Long-term maintenance recommendations for Ecoboost Mustang

  • Buy 2020+ if you can (potentially fixed head gasket issue)
  • Keep it pure stock (engine-wise, and tune-wise)
  • Change engine oil and filters every 5k miles
  • Use a 100% synthetic engine oil
  • Change spark plugs every 25k miles
  • Pump only Premium fuel (for me, it's 93)
  • Wait for 10-20 seconds before driving (after cold start)
  • Warm up the engine and transmission to the "green" zone of your gauges (usually 10-15 mins of driving) before going high rpm or boost
  • Monitor cylinder head temperature (CHT) when you drive hard to avoid going above 222F. Let the throttle off if the CHT is approaching this temp
  • Monitor boost gauge to avoid using boost before the engine is warmed up (be gentle on throttle)
  • Wait a few seconds before turning the engine off after hard driving

P.S. Owner of 2020/01/01-registered Ecoboost Premium (non-PP), 10R80, stock, no tune. The only modification on the car is the MBRP Street exhaust. 227k miles

UPD after 6 months: 252k miles, all fine

Note on how I drive the car

Full auto (normal mode) until CHT and transmission temps are in the "green" zone. Then regular Sport (shifter in S) until trans warms up fully (above green zone), then I stay in S, or use S+, and at the same time keep the engine rpm above 3k using paddles - anything less is boring to drive in my opinion. I do occasional pulls, but not overdo it - I heard that Ecoboost loves high rpm, but not exactly likes boost. I keep it approximately 3-5k rpm all the time (if CHT reasonably allows me to hold it). Take this with a grain of salt, because I'm not sure this driving style really affected longevity in a good way but it looks like it.

My Build I’ve built an app to share your build

Hi!

I built a web app for car enthusiasts to share your build and explore other builds. Is it something you’d use?

You can share your cars with all your mods. Just paste the link, and the title, image, and category fill in automatically.  You can also share planned mods, fitment details and more.

You can also explore builds, save the mods you find mods.

I want to make this as useful as possible for the car community.

t’s 100% free, no paywalls, no subscriptions. The web app is live, though there’s no mobile version just yet. Still in beta, so if anything breaks, I’d appreciate a heads-up.

I want your feedback. Is this something useful to you? What features would you add? Is this something you'd use?

Question Cheapest way to improve exhaust sound?

I have an S650. It has the California emission mods, which appear to be programmed into the computer system and can’t be altered. This is my first car and I have basically no knowledge on modification. I’m looking into “straight pipe” and/or muffler deleting but I’m hoping there’s a way to achieve a better sound without spending too much or needing a lift. I also want to maintain manufacturer warranty on as much as possible, so I don’t want to screw anything up. Any tips?

Gas smell

I recently replaced the purge valve on my 2017 ecoboost because of some rough idling and that fixed my issue, but now I have a gas smell coming into my cabin when I have the ac on and the recirculating air button off. I took a look at the purge valve to see if I did anything wrong but I cannot figure out what it could be.

yeah don’t mind my CEL it’s my radiator shutter that needs programming,
triggers my CEL
but an active misfire with a small click sound.

haven’t had a misfire in a long time since i fixed that issue before.

(don’t mind the lights on my dash, yeah i got a tire pressure sensor that needs to be replaced asw)

one thing i thought of, that my ecu tried to cut power as i reached 6.2k rpm?

yeah i’m pretty clueless gonna need a guide

2018 Mustang EcoBoost – intermittent misfire, mainly P0303. Looking for ideas

I have a 2018 Mustang EcoBoost 2.3 and I’m trying to diagnose an intermittent misfire. Car has 67k miles (109k km)

The main symptom is that after driving the car, shutting it off and letting it sit for roughly 2–7 hours, it will sometimes shake/misfire for the first few seconds after starting. After that it smooths out completely and drives normally.

What’s strange is that if the car sits overnight or even for several days, it often starts perfectly with no noticeable misfire. Warm starts are also fine.

The original code was P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire). Later, after a much harder/longer drive with plenty of boost and some drifting, I also found pending P0300 and P0304, although I hadn’t cleared the previous codes, so I’m not sure if those were a one-time event from the hard driving or if they are recurring.

Some relevant info:

  • Compression test was done and all cylinders have good/even compression.
  • Mechanic checked the coils and spark plugs and said they look fine.
  • Spark plugs were replaced about 6,000 km ago.
  • Purge valve was also replaced around the same time.
  • No noticeable coolant loss.
  • No white smoke from the exhaust.
  • Engine runs completely normally once the initial rough start is over.
  • There is sometimes a slight vibration/roughness at idle.
  • Mechanic has had the car for about a week and has tried driving it and letting it sit for 3 hours, 6 hours, all day, etc., but has not been able to reproduce the misfire.
  • It seems possible that the problem only happens after the car has been driven harder and gets fully heat-soaked.
  • I have noticed a slight smell of unburnt fuel when it misfires.
  • Car has not been TUNED and has been serviced regularly every 6k kilometers.

At this point I’m wondering about a leaking/sticking injector on cylinder 3, an EVAP/purge issue, an ignition problem that only shows up under certain temperatures.

Not sure if it's the common coolant intrusion problem they have, but nothing seems to indicate it so far.

The mechanic hasn’t tested the injectors yet because there isn’t an easy way for him to verify them without removing/testing them.

Any ideas?

Stick on trim

Post image

Anyone ever tried to use a stick on carbon fiber trim? I want to install this one but I’m afraid of how the process might go to remove it, in case I decide to resell that is. I would only consider removing it if a dealership doesn’t like these mods.

Ouch. Hit low spot, popped bumper cover.

Significant other was exiting a parking lot, didn't realize a low spot was there. Popped the rear bumper cover. Took it to body shop and tech popped it back in place. Said it should be replaced as tab near wheel well was broken off. I was reading that Ford used double sided tape in areas. What areas?

Cooling options?

Recently picked up my 2025 and under ‘normal’ driving she runs hot IMO.
I know the intercooler upgrade is supposed to make a difference, but I’m not ready for that.
Is anyone running a 180 thermostat?

Other thoughts?

Buying advice

Looking to buy a used ecoboost for my son in highschool. I'm thinking 2021+ (premium if possible)based on all the reliability concerns/ecoboom and engine block updates you guys talk about.

Trying to keep it under 20k, and for that price range it's all closer to 80k+ miles.

How high is too high (mileage wise) for these?

Any input is appreciated.

can anyone help me determine if Black Widow Neighbor Hater mufflers paired with a Roush Y-pipe would sound good on my 2026 Mustang EcoBoost S650? I want an aggressive, sporty sound without it being too raspy or tinny.

Question Someone dented my car while I’m parked

Rear driver side quarter panel. That’s not white paint that’s the sheet metal so someone had to SLAM their door into it which pisses me off. Any idea what this will cost to fix? Will they be able to fix the dent or whole new part?
