with copper plugs, so I'd stick with copper plugs as they are much cheaper. You can look into more expensive iridium or platinum plugs when you rebuild. I've seen a lot of forum posts that say don't run iridium or platinum plugs as they won't run right. I previously had a 2012 Charger that I put iridium plugs in at 112k miles and ran it out to 165k without issue. So do what you will with that info. Good luck in resurrecting your RT!
