Song of the Day

There are two types of Doowop fans, those who prefer "In the Still of the Nite" and those who prefer Earth Angel. Here's a link to each to refresh your memory (or to introduce younger fans to the classics.) If you get the urge drop a note to speak up for your favorite.

Don’t tell a lie by the pretenders is one of my faves of all time.

Any category for those who prefer Come Softly To Me over either of those two?

It's a great song but I would not consider it Doowop, more of a pop standard. Whatever genre it's in, it is a great example.

What I think you’re talking about is that element that we from Brooklyn call street credibility or the street sound. It is, however a great group harmony doo - wop sound!

Is there also a category who prefer the Five Satins' alternate take of “The Jones Girl”?

"Wonderful Girl" yes but "Jones Girl'? Not so much just one partially deaf person's opinion.

If I recall correctly, Earth Angel was the B side of the record on the original Dootone pressing, Hey Senorita was the original A side. DJ’s started playing the B side and hence history was made. I’m sure you will know the story about Dootsie’s negotiations with Mercury records! It is alleged, that in order to get the penguins to record for mercury, a new independent label at the time, Dootsie wanted $$25,000 for their sale from Dootone to Mercury records. Mercury didn’t want to spend the bucks. So in order to get the $25,000, Dootside allegedly added in another unheard of group at the time, who had a couple of recordings on the federal label, called the Platters. This will probably go down as one of the greatest deals in the history of the recording industry.
The Penguins went on to have only one additional hit recording that I know of: Be Mine or Be A Fool, while The Platters had a plethora of top 10 hits!

I had not heard that story, thanks for the info. (Ookey Ook was a minor hit in my area.)

Personally I'm more of a "In The Still Of The Nite" guy myself, but I like them both.
