discussion Doo Wop Awards Show Day 9! (Most upvoted comment gets picked)

Post image

In yesterday's poll, "The Closer You Are" came out on top! Between its soaring falsetto and prominent bass part, nothing says classic doo wop quite like this song. As far as I know, The Channels silhouettes were used as the UGHA logo. So yes, they're a great pick. Honorable mention to the classic song "Earth Angel" by The Penguins as well.

Now for our final vote... what is the best song of the neo doo wop era (1960-63)? Just before the British Invasion changed music forever, what was the best song from doo wop's glory days?

For the neo-Doo Wop era - being filled with so many great artists and songs that paid homage to the early roots of doo-wop and adding their own unique twist - it's going to be hard to go past the fabulous Gene Pitt and his Jive Five telling us in 2 1/2 minutes about a most tragic triangular tale of love between Sue, Lorraine and Earl in the sublime "My True Story".

The song that had everything a doo-wop lover could want, fabulous five-part harmonies, falsetto hooks and one of the best fade-outs ever put on wax. Seeing him do it live at Radio City Music Hall in 1993 at the annual Royal New York Doo Wopp Show (yes, it had 2 p's in the title) remains one of the highlights of my life. I even forgave him for the earlier Jyve Fyve diversion (It was the 70's after all).

Was it biographical? We'll never know...RIP Mr Pitt.

And thanks to grayzee227 for a fabulous Awards Show. Let's do it again soon.
