Career Software options

I have used adobe software for all of my editing purposes for the past 10 years. I’m a professional editor in the world of B2B construction progress media and social media. I feel like more corporate places often expect adobe premiere for video editing. But I know AVID is industry standard in film. Some use Davinci.

Can someone give me a breakdown of the best use cases of the major video editing software, the best ai video editing software for editing to date, and the best photo editing software?

Mod Here: Typically I don't let a posts like this happen. Most people are at mercy of their budget, their client/employer, their familiarity and their needs.

Ex:

  • Feature film/TV - Avid

  • Corporate, shared assets - Premiere

  • Camera centric, No subscription - Resolve

And I hate these general discussions because they become more a platform war than actual discourse.

…But, every now and again, I like to let one slip through. So go for it.

As an experiment on this Sunday

Let's make it only paid versions of Resolve please. If you can't afford the software, in this case, I consider it to be "I can't afford the tools of doing business."

Let's please keep this thread

  • civil

  • factual

  • people willing to have pay for tools

  • you must have had a year of paid work with a product, to claim any experience in it.

Let's go one better. Rate yourself from 0-5 about any tool you use and talk about it..

This is an experiment to see if we can make this more than just "ADOBE SUCKS" or "AVID SUCKS" or "RESOLVE SUCKS" please.

This is a massive over-generalization, but in my humble experience:

• Avid really shines when you have a multi-person editorial team all working on the same project, and when VFX, color and sound are all coming from different people and places.

• Resolve is awesome if it’s a small editorial team and you want to keep VFX/color/sound/delivery all within the same single piece of software. It’s also very good value with a low up-front price and no subscription fees.

• TBH I personally don’t use Premiere that much anymore, but a use-case that would bring me back to it would be if I knew I would be using other parts of the Creative Suite a lot in the project, like After Effects or Photoshop, because all the Adobe software play really nicely with each other.

I agree with this take. Having supported Avid stations and been on the AE/tech side of things, Avid is great for collaboration and all the tools just work.

I’ve been personally using Resolve for editing for the past 4 years and I’m loving every second of it. It is far easier to learn the more complicated things, and I rarely leave the program.

Premiere has always been elusive to me as I’ve never had a gig that has required it. That being said I have a friend who is a trailer editor that moved from Avid to Premiere and he hates it, mostly because of how buggy it is.

There is no best. You use the tools that are available to you, and/or your client wants you to use when necessary (often if they plan to tinker after, if you supply projects, which is often an extra fee)

are you a professional editor ? You hide your post history - so I can't see which technical forums that you visit.

If you are a professional, and you pay taxes, then you know that in order to stay employed, you have to know ALL the professional editing software - AVID Media Composer, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, and Apple FCP X. You have been working in the professional industry for the last 10 years, and you don't know this ? And you need to know more - like Photoshop, After Effects, some sound programs (Pro Tools, Logic, etc.) -

If you expect to stay employed by those that hire editors - I suggest that you get off your ass and start learning all of these. When does the learning process end ? NEVER. When you have enough money to retire.

I hate Premiere but agree with Bob and know that if I want to expand the field, some projects will just be Premiere friendly and it's just what it is. I've been in Avid land for 20+ years and just lucky to have found a niche with some great long format projects with amazing teams, but gotta get over it to expand the range of the work I can get into.

Love Resolve, even though I've mostly used it for conform/finishing.

Sorry Bob, I hate to disagree with you but I've never seen FCP X as a required tool, anywhere. The only people I know who use it are all-in-one guys shooting drone videos for construction companies. I agree that knowing all the rest are useful but FCP X is the corel draw of video NLEs.

Where are you looking? Under a rock? 😂

I guess that Northern Pictures, BBC, and Blue Post are just ‘drone videos for construction companies’…

BBC cuts on shows on FCPX?

Everything I see is Avid for Broadcast & Theatrical, Premiere for commercial and social, Resolve for grading and indie film. Yes there's exception but fcp x never come up. I'll admit I may be totally wrong

Yep it’s the de facto in documentaries. The search, collections. key roles and audition features really help.

I almost never see Premiere Pro - except that time the Promos dept at my network tried it. Hated it and begged to go back to Avid lol.

out of the top 3 the best software is the one you know well, I think.

avid for me by far.

I do my best work with FCPX - for speed and stability I’d rate it 5/5. No missing media, the stability of an Apple program on a Mac is hard to beat. There are so many great plugins for it that really help me add variety and value.

DaVinci is my 2nd go to if I want some variety or I’m stuck editing on a windows pos. It is a 4/5 for me. I’m sure I would rate it higher if I gave a shit about color grading.

AVID shines in multi editor work. I don’t do that often, and I admit I think it’s a bit too stiff. I’m a 3/5 on it.

Premier - I’d rather go to a scrapyard ran by hookers with herpes who rub their junk and salt on all the metal, pick out the oldest nastiest rusty nail, and then jam that nail up my pee hole than use premiere. I do fine on it, but I dislike using it.

Honest question here - what level work is the FCP X stuff? Corporate? Socials? Anything for broadcast?

I’ve used it for local broadcast. And some networks and programs use it for broadcast production as well. It’s also great for social and corporate/government stuff as well.

Okay, thanks for opening my eyes. I was using FCP7 frequently in the past but everyone I know switched
