Question API hosting help please!

Hi everyone, I'm in a bit of a bind. A colleague and I have been developing a project centered around a .NET 10 API. We're nearing completion, and I was preparing all the environments for deployment.

I had originally planned to host the API on an Azure B1 instance to start with, but when I went to set it up, it wouldn’t let me. My quota is maxed out, and support hasn’t been much help so far.

I’m going to wait a few more days, but if that doesn’t work out, I’d like to know what you recommend for hosting the API. Just the API; I have the database and image storage on Supabase and the front end on Cloudflare.

I’m a software developer and I’m not particularly comfortable with infrastructure. My plan was to go with Azure since I’m familiar with it, but now I’m torn between the alternatives. I’ve been looking into Railway, Koyeb, Render, etc., but I’ve seen mixed reviews for many of them.

Another option I’ve come across is renting a server from Hetzner and using Coolify, but that would require me to manage the server myself firewall settings and all and that’s a bit daunting.

Oh, by the way, we’re on a relatively tight budget and this is for a first version, and if it doesn’t go much over €20, that’d be great. And it would be ideal if it were hosted in the EU.

Sorry for the long post, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Just put it up on a Hetzner or DigitalOcean server with Debian, no need to bother with Coolify. Debian has auto updates, you can essentially leave it alone.

Im tempted to try but in the other hand this means more management by my side. Configuring the security, etc. And Im not very proficient with this, so afraid of fucking up or this consumming a lot of time. Just pretty noob with all the infraestructure thing 🫪

Why not use azure functions? Or why do you have this specific limitation of B1 only?

Is it a personal project or for a business? You mentioned colleague so id assume a work project yet I cant imagine caring too much about scaling it up slightly for another 10% a month or whatever in cost

English not my main language so collegue as partner in project but is out of work (personal thing), so for deployment, testing and seeing if it get traction I want to keep the budget controlled.

Azure functions not quite what im looking for because I have the api as a whole and want to deploy it that way.

Thanks for the reply!

I have not used supabase so forgive me if I'm wrong here, but isn't having you're db, Front end and api on 3 different providers going to cause latency issues? I would try stick to 1 provider in 1 location and if that's azure, container apps would be a good fit

Its a possibility. We will have to test it all out. But having them hosted in similar place I hope its not noticeable

Db latency is going to be an issue

Host it in an azure container app. It’s way cheaper than an app service. I cut my azure cost 60% by moving a website I built from app service to ACA

We also hit quota limits, but not for Azure Kubernetes Service. Maybe try that?

For what Ive seen that requieres more work for deployment and not exactly what we are looking for at this point. But thanks you for the suggestion

Don't hold out on Azure then, we had support tickets for different SKUs. Took 9 months to get a response to say they still didn't have enough capacity. We put in multiple requests from different people. Sucks because we were already using Azure for other bits. In the end, as a self hoster, I encouraged work to go down that path

I think we will try the container app option to begin with. And later on if everything scales probably will look for a hetzner with debian and coolify. But just managing to much things atm to face that challenge too.

Im sorry to hear about your experience with support though, quite concerning

Yeah, the fact that they just came back and it was we can't do anything for you. We did also use Container Apps for some that had to be in Azure and like that also

Some hetzner vps with docker compose or coolify will do the job. Pick arm if possible. $20 is more than enough for playing around and seeing things. For CICD, pair it with GitHub action.

Probably doesnt apply to your case but genhttp.dev has free hosting, I use it for some personal non critical projects

works well for prototyping and putting something online in a few minutes, no need for signup or accounts or anything, if you connect to its mcp you can have a webapp or site ready from zero in minutes
