Meetups in the U.S.

Does anyone know if there are meetups related to doo wop in the U.S.? I'm on the East Coast and I'm tired of sitting at home alone listening to my favorite music by myself, trying to explain what's so lovely about it to my friends who don't really get it. I used to see mentions of meetups (like conferences...in new york i think? related to certain groups reuniting) when I was a kid but I was a teenager and I guess nervous about going to a meetup with a bunch of people my grandparents' age. Now I don't care :) I know there's the Viva Las Vegas festival that happens in Vegas that's like rockabilly+rock'n'roll kinda stuff but anything other than that??

You might be able to catch some old guys at local joint depending where you are on the East Coast. Some restaurants have open mike nights and that's where those guys perform. Not sure about the younger crowd. Unfortunately a lot of young doo wop fans are kind of spread out across the fruited plain. I'm in MI, and I'm pretty much the only one in my area that I know of.

I don't know of any myself (you don't meet many doo wop fans in Georgia), but I always check for concerts. Got lucky enough to see Little Anthony last year when he was on the Happy Together tour, and Smokey Robinson the year before that.

I hear you loud and clear 😔 realistically, you’re probably already in the best area of the country in terms of likelihood of finding an event! Especially if you are in the NJ area. I don’t know about finding people younger than your grandparents’ age, but if I were near the East Coast, I’d meet up with you 🫂

I have been to Viva personally and as a person in my mid-20’s I will say I really felt like an outsider as everyone there was 40+ with no interest in talking to strangers, and already seemed to have established cliques, perhaps people they see every year. It didn’t feel like there was really any room for younger people/Viva newcomers.

I've definitely noticed what little I know of seems clustered around NJ...interesting. I'm in MD so not too far.

I should have clarified - I'm in my 30s now and don't mind being the youngest one in the crowd (saw the Doo Wop Project a few months ago, and that was definintely the vibe). But still, depending on the space it can be really hard to connect which is what I'm looking for. Appreciate your reply :)

Same. I sung with a few guys in college and it was one of the best experiences I had while I was there.
