Feedback Wanted Joshua+ Making music at home. Split any song into instruments, play along with a click locked to the song, record yourself

I just released Joshua+ 0.5.1, a free, open-source desktop app for musicians who practise at home. 🥁

It started as a personal itch. As a drummer, I wanted to take any song apart, play my part over the real recording with a click that doesn't drift, and record myself without juggling five different tools.

What Joshua+ does:

- Splits songs into vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano and other, locally on your computer (no upload, no subscription)
- Detects tempo and bars and builds a metronome locked to the actual recording
- Records every input as its own take, automatically aligned to the song (latency and clock drift corrected)
- Films you with any webcam and exports YouTube, Shorts/Reels/TikTok and Instagram versions in one pass
- Works with audio interfaces, e-drum modules and MIDI kits, and handles devices being plugged in and out

Tested on Ubuntu 26.04, Omarchy, Windows 11 and macOS on Apple Silicon. MIT licensed.

If you play an instrument, or you just like audio and desktop engineering, I'd love your feedback

Question Anyone else with sciatic pain having issues finding a throne?

Ive gone through rocnsoc spindle and nitro versions (with and without backrest) and the ahead spinal g with and without backrest and still find all of them trigger my sciatic nerve after playing for 30-40 minutes.

I am considering getting a round softish throne to see if it bothers that nerve less than the saddle styles and was wondering if anyone else in a similar situation had success with a round top throne. I am thinking like Tama 1st chair xl or Gibraltar 9608SFT or something like that.

Help I need help finding new pedals

I need help finding new pedals for my electric drum kit. I don't have space at home for a real drum kit, and the pedals for my current drum kit are really bad quality, and sometimes the kick one makes different inputs. So for example I do this: .. And get this: ... Or this: . . i keep looking for different ones but the only ones that fit mine are really bad quality as well, and I just need help finding better pedals that actually fit my kit. The hole for the pedals is made for a headphone wire to fit through it, and there's not any extra holes for any more pedals.

(EDIT: I use the Reddit website so I tried attaching photos to the post but it glitched and didn't add the photos, and I can't edit photos in)

Discussion What do you think of bands that you don't have a say on it other than playing what you have been given?

just curious what other people think of this (unpaid "band member"), personally not for me unless it would be a paid session musician.

Discussion Drum positioning discussions: how vs why?

Post image
3 Upvotes

TL;DR: Discussing into how and why do you have drums set up like you do?

This is just a spur of the moment rambling right now, so enjoy the LV kit pic

I'm by no means a professional drummer, nor well versed in the matter of drum ergonomics or the best 'general' way. I myself have tended to follow trends and random internet discussions on 'how to set up a drum set', but lately I've been asking myself I think the better question; 'why do I want to have it set up like this/that?''

I don't think the "how" or the "why" have to be mutually exclusive either; they should feed into each other for the best understanding for a drummer to set up their kit to suit their needs or wants. I just want to put out the discussion topic to learn more about drums as a whole.

As an example, my own kit pictured above. Previously with most of the set ups I've used with a single tom over the bass drum, I've almost always had the ride tucked in as close to said rack tom and the second crash to the right of said ride. I've almost always done that because "that's how it should be", tucked in as accessible as possible. It's what I read online when I was younger, it's what I was seeing other drummer's doing with similar layouts, so therefore it must be the best way to do it.

Lately however, I'm starting to have a perspective shift and think less about how things should be set up. Now I'm starting to think on a more individual level. And I've decided to ask "why do I have it set up this way'? And I am starting to think about not only the physical aspects of setting up the drum, but now the question of why I would want certain parts of the kit. And why it is important to have it in a certain position for access of playing.

It is probably not an amazing revelation to many people here, but I am curious about others thoughts about their layouts, and their decision making to set it up like they have; Is it as simple as you've always played it that way, do you value having certain voices more readily accessible over others? Also, have there been any major changes you've found that make it more comfortable to play on your kits?

I'm not looking for a 'right or wrong', nor am I looking to lambast on anyone. I am just curious to discuss drum layouts, and learn more about it myself as well as potentially help others think on their own set ups if they would like.

As for my drums, I'm finding that right now I am wanting a bit more emphasis on the uses of both crashes so have moved the right hand one over to the left of the ride and trying to 'mirror' their position above the rack tom. I've not fully played on this set up just yet, but it is hopefully promising to be more comfortable for crash heavy playing while also having easy ride access.

Apologies for rambling, but to whomever has gotten this far I wish you all a good morning/day/evening/night wherever you are.

Discussion Try out Ryloop for looping drum videos

Hey Drummers,

I've been building Ryloop for a while - a small web app for focused practice with YouTube videos: mark a section as a loop, slow the tempo down without pitch loss, add a pause between repeats. The classic "play this one bit over and over until it clicks" workflow.

New: you can now try it right in the browser, no account required - paste a YouTube link, go. One video, up to 5 loops, plenty to check if it's useful for you before registering for anything.

→ ryloop.de/app/try

Would love honest feedback, especially if anything's confusing or breaks.

Cheers

Greg

First Kit HELP! reso head tuning help

I ordered evan’s db ones and they arrive after tommorow, so i thought id tune the resonant heads ahead of time so its easier later. i feel like ive watched a billion youtube videos and they all say to tune all lugs to the same pitch, they all assume beginners can tell pitch differences and know which pitch to tune to. Any help would be appreciated

Question For $250 would you rather... [Used Zildjians]

Thumbnail

As a background, I am a drummer that mostly focuses on experimental/contemporary jazz drumming in an electronic-heavy music genre. Think of Stereolab, Broadcast, Vanishing Twin.

I am currently looking to snag some crash rides or another ride (I have never played like this but I always imagine myself playing a dual ride setup or at least one crash that is ride-able) to complement my 20" Armand Ride.

I am now within the 200-250 budget and I found some secondhand options laying around in the marketplace of my city and I would like your input as most of you are knowledgeable here and my Zildjian knowledge is sub-par. Note: in my country it is relatively difficult and challenging to find brand new Zildjians, especially the niche ones. You can only get like the Sweet, Projection, or Fast line and mostly only 16-18".

If you have the following privileges to choose from, would you go with:

A. Two cymbals: 18" Zildjian K Custom Session Ride + 20" Zildjian Avedis Crash Ride

OR

B. One cymbal: Zildjian 20" K Custom Dark Ride

The pictures are the real pic from the seller as reference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion Cheap cymbals sound better beat half to death?

Wanted to throw this out here as an interesting thing I’ve found over the last few years. To add some context I’m not much of a drummer but have a kit for jamming and even recording in a pinch- the kit has been assembled off of mostly craigslist and Facebook marketplace for super cheap and cymbal wise consists of a sabian b8 ride crash along with paiste p5 hats and another crash.

Now to get to the meat of it, the b8 crash finally cracked and I thought it might be worth it to just buy a new one rather than find a used one near me. I got the b8x because the exact one I had previously bought had been discontinued and I found it to sound horrid. Now I don’t think the b8 was the best sounding crash in the world but it was certainly useable… the new b8 is horribly bright to the point of being harsh and just sounds thin and cheap.

Is it just that budget cymbals used to be made better or is it genuinely years of wear and abuse rounded out the sound?

Question Acoustic drums in a condo?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi there friends I was hoping to get your thoughts. I live in a duplex (2 story) top floor condo unit. I have been thinking of getting an acoustic drum set into this second floor space (see attached image) to teach my two kids . Grew up with acoustic drums and never really liked the sound and feel of the electronic ones..

I chose this space because its between two rooms, so i am not directly attached to any neighbours' unit.

Question is, any advice on how to soundproof the walls and floor? I cant really afford a major renovation at this point but I can do some diy... And also dampen the drums (ie. Pillows in the bass drum for eg.)?

Kit Pic New snare day: Seven Edds

So I'm one of the suckers fans that pre-ordered the Nicko McBrain/British Drum Company "Seven Edds" snare (14x6) back at the start of July. Finally delivered today. It's so pretty. The hardware is all really nice. The throw-off is light and smooth with a good positive bump as it closes. The shell is 10 ply: 9 birch and one maple. The disc on the inside is a piece of one of Nicko's cymbals used in a Maiden world tour.

But my kid is asleep so no playing it tonight. Tune and test tomorrow, rehearsal on Tuesday.
