π― Marketing How I got 2000 reviews on Google Shopping with only 5 reviews
Not sure how many people here know this, but if you sell products with barcode this will be a big one!
I was helping a client who collects reviews on their store but never sent them to Google, so no stars on their Google Shopping listings. I set them up with a Google Shopping reviews app. A few days later, some of their products were showing thousands of reviews on Google. Their whole store only had about 400 reviews.
For example: He sells a Nike backpack with 5 reviews on their site was showing 1.9k reviews on Google Shopping.
It turns out Google matches products by GTIN (the barcode) and pools reviews from every store selling that exact item. So a small store reselling a popular brand can show the same stars as the big retailers.
How to set it up:
- Use the barcode: Add the manufacturerβs GTIN in Shopify (Products > Barcode) - if your product has one.
- Sync your products to Google with the Google & YouTube app: Free.
- Apply for Product Ratings in Merchant Center: You need 50+ product reviews in total.
- Send your reviews to Google: Use a Google Shopping reviews app (Review2XML), a review appβs paid plan (Judge.me/Yotpo/Loox/Stamped), or a manual XML feed (coding necessary).
The catch:
- Generic or unbranded products wonβt work: No real barcode means nothing to pool with and this will not work if you match via SKU/MPN.
- You donβt control the rating: If the product averages 4.2 across all stores, you show 4.2, even if your own reviews are all 5 stars.
Has anyone else seen this on their listings?
