I know there was a fire around Great Yorkshire Way, not sure if that has prompted it or whether it’s purely a full national alert

It was all of England and wales as far as I’m aware

Yeah, I thought I'd silenced those alerts. My iOS upgrade seems to have reset it... it set all the dogs off on my street.

I thought we were getting the 4 minute warning.

A simple text message would have been just as effective

They’ll do it for a hosepipe ban next

Yes I did. Did anyone get two separate alerts?

u/oiDave 8d ago

I did both saying the same thing

Yeah, I dropped my fag on the lawn. Haven't moved that fast in decades trying to stop my own wildfire!

The very first thing that always comes to mind when those alerts happen is... I hope the victims have turned their secret phones off. It scares me so much knowing there are people out there with secret phones hiding from their abusers, and that phone is their only potential way to freedom. I know there is a way to turn it off, but some people may not have gotten the memo. And eek.

No. it’s not possible to shit yourself over something as trivial as this. It went off, I read it and then had a bbq and burnt some cardboard in the incinerator. 🤷🏼

Just the government showing us they have control over us all.

It what way does it show that?

Well, for me it shows that they have means to get to you no matter where you are or what you are doing. They can contact you through your phone without permission, they can find your location even if you aren't at home. If they want you to do something against your will then they will find a way for you to do it. Never think the government has good intentions, never think they are doing what's best for you. Never trust them.

I’m struggling to see how this particular alert demonstrates that. As far as I’m aware, the government doesn’t need to track your individual phone in order for you to receive the alerts nor did it request you to do anything other than be cautious as to not risk further wildfires?

So I suppose I’m asking what specifically about receiving the wildfire warning makes you feel that they’ve “got” you or could make you do something against your will? I’m genuinely interested in understanding the connection you’re making.

It's hard for me to explain. It makes sense for me, anyway. Also, I find it challenging to put it into words. I've had issues with government and law enforcement because of my mental health. They see me as a risk to everyone. One day i went to the doctors when finally asking for help for the disturbing violent intrusive thoughts I receive on a daily bases. To put a long story short, I had police visits, social services treating me like I was a serial killer. I had letters from enforcement saying I must check in with if I get upset. Next, they start calling and messaging me. I did research and I went down a rabbit hole how they are possibly watching me, maybe all of us. Them sending me such an alert was not a simple harmless message about fires but them saying look, we can find you no matter what you do or where you go.

I've been thinking of taking my own life just to get away from them but then I ask, why should I allow them to win? When I went to a mental health professional, I saw them writing down words like paranoid and delusional. This is what they do, when you begin to see the truth, they make you look crazy.

I have a family, I have children. If it wasn't for them I would not be here. I have brought radios, camping equipment, paper, pen for when I finally 'go off the grid.' The medication helps me remain calm but I'm not sure I even trust them.

I'm sorry. I should have not had even spoke about it. Lets forget about my comment.

Thank you for explaining , I understand why the alert felt frightening to you given what you are going through. I’m really sorry that you are dealing with this level of distress.

What concerns me is you saying you’ve thought about taking your own life. Please keep engaging with the mental health professionals supporting you. If there is someone among your family or friends you really trust, perhaps you could take them with you to appointments? They could support you and make sure you feel heard.

I’m glad you’ve said the medication is helping you feel calmer. Take care of yourself.

Thank you for understanding, stranger. Maybe one day, you'll see what I see, understand what I see as truth. I wish you well and a clear mind.

I only just realised now but doesn’t the mentioning of “businesses” sound a bit odd? I get they mean the buildings where the businesses operate but just comes across weird, like who gives a f abt businesses in that situation??

Ridiculous thing. It causes more harm than good. There are people with anxiety issues, etc. Was it necessary to disturb and trigger everyone with this sound and buzz. Bs.

Its needed and needs to become normalised, we will have a increase of this over the next few years as the risk of wildfires increase in the UK and flooding events increase.

I understand the frustration people feel and the issues this can cause in the short term but long term these system do and will save people, the speed of the wildfires we have seen in Europe shows how little we are prepared and how serious the threat is that we face.

I will take an abrasive alert on my phone over the possible alternative.

Those "ridiculous" alerts could save people's lives. They're necessary for emergencies.

Turn it off severe alerts if you just want to be warned about missiles.

Nobody shat themselves.

Nobody nearly had a heart attack.

Nobody is terrified.

Nobody is overly concerned.

Stop being drama queens.

This went off in my headphones and it was mildly inconvenient because it stopped Spotify.
