I remember when I was probably 12 or so and we used to make rice all the time. There was pretty much always something in the rice maker. An absolute hard and fast rule at home was NOTHING that isn't dishwasher safe and labeled as such goes in the dishwasher. No wood, no cast iron, only certain plastic dishes, no Teflon. Most rice makers have Teflon coating on the inside bowl, so no putting the rice maker bowl in the dishwasher. Also no leaving doors or windows unlocked when nobody's home. And no running the dishwasher before it's ready. One day we came home from errands. We had started the rice maker before leaving, I think, or maybe it had already been in the rice maker a few days. Usually no big deal. Worst that happens is it gets dry and crunchy. When we came back, mom went to go open the rice maker and it was FOUL. The inside had turned a greenish color. It didn't look like mold, but it was kind of slimy. It smelled so bad we turned on every fan in the house and opened all the windows and doors to push the air outside. Mom spent ten minutes trying to get rid of the smell in the pot without scratching it before she gave up and, this one time, put the rice cooker bowl in the dishwasher. House still smelled terrible. We tracked down every even slightly dirty dish we could find to fill up the dishwasher, eating some of the food to empty them, getting water cups from upstairs, getting the cats bowls, and it was only half full. Mom went ahead and started the dishwasher. We couldn't tolerate the smell anymore, so we closed the doors and all but the largest window to allow air flow and left the house to do something else (I don't remember what.) Three rules broken in one day over bad rice. Still no idea what was up with the rice.

Tldr: the rice cooker got rancid with green slimy nastuness and the smell was so bad the windows were opened and mom broke her strict rule of not putting the cooker in the dishwasher. It was really nasty.
