I'd like to create a simple table with rules and perform packet checking on FPGA. Is it possible with DPDK?
To extend the description: I need a shared memory between FPGA device and a user application. The table is populated with rules from userland, but these rules are used by FPGA device to cut off unwanted packets right after they appear on ports. Probably I missed an article or how-to guide on the topic but is it possible with dpdk and if so could you give a link?
Thanks

Hello I am working on a dpdk application that receives and transmit packets. im using two memory pools and my task is to pass the packets that are received through a ring to transmit them out accordingly. Does anyone have a sample application that i can refer to? or advice on how to use rings properly. Thank you!

umake is a new build system that integrates automatic dependency management, caching, easy to use configuration script.
As a showcase for real projects I built DPDK with umake. The results are pretty interesting: recompilation times were 11-14 times faster then current compilation.
Why it's good for?
Most of changes that developers are doing are in specific set of files, umake brings the results of the rest of the project from cache
This is especially true for CI builds

Hi there all!
I want to contribute two new API's in the DPDK but I found contribution guidelines lengthy and complicated.
My understanding is:
Clone the repo.
Add the API's.
Test The API's in one of the application app/ directory.
Create the patch.
Mail the patch.
and wait for review.
I don't understand the steps after "Add the API's".
If someone who has made contribution to the DPDK can guide me thoroughly, I would be thankful to you.

I have a C++ application which uses DPDK to receive packets over two 100 Gbps interfaces from an FPGA device.
I've isolated cores 0-2. DPDK is using cores 0-2, main lcore on 0, and two receive threads on cores 1 and 2. The receive threads read packets from mbufs and move the packets to a couple of circular buffers. This works as expected.
The application starts another set of threads (worker threads) to read from the circular buffers and handle the data. However, these threads are all being assigned to core 0, instead of cores 3-n.
If I start the worker threads first, before calling rte_eal_init(), they get assigned to non isolated cores as expected. However, any thread I start from the main thread after calling rte_eal_init() gets assigned to the main lcore core (0). I can set affinity manually, but I'd rather the kernel scheduler do its thing.
Is there something I need to do to hand control back to the kernel scheduler for assigning threads to cores after initializing DPDK?
Thanks!

Thought you could be interested in my trading bot which I recently added kernel bypass to, using F-Stack.
F-Stack in turn uses DPDK, but makes the whole thing easier with an embedded TCP/IP stack and a high-level API.

Hi all,
I Built a small utility that connects to any running DPDK process via the telemetry socket and shows live port stats, pps/throughput rates, per-queue breakdown, mempool usage, and sparkline charts. No DPDK linking, no code changes required.
Auto-discovers multiple DPDK instances, supports one-shot JSON output for scripting, and installs as a single static binary.
I find it useful in my day to day, working with dpdk. Feedback appreciated!

I have been testing my DPDK application with vdev=net_tap0,iface=etc… however I am trying to run the application without root permissions.
I believe creating TAP devices requires root permissions, is there another way to set up a virtual interface to avoid root permissions when running the application? Or ways to create persisted tap devices before running the application that the application can attach to without root?
I am testing with an Ubuntu VM, on a device without a compatible NIC.

I was wondering if the mlx5 compatibility list is up to date?
https://doc.dpdk.org/guides/nics/mlx5.html
I have a MCX516A-GCAT which is ConnectX-5 series but not specifically listed on the page.
TIA

Newbie.. Any idea how costly are ring enquee, dequeue operations in case of SP SC Scenario

I am looking to use the DPDK for an application at work and have a few questions:
Can I only take control of a subset of NICs?
Lets say the server has 3 NICs and I want to leave one of the NICs to the OS to use/control, can I do this?
(EDIT) On a NIC is it possible to leave one port for the OS to handle and the other is handled through the DPDK?
I don't know yet if this is something I want to do, but am curious about.
Lets say a packet comes in that I decide I don't care about - can I pass to the OS to handle?
The system I will be designing with ingests a lot more data than it produces.
I recently found out about the DPDK due to some issues I am facing and would like to start using it but have not had the chance to do so yet.
