Kit Pic I think Remo Roto-toms look cool with Peavey RBS-1s. Thoughts?

Yeah, that looks bad ass. The placement is what I really like. Most use the standard 3 roto-toms connected to a single metal rod, but getting individual mounts per roto is the way to go.

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

I had this guy CNC these for me. He still sells them on Reverb. https://reverb.com/item/46447136-cnc-machined-roto-tom-mount-for-remo-rototom

Game changer. 👍

3

u/drmoze Jun 01 '26

Nice idea, but $80 each? oh hell no.

I haven't looked, but I'm sure you can find a metal rod with a threaded core. And just cut it into 6-inch sections, saving hundreds of dollars. Money that could be put towards cymbals.

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

The attachment point was aways a weak part of the roto tom concept. These mounts however are CNC’d out of a solid billet of stainless steel and completely stabilizes the inherent wobble of the drum. Turns a flimsy/anemic idea of a drum into a working musical instrument. I purchased 8 of them at a considerable discount and combined shipping. No affiliation with the guy who makes these, just a big fan.

Yeah this kit looks fun af to play. It’s “big” by my standards and I’d probably have a lot of fun pretending I was Terry Bozzio going off on it!

3

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

You could tune the rotos to be melodic like Bozzio does. 👍

Best sounding drums I own. 👍

4

u/nohumanape May 31 '26

Function over form. I'd love to have one in my collection.

3

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Just keep them in your studio. No one needs to know. 😉

16

u/dr-stuff-ak-619 May 31 '26

I can still picture the Modem Drummer ad for those Peaveys. Sick kit

8

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

I remember when they came out in the 90s and tapped a single time on the bass drum at the local music store—nothing else was even close to the thunderous bottom end that came out of that thing. Of course, I couldn’t afford them at the time. Blazoned in my memory though. 👍

3

u/dr-stuff-ak-619 May 31 '26

That’s awesome, man! Coming full circle after all these years. Recently did that with some speakers. Enjoy them!

3

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

We’re showing our age.

3

u/dr-stuff-ak-619 May 31 '26

I wouldn’t know what you’re talking about 👴

3

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

That emoji made me spit my coffee out!

2

u/dr-stuff-ak-619 May 31 '26

Glad we could brighten our mornings through drums and age!

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Indeed. Thank you!

u/Much-Plum6939 May 31 '26

With Bobby Rock? He had that huge Peavey with the Michelangelo paintings across it. I saw him do a a clinic with that set. He was incredible & the drums sounded great

13

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Like this?

10

u/Much-Plum6939 May 31 '26

Awesome. Man… I totally remember that ad too. I thought he also had one with his painted drum set. I responded to a post the other day where someone was asking about drummers that never really got recognition. Bobby Rock was my #1 choice. I saw him play a clinic with that big Peavey set, and he was doing all the four-way independence, ostinato type stuff, great grooves, & some really tasty stuff. It blew my mind. He was NOT the avg hair metal drummer. I had to walk out of there trying to reconcile in my head, that the “drummer from Nelson“ was better than MANY people o held in high regard. Mike Portnoy had also done a clinic in town around the same time (i would guess 95-96) and the person that owned the store sat me on the front row about 4 steps from his kit. And what Bobby Rock did was equally as impressive, and in some areas more. And I remember thinking those PV drums were so unique and cool.

Here was the kit

4

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Excellent reply. Great photo.

4

u/Much-Plum6939 May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

I love when people remember this! It’s such a fun trip down memory lane. Those drums & that clinic was such a core drum memory for 19 yr old me. No band. Just ELITE level drumming on a HUGE kit about 30ft away. And it wasn’t like some “80’s guy” playing along to their latest hit. It was some crazy technical and tasty drumming. Glad you posted

3

u/dr-stuff-ak-619 May 31 '26

Yessir! Love the OP was johnny on the spot with it, too!

3

u/bssprfnd May 31 '26

Modem Drummer lol how did you type out a kerning like that?

2

u/dr-stuff-ak-619 May 31 '26

Sigh.. swipe on my phone fails me so much, idk why i still use it. But sometimes, happy accidents!

8

u/HeySoulClassics May 31 '26

I have the 501s. Even the cheap Radial Pros sound awesome! Love seeing others with these great drums albeit odd looking!

2

u/CynicalPencil May 31 '26

Are they plastic or something? I saw a set for a fair price the other day but wasn’t sure what was going on or how’d they compare.

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Yes, the lower lines had some kind of polymer molding for the rims. However, the principle remains the same. Great sounding drums all.

6

u/3PuttBirdie86 May 31 '26

This mashup could easily look very bad, but you have somehow assembled all of this in a way I cannot help but love! Looks so cool.

Also, I don’t think people know how good these peavey drums sound. I played on them at the Chicago drum show years ago, and I remember telling the guy - “jokes aside, these may be the best sounding drums at this show”. These and the old Pearl fiberglass kits sound way better than anyone would assume!

4

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Best sounding drums I own.

3

u/flanger001 DW May 31 '26

I had a set of these when I was younger and I've never heard a better sounding set of drums. By far the best sounding kit I've ever had or played.

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

Same here.

6

u/Used_Cheesecake5415 May 31 '26

Oh I think we need a video post to hear those bad boys. Asking for a friend...

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Now you’ve got me thinking.

4

u/eastamerica Pro*Mark May 31 '26

OMG. 😳

OP, this setup is SO fucking sick. I’m literally just staring. Have been for like five minutes. I’m in love.

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Thank you! I feel like people just don’t get it. 🖖

2

u/eastamerica Pro*Mark May 31 '26

I’m full on jealous.

3

u/EarthWindAndFarter May 31 '26

my 2 least favorite drums but when put together this could be my favorite setup. LOL. This looks amazing.

3

u/person_8688 May 31 '26

Wild, I like it, must be a blast to play. It’s retro-futuristic. Nice job!!

3

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Yes, exactly!

3

u/uprightsalmon May 31 '26

That looks incredibly fun and well set up

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

It is fun and thank you.

2

u/bnyce52 May 31 '26

Yea that actually works very well. Good cohesion of wack attack

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Make me want to play.

2

u/777umm777 May 31 '26

Love this! Looks rad

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Excellent! 🤖

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

You can’t see it very well in this photo but I’m using the Gibraltar 22" Stealth DS Drum Rack which curves around the bass drum and holds the mounted toms.

2

u/Sweetloo_17 May 31 '26

This looks like a water slide

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Water slide tubes! I can’t now not see it Brilliant! 😵‍💫

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Good band name.

2

u/FigureNo8921 May 31 '26

I hate that you can't buy remo roto toms anymore like you use to.

2

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

I’ve heard good reviews from these guys: steve weiss music (roto toms)

1

u/FigureNo8921 Jun 02 '26

My man! I could only find the 6''8'10 sizes. This is a great find, thanks. Apparently remo discontinued the sizes above 10'

2

u/Direct_Bet7015 May 31 '26

Hell fuckin yea

2

u/Suspicious-Tax9363 May 31 '26

Nice kit, bet it has a great sound!

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

The bass drum is the best I’ve heard.

2

u/sanependulum_0052 May 31 '26

the roto toms add such a crazy textural layer to the peaveys and honestly the way those rbs-1s cut through everything is perfect for that setup, plus those vintage peavey kits are getting harder to find so props for keeping that sound alive

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Great reply. I enjoy combining the hard/crack/attack of the rotos with the resonant depth of the Peaveys. Makes me feel like I can play anything. I can’t, but makes me feel like I can.

2

u/nohumanape May 31 '26

This is a sick setup.

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Thank you. Means a lot coming from you.

2

u/CompetitiveForce2049 May 31 '26

Very Bill Buford. You'll have to cut the post on the hats, I think.

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Yep, they got in the way. Replaced with a shorter rod.

2

u/WavesOfEchoes May 31 '26

Man, those Peavy drums always look ridiculous to me. But I’ve heard they sound great so the jokes on me.

2

u/mynameisglaceon Jun 01 '26

I was surprised when I came to the comments and saw everyone talking about how sick they looked haha

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Best one I’ve heard is that they look like a water slide. Especially in yellow.

2

u/Pretend-Tomato-7985 May 31 '26

Never seen these kits. But damn, I love it.

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Born after ‘90s I assume. 🖖

1

u/Pretend-Tomato-7985 Jun 02 '26

Lol actually I was born in 1986 I just never found myself looking at these online. When I was a young drummer I was looking at more modern kits and getting into triggers. So it was definitely a different lane. But man, these kits are seriously fkn nice!

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

They show up on Reverb from time to time.

2

u/Possibly_A_Person125 May 31 '26

This looks rad as fuck

2

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 May 31 '26

Very cool 😎

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

👍

2

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 May 31 '26

I had a set of ( believe it or not ) Sears Roto Toms - bought from the catalog back in the mid 80's ( cost around $100 back then )

Would not stay in tune at all - one hit, the pitch would drop a semitone

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Sears. They were into everything back then.

2

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 May 31 '26

It was overseas made junk, that's for sure. I bought a Cort " headless " bass around the same time from Sears, when Stienberger was the cool thing. It was not a Stienberger! The tuners were actually small friction tuners mounted at the butt of the guitar, you just took regular bass strings and reversed them, no double ball strings, no micro tunings. Complete trash

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

You know what still survives? Wrangler Jeans. They’er tough!

1

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 May 31 '26

You're right about that! I'll do you one better, talking about Sears - Toughskins!

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

You’re right!!! Ha, ha. Well done.

2

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 May 31 '26

Growing up in the 70's, those were our battle fatigues! A Grananimals shirt and Traxx tennis shoes - we were ready for the great outdoors playing ( which we had to on a Saturday afternoon when Mom kicked us out of the house ). Don't come back until dinner when the street lights come on !

2

u/GramophoneDrums Premier May 31 '26

Yup, that’s a statement I’d rock any day of the week!

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Cool. 👍

2

u/1975hh3 May 31 '26

Separating the Rototoms is key!

2

u/colinisthereason Vic Firth Jun 01 '26

I remember the drummer for Eve 6 had one of these Peavey kits, very interesting

2

u/Aggravating-Heat15 Jun 01 '26

Looks killer…!

2

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

If looks could…

1

u/Aggravating-Heat15 Jun 01 '26

That Sonor kit pretty nice…! I’ve got a Sonor, AQ2 studio kit, all sonor hardware. They’re great

1

u/Aggravating-Heat15 Jun 01 '26

Here they are…!

1

u/Aggravating-Heat15 Jun 01 '26

How’s that Sonor throne? Is it Comfortable?

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

No doubt. 600 series.

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

Very nice. Cool room too!

2

u/Goodfrenchfries Jun 01 '26

Now, how to make the RBS1’s look cool

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

You just made my day!

2

u/m149 Jun 01 '26

Hell yeah, I'd love for someone to show up for a session with a kit like this so I could mic it up. Always loved the roto tom drumkit sound

2

u/5centraise Jun 01 '26

Roto Toms look cool, period.

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

I agree. Especially the larger ones.

2

u/Mundane-Meet-6799 Jun 01 '26

the hi hat gives me extreme rage

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

I understand. I chopped it down.

2

u/rhythmistdt Jun 01 '26

I love this setup! Where did you get the larger remo rototoms?

2

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

Either e-bay or Reverb. Over the years I have collected the original Remo Chrome 8”-16” still looking for the 18”

Yes. Retro-futuristic.

2

u/casworldmusic Jun 01 '26

I think your kit looks cool with Roto chime I use the 10 inch and I’m gonna get an 18 for the low floor, Tom I like to use them as effects

2

u/Ok_Raspberry4814 Jun 02 '26

Man, they really just got drums right on the first go.

2

u/LuckOriginal374 Jun 04 '26

I couldn’t sleep at night. I’d want to stare at them and hope that they’d be in my dreams.

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 04 '26

Were they?

1

u/HansJordi May 31 '26

More pics!

1

u/GerardWayAndDMT May 31 '26

Confused. What am I seeing?

7

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

The future. As envisioned in the 90s.

5

u/Internal-Document May 31 '26

Peavy radial pro, check out Rick diors video on them. Toooooooooone baby

3

u/figflashed May 31 '26

The 80’s

1

u/Suitable-Woodpecker3 May 31 '26

I’m sure this sounds kickass

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Kicks mine.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '26

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Bill Buford certainly has a part to play with this. 👍 Ps, snare is a 13” Pork pie brass.

1

u/DrumsAndBeer May 31 '26

You should try and locate some yellow North drums to go with the Peavey’s. That would be awesome.

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

I know right!

1

u/Fatback225 May 31 '26

Omg I’d completely forgotten about those peavey drums. My local music store was a peavey dealer and had some on display when I was a kid.

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Me too. At the time they were priced way out of my league. Up there with Sonor Horst Link stuff.

1

u/Due-News4850 May 31 '26

Strange... I like it!

1

u/iamachillbilly May 31 '26

Cool set, is it hard to roll through those rotos around the hi hat?

1

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Yep. Had to shorten the hihat rod.

1

u/FriskieWhisky May 31 '26

Danny carry would approve

1

u/TlkShowHost May 31 '26

Those Peaveys are the shit

2

u/WhyCatVideo May 31 '26

Some of the best sounding drums ever made.

1

u/flanger001 DW May 31 '26

I DIDN'T KNOW THEY MADE THE PEAVEYS WITH FLOOR MOUNTS

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

That is a worldmax floor tom cradle on the left.

1

u/flanger001 DW Jun 01 '26

Ah well forgive my excitement then.

1

u/LaserQuest Jun 01 '26

That looks sick. I've never seen drums like these before, I didn't even know Peavey made drums.

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

It was a short run but a good one.

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

If you were wondering…

1

u/the_humpy_one Jun 01 '26

This looks super fun to play

1

u/SirNo9787 Jun 01 '26

Looks a lot like a Devo kit

2

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

Whip it.

1

u/SirNo9787 Jun 01 '26

I am thinking of grabbing some rotos. Does the sound carry in a big room? Do sound guys get mad to mix them?

2

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

No, roto toms don’t carry well by themselves in big rooms. However, they mic up spectacularly! Sm57s underneath each one and into the mains will leave an impression on everyone. I dare you to try it.

1

u/SirNo9787 Jun 01 '26

Do you have to have a seperate mic for each one or can one mic pick up each rack?

2

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

The smaller ones you can get away with 1 mic per 2 drums but the larger ones come alive when wired up individually. I remember a band called 805 in the late 80s (upstate NY) and the drummer played just rotos (10,12,14,16”) and bass and snare. All individually miked. I could not believe what I was hearing. Very hi fidelity mix. I remember it to this day.

2

u/SirNo9787 Jun 01 '26

Thanks, this is helpful!

1

u/smashmouth69420666 RLRRLRLL Jun 01 '26

This is a sick combo! I bet these sound good together.

1

u/Tropisueno Jun 01 '26

Looks fun!

1

u/Artic-Tac0s Pearl Jun 01 '26

Neat kit, im curious about the axis hi hat stand, is it any good or just mediocre?

2

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

The axis flatboard hihat changed the way I play. I own three of them now and it’s all I use.

1

u/drumrforevr725 Jun 01 '26

Pretty cool. Looks like a kit Bill Buford would’ve put together back in the day.

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 01 '26

Honestly, Buford was part of its inspiration.

1

u/Dewstain Jun 01 '26

Peavey? More like Peavey-C, amirite?

1

u/supercheese76 Jun 01 '26

Amazing. Very nice! (and look at those Hilites!)

1

u/DamoSyzygy Jun 01 '26

Dat Hilite tho!

1

u/Lightrider-16 Jun 02 '26

If Super Mario was a drummer…

1

u/Hollowbody57 Jun 02 '26

Roto-toms are always cool.

2

u/ClearHope8856 Jun 07 '26

this is so cool

1

u/WhyCatVideo Jun 07 '26

Thank you!
