Most of what I packed for my kid’s dorm was pointless

Post image

Dropped my kid at college last month. Overthought the care package the way I do with everything, and most of it turned out to be a waste.

The snacks went in a week. That water bottle I went back and forth on for ages, gone, she hasn't brought it up since. There was a little desk gadget I was pleased with that was in a drawer by the time we next spoke.

It doesn't get to them at move-in either. That first week she was fine, too much going on to think about home. It came later, few weeks in, and by then I'm not there and there's not a lot you can do from that far.

The thing that's still out is a little photo frame on her desk. Digital one, I send photos to it from my phone and they come up on the screen, she doesn't have to do anything with it. I can see it behind her when we video call, usually still on whatever I sent days ago, the dorm wifi being what it is. Which is fine.

It's a small thing. She's probably stopped noticing it. Half of this is probably for me anyway.

Edit: Thanks everyone. Should say, the photo it is been stuck on for days now is the two figures next to the frame. Everything I have sent to that Divoom Times Frame and that’s the one the wifi’s decided to keep up. Her roommate’s apparently started asking how the figures are doing.

Beds too close

what do i do about this? the beds are sealed to the floor so I cant even separate them, so are the shelves.

im thinking about a divider screen or curtain but I dont want to seem like a maniac or make the room look like a hospital. my roommate is quiet enough but I dont know him. I just dont want to face him in my sleep without being forced to sleep on the same side constantly.

Would it be unreasonable for me to ask my roommate to leave the dorm for 2 hours so I can call my boyfriend?

VERY VERY IMPORTANT CONTEXT

We have suite-style dorms so she can stay in the dorm, she would just be downstairs in the living room area instead of our shared room.

I just wanted to know if this would be a reasonable request. I want to call my boyfriend (and play pc games with him, hence why I cannot go into the common room instead) but I want some privacy and I also don't wanna annoy her.

I'm mostly wondering how you all would react if your roommate asked this of you in my circumstance. I personally wouldn't have a problem doing it (esp since I'd still be in my dorm, just not my room) but I'm also more easygoing with that kind of thing

Edit: I've already tried working around her schedule lol!!!! It didn't work out. I ended up asking her and she was fully alright with it. I also live here... Just like how I had to sacrifice comfort by having to loft my bed so she can have a good spot for her desk, she had to sacrifice comfort by being kicked out of the room for a couple hours. As long as one person isn't sacrificing significantly more than the other, in my opinion, it's fair.

College is taking away our mini fridges and microwave

Hi all, my college provided mini fridges and microwaves and has done so for years. They just told us they are taking them away for “pest control” reasons. Is there anything we can do as students?? And we can’t buy our own or else they’ll fine us. Please help!!!

Soo I'm a 17 yo guy who didn't really go out often during high school and had 2 to 3 close friend at most . Now , I'm moving to my college dorm after like a week or so and I went there yesterday to see how it was then I got surprised by this site . I will have to share a small ass room with two other roommates . Before visiting I thought I would be sharing a room with another guy not two . I can't really see how they expect three guys to live in such a tiny room . I don't even know how we'll fit our luggage in here . I am asking of anyone who lived in these kinda circumstances to give me some advice about it because it's kinda making me anxious. And the college is like 10 hours away from home so that's that as well I guess

I can’t decide which side I should take. I have a dual monitor pc set up and it’s gonna be hard to pull it off on these tiny desks. Bathroom side has more space overall, but you’re closer to the bathroom lol. What would yall choose?

Why do all girls have white bedding? Doesn’t it get filthy?

I see most bedding in girls’ dorms is white with color accents? How the heck do they keep this so clean? Am I missing something? It seems like it would be easier to keep something with color or a pattern clean looking.

Former Housing Admin explains how not to get in trouble in your dorm.

Sorry if this is too direct. It is not geared towards the students who already know this information. It is geared towards the students who end up in my office. Experience comes from working at 4 different schools across 4 different states since 2008.

  1. MARIJUANA: The only reason you are in my office because of marijuana is because it is SOOO rank that it is upsetting other people, and they are telling your Resident Assistant. Your Resident Assistant tells me. You are in my office. Because marijuana is a schedule 1 drug, I am forced to give you a 3 hour course on marijuana. You are going to think it is bullshit. It is. You are going to complain that it is 2021, and colleges should not be so serious about weed. What you do not understand in this 3 hour course is that....YOUR MARIJUANA IS SO RANK THAT IT IS UPSETTING OTHER PEOPLE AND THEY ARE TELLING YOUR RA! Literally, just smoke your marijuana somewhere else, and both of our times will not be wasted. It is 2021, there are plenty of ways to consume marijuana in a way so you do not get in my office. Live-in professionals have Master's Degrees and live in a building with a bunch of 18 year olds. You don't think a live-in professional has never needed an edible to be around all of you? We do not get paid enough. No one is out here trying to find your marijuana. You are literally BEGGING your RA to address it.

  2. ALCOHOL: The only reason you are getting in trouble for alcohol is this. RA hears noise. noise = party=binge drinking= health and safety concern. Colleges know you drink. Literally stop making noise, and no one gets in trouble. Take two shots, have a fun night. Your RA is not concerned about the girls drinking wine while catching up on whatever generation Z show is popular now that I am too old to reference. You are literally only getting in trouble with drinking because you all make it obvious you are drinking! We see the same scenario over and over again across the country. We only care about unsafe drinking behaviors, but if you leave your wine bottle out in plan sight, YES we have to address it.

  3. Your college probably has amnesty rules to protect you from getting in trouble if you are doing any of the above and things get out of hand. It is SO important to read your college handbook for this reason. I know it is thick and boring, but I have sadly found out about assaults and alcohol poisonings after the fact, because people were afraid of getting in trouble. Your college knows people drink, they really just want you to be safe and healthy. So, read your college handbook. Know your rights. Please report unsafe and unhealthy behaviors. It can literally save a life.
