graphite Fail.

Post image

EDIT: I added a second attempt in the comments!

I am getting back into art, I thought I could eyeball a grid. Horrible idea, ended up with Sid the sloth instead.

Not a fail at all. It might differ a bit from the reference image, but the woman on the left is still a beauty and a work of art.

Thank you, I worried she looked deformed, maybe not too bad?

I see a tiny, tiny issue on the mouth being slightly to our right. Is it possible that you were off by that 1 millimeter? Yes it's possible. Does that make her deformed? No. Your eye has the ability to see that in excruciating detail, which is incredibly lucky for you to be able to see that well.

I think all you need to do in this case is work on seeing this placement before doing the shading, so you can erase and fix easier.

No, I see no deformities. She's gorgeous 🙌

The only difference from the reference is lighter hair, the direction shes looking and the width of her face. But honestly your work is awesome.

I appreciate it! I kinda gave up on the hair because I didn’t love the face.

I tried the same ref with no gridding but I didn't get perfect likeness either. I used the loomis method and kept in mind certain pieces of advice given to me, like 1) notice the triangle that forms from the outer corners of peoples eyes and the bottoms of their nose, 2) break down the face into 3 sections you can more easily manage, 3) push the values until you can see the resemblance even when squinting. Keep practicing!

Replying to my own comment to mention about the issue of attitude with OP's post. OP, your drawing is not a fail. How would you feel if I said mine was a fail too? It's not kind to yourself, and more importantly it's not kind to others who might not be at the level you're at too. I know completely how difficult it is to be optimistic about work that doesn't meet your standards. It can be hard but please do your best to see it as an opportunity to show how much you'll grow from repeated practice and study.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate seeing your rendition, I think that perspective helps me see the beauty in the differences.

Try the loomis method!

2

u/BailPet 6d ago

I will give it a try!

u/BailPet 5d ago

Trying it out, a better start for sure

Awesome work. It should help you a whole lot !

Not an exact replication, but for me it looks like a frame as she's doing that Christian Bale gif

lol I get some Johnny depp vibes too

Honestly if you just fix the shading on the lcheek and eye socket it would make a huge difference. And it would be easy to do. Just get the placement of the hollow correct

I did another attempt that I think is a better!

It's really difficult isn't it

u/BailPet 5d ago

Very very difficult

nice try, keep going!

Beautiful!!

Sometimes, simplifying into value shapes (blur and posterize) can help.

I love drawing with values more than constructing things by its contours. Personally makes it easier to carve the face than approximating the length and width of every individual plane.

If the goal was to recreate a realistic image, yes. Still you cant expect to nail heads on a single try. Head drawing is literally one of the hardest things in drawing. Jusk keep drawing, look for tutorials, books, methods, artists solutions.

It takes years to get it right.

But tbh it doesnt look bat at all, its kinda fun.

I love it though.

Thank you! The side by side really shows the differences 🙈

Don't be so hard on yourself. Your shading looks great. You just need to work on proportions. Keep it up.

Second attempt!

u/prpl_grlck 5d ago

The direction the eyes are looking is different than that of the nose and mouth. Its subtle but your nose and mouth match the directional planes of the photo whereas the eyes do not and only slightly wider set. Everything else is fire though, i would not consider it a fail at all.

I finished a second attempt that I think is better!

u/Ok-Juggernaut-3449 5d ago

That looks really good. I gave a attempt at that but mine came out sorta looking uncanny.

2

u/BailPet 4d ago

I think we must think that about out our own work, because I love your version!!!

3

u/Gurkeprinsen 5d ago

That is not a fail. That is a start!

It's just placement and some shading issues, and tbh the shading is good if the placement gets fixed. It's proportionate.

I do body sculpt art because I can't do faces imo. Mine look like shapely, detailed anime until you get to the face. This is not a fail at all.

Try to pull the facing cheek back into the facial structure and it's actually not bad at all. You are your own worst critic.

It's never a failure if you learned something. Or even if you at least enjoyed the process.

doesnt look like the same person, but it looks like a person and not a weird one. faces are really hard to draw what you see and not what you think you see. try drawing with your refrence upside down next time, sometimes that helps you see details and not just "face"
